    Narrative and Environmentally Based Character Expression System For Gameplay-Centric Video Games

    As technology progresses, so too does our ability to create visually stunning and incredibly immersive gaming experiences. With the power some consoles possess today, cinematic games have pushed the envelope of technology to deliver heavily animated, character driven stories not possible years ago. However, more “game-centric” games, in an effort to focus on gameplay and player projection, tend to neglect the possibilities of providing the same character driven experiences. In this paper, we present an animation system that would allow characters in traditionally gameplay-driven games to show the same amount of depth and growth as characters in other mediums. Our approach makes use of Unity’s animation and avatar masking systems as well as blend shapes to manage animations for a character based on where they are in their story, local environmental factors, and the characters own personality. In this way, we create a more dynamic character who creates player immersion not by being a blank slate, but by being an engaging and believable character to watch grow

    Augmentation of the Egg Parasitoid Anaphes iole (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) for Lygus hesperus (Heteroptera:Miridae) Management in Strawberries

    The impact of repeated releases of Anaphes iole (Girault) on the development of Lygus hesperus Knight populations and fruit damage in commercial strawberry fields was evaluated. Following the release of 37,000 parasitoids per hectare, 50% of L. hesperus eggs were parasitized. Parasitism levels declined rapidly; after 96 h, parasitism levels had declined to an average of only 3.5% in these plots. A release rate of 12,300 parasitoids per hectare produced parasitism levels of 6.3 and 7.0% 48 and 96 h after release, respectively. The high release rate of the parasitoids resulted in a 43% reduction in the number of L. hesperus nymphs and a 22% reduction in the amount of fruit damage. The low release rate responded in a comparable fashion, with nymph and damage levels 19 and 14% lower than control plots, respectively. The effect of the parasitoid releases on L. hesperus populations increased through time. On average, there was a proportionally greater reduction in nymph densities in the higher release rate plots during the latter half of the season. In all the plots, there was a significant relationship between the number of L. hesperus nymphs found in the plot and the amount of fruit damage.     Precision Pointing for the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope(WFIRST)

    The Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) mission, scheduled for a mid-2020's launch, is currently in its definition phase. The mission is designed to investigate essential questions in the areas of dark energy, exoplanets, and infrared astrophysics. WFIRST will use a 2.4-meter primary telescope (same size as the Hubble Space Telescope's primary mirror) and two instruments: the Wide Field Instrument (WFI) and the Coronagraph Instrument (CGI). In order to address the critical science requirements, the WFIRST mission will conduct large-scale surveys of the infrared sky, requiring both agility and precision pointing (11.6 milli-arcsec stability, 14 milli-arcsec jitter). This paper describes some of the challenges this mission profile presents to the Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) subsystem, and some of the design elements chosen to accommodate those challenges. The high-galactic-latitude survey is characterized by 3-minute observations separated by slews ranging from 0.025 deg to 0.8 deg. The need for observation efficiency drives the slew and settle process to be as rapid as possible. A description of the shaped slew profile chosen to minimize excitation of structural oscillation, and the handoff from star tracker-gyro control to fine guidance sensor control is detailed. Also presented is the fine guidance sensor (FGS), which is integral with the primary instrument (WFI). The FGS is capable of tracking up to 18 guide stars, enabling robust FGS acquisition and precision pointing. To avoid excitation of observatory structural jitter, reaction wheel speeds are operationally maintained within set limits. In addition, the wheel balance law is designed to maintain 1-Hz separation between the wheel speeds to avoid reinforcing jitter excitation at any particular frequency. The wheel balance law and operational implications are described. Finally, the candidate GNC hardware suite needed to meet the requirements of the mission is presented

    Powdery mildew responsive genes of resistant grapevine cultivar 'Regent'

    The ascomycete Erysiphe necator causes powdery mildew disease of grapevine, a disastrous infection which is commonly defeated with multiple fungicide applications in viticulture. Breeding for natural resistance of quality grapes (Vitis vinifera) is thus a major aim of current efforts. The cultivar 'Regent' is resistant to powdery mildew due to an introgression from an American Vitis sp. resistance donor. To identify key regulatory elements in defense responses of 'Regent' we performed transcript analyses after challenging with E. necator inoculation in comparison with a susceptible grapevine. A set of genes selected from preliminary microarray hybridization results were investigated by RT-qPCR. The data indicate an important role of transcription factors MYB15, WRKY75, WRKY33, WRKY7, ethylene responsive transcription factors ERF2 and ERF5 as well as a CZF1/ZFAR transcripton factor in regulating the early defense when the fungus starts the interaction with its host by the formation of haustoria

    Isolation of nine microsatellite loci in Dolichogenidea homoeosomae (Hymenoptera) a parasitoid of the sunflower moth Homoeosoma electellum (Lepidoptera)

    Nine microsatellite loci were isolated from the insect Dolichogenidea homoeosomae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), an important parasitoid of the sunflower moth Homosoeosoma electellum (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), and assayed for polymorphism. All nine loci were polymorphic within the five populations tested, with two to 14 alleles per locus. Expected and observed heterozygosities ranged from 0.39 to 0.90 and 0.25 to 0.72 respectively. These are the first microsatellite primers developed for D. homeosomae and will be useful for studies of population dynamics and connectivity. © 2006 Blackwell Publishing Ltd

    Aminodecarboxylation of unactivated alkyl carboxylic acids has been accomplished utilizing an organic photocatalyst. This operationally simple reaction utilizes readily available carboxylic acids to chemoselectively generate reactive alkyl intermediates that are not accessible via conventional two-electron pathways.
