Large-scale surface reconstruction energetics of Pt(100) and Au(100) by all-electron DFT
The low-index surfaces of Au and Pt all tend to reconstruct, a fact that is
of key importance in many nanostructure, catalytic, and electrochemical
applications. Remarkably, some significant questions regarding their structural
energies remain even today, in particular for the large-scale quasihexagonal
reconstructed (100) surfaces: Rather dissimilar reconstruction energies for Au
and Pt in available experiments, and experiment and theory do not match for Pt.
We here show by all-electron density-functional theory that only large enough
"(5 x N)" approximant supercells capture the qualitative reconstruction energy
trend between Au(100) and Pt(100), in contrast to what is often done in the
theoretical literature. Their magnitudes are then in fact similar, and closer
to the measured value for Pt(100); our calculations achieve excellent agreement
with known geometric characteristics and provide direct evidence for the
electronic reconstruction driving force.Comment: updated version - also includes EPAPS information as auxiliary file;

Release of adsorbed ferulic acid in simulated gastrointestinal conditions
Ferulic acid (FA) is a natural antioxidant with limited absorption when conjugated with biomolecules but whose free form
is readily absorbed in the stomach and, to a lesser extent, in the ileum. The latter sufers from infammation and oxidative
stress, so a novel strategy for the delivery of FA in this compartment of the gastrointestinal tract was developed. Using the
neutral un-functionalized resin Lewatit® VP OC 1064 MD PH, under optimized conditions, a loading of 144 mg FA/g of
dry resin was obtained. By means of an in vitro simulated digestion, an average release of 32 mg FA/g of dry loaded resin
(recovery of 22%) was observed in intestinal conditions. The incorporation/release of FA onto/from the resin was confrmed
by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy and by HPLC-DAD. This work showed that the free form of FA can efectively be delivered in
the small intestine, after immobilization in solid matrices.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The conservation of energy-momentum and the mass for the graviton
In this work we give special attention to the bimetric theory of gravitation
with massive gravitons proposed by Visser in 1998. In his theory, a prior
background metric is necessary to take in account the massive term. Although in
the great part of the astrophysical studies the Minkowski metric is the best
choice to the background metric, it is not possible to consider this metric in
cosmology. In order to keep the Minkowski metric as background in this case, we
suggest an interpretation of the energy-momentum conservation in Visser's
theory, which is in accordance with the equivalence principle and recovers
naturally the special relativity in the absence of gravitational sources.
Although we do not present a general proof of our hypothesis we show its
validity in the simple case of a plane and dust-dominated universe, in which
the `massive term' appears like an extra contribution for the energy density.Comment: 9 pages, accepted for publishing in GR
Quality evaluation of minoxidil topical solutions obtained from magistral pharmacies
The objective of this study was to evaluate quality parameters of magistral topical solutions containing minoxidil (A, B and C), comparing the results with the ones obtained for the industrial formulation. Organoleptic tests, evaluation of the pH and density, centrifuge test, drug content determination, comparison of indicated dosages and in vitro follicular penetration of minoxidil were performed. Regarding the organoleptic properties, differences in color and viscosity were observed between the magistral (composed of minoxidil sulfate) and the industrial formulations (composed of minoxidil base). For pH values, the magistral solutions presented considerably more acidic pH, compared to the industrial sample. For the density test, the samples with the highest ethanol percentages (B and C) presented lower density. In the centrifuge test, none of the samples showed changes. Considering the drug content test, only the industrial sample and the magistral sample C showed drug percentage within the expected (90-110%), indicating lack of correction factor determination by the magistral pharmacies. Furthermore, it was observed that the dosage indicated by the magistral pharmacies do not correspond to the dose indicated by the industry, being significantly lower. All topical solutions tested presented hair follicle penetration of minoxildil, without statistical difference. The results indicate that there is a failure in the magistral pharmacies regarding the production and the indication of dosage of minoxidil topical solutions
Perfect category-graded algebras
In a perfect category every object has a minimal projective resolution. We
give a criterion for the category of modules over a categorygraded algebra to
be perfect.Comment: A sufficient condition is replaced by a criterion. Several references

Características morfogênicas do capim-marandu sob lotação contínua.

Potentially toxic elements’ contamination of soils affected by mining activities in the Portuguese Sector of the Iberian Pyrite
Both sectors of the Iberian Pyrite Belt, Portuguese and Spanish, have been exploited since ancient times, but more intensively during and after the second half of the 19th century. Large volumes of polymetallic sulfide ore were extracted in open pits or in underground works, processed without environmental concerns, and the generated waste rocks and tailings were simply deposited in the area. Many of these mining sites were abandoned for years under the action of erosive agents, leading to the spread of trace elements and the contamination of soils, waters and sediments.
Some of these mine sites have been submitted to rehabilitation actions, mostly using constructive
techniques to dig and contain the contaminated tailings and other waste materials, but the remaining
soil still needs to be treated with the best available techniques to recover its ecosystem functions.
Besides the degraded physical structure and poor nutritional status of these soils, they have common
characteristics, as a consequence of the pyrite oxidation and acid drainage produced, such as a high
concentration of trace elements and low pH, which must be considered in the remediation plans.
This manuscript aims to review the results from studies which have already covered these topics
in the Iberian Pyrite Belt, especially in its Portuguese sector, considering: (i) soils’ physicochemical
characteristics; (ii) potentially toxic trace elements’ concentration; and (iii) sustainable remediation
technologies to cope with this type of soil contamination. Phytostabilization, after the amelioration of
the soil’s properties with organic and inorganic amendments, was investigated at the lab and field
scale by several authors, and their results were also considered
