Scaling Tests of the Cross Section for Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering

    Get PDF
We present the first measurements of the e⃗p→epγ cross section in the deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) regime and the valence quark region. The Q2 dependence (from 1.5 to 2.3  GeV2) of the helicity-dependent cross section indicates the twist-2 dominance of DVCS, proving that generalized parton distributions (GPDs) are accessible to experiment at moderate Q2. The helicity-independent cross section is also measured at Q2=2.3  GeV2. We present the first model-independent measurement of linear combinations of GPDs and GPD integrals up to the twist-3 approximation

Core excitation effects in the breakup of halo nuclei

    Get PDF
The role of core excitation in the structure and dynamics of two-body halo nuclei is investigated. We present calculations for the resonant breakup of 11Be on protons at an incident energy of 63.7 MeV/nucleon, where core excitation effects were shown to be important. To describe the reaction, we use a recently developed extension of the DWBA formalism which incorporates these core excitation effects within the no-recoil approximation. The validity of the no-recoil approximation is also examined by comparing with DWBA calculations which take into account core recoil. In addition, calculations with two different continuum representations are presented and compared.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación FIS2011-28738-c02-01, FPA2009- 07653, FPA2009-08848, CSD2007-00042Junta de Andalucía FQM160, P07-FQM-0289

Proteomic Identification of Dengue Virus Binding Proteins in Aedes aegypti Mosquitoes and Aedes albopictus Cells

    Get PDF
The main vector of dengue in America is the mosquito Aedes aegypti, which is infected by dengue virus (DENV) through receptors of midgut epithelial cells. The envelope protein (E) of dengue virus binds to receptors present on the host cells through its domain III that has been primarily recognized to bind cell receptors. In order to identify potential receptors, proteins from mosquito midgut tissue and C6/36 cells were purified by affinity using columns with the recombinant E protein domain III (rE-DIII) or DENV particles bound covalently to Sepharose 4B to compare and evaluate their performance to bind proteins including putative receptors from female mosquitoes of Ae. aegypti. To determine their identity mass spectrometric analysis of purified proteins separated by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was performed. Our results indicate that both viral particles and rE-DIII bound proteins with the same apparent molecular weights of 57 and 67 kDa. In addition, viral particles bound high molecular weight proteins. Purified proteins identified were enolase, beta-adrenergic receptor kinase (beta-ARK), translation elongation factor EF-1 alpha/Tu, and cadherin

Analysis of the elastic scattering measured with a 23.7 MeV 7Be beam on a 9Be target.

    Get PDF
We present new data for the reaction 7Be+9Be measured at Elab =23.7 MeV. The elastic scattering angular distribution has been analyzed using the phenomenological optical model and the coupled-channels method. In the latter approach, we assumed a two-cluster model of the 7Be nucleus, and we included explicitly the ground state and first excited state of this nucleus. The contribution of the inelastic excitation of the 7Be nucleus to the quasielastic cross sections has been investigated.

ABSTRACT Population dynamics of Ascaris lumbricoides after antiparasitic chemotherapy were estimated from longitudinal intensity and prevalence data, from school children in three villages in Floridablanca (Santander, Colombia). The high basic reproduction rate (Ro = 10.3) calculated in this study indicates that the individual chemotherapy programs recommended by the Ministry of Social Protection are unable to cut the transmission. Mass chemotherapies are recommended. Key words: ascaris lumbricoides, worm burden, epidemiolog

Production of extracts with anaesthetic activity from the culture of Heterosigma akashiwo in pilot-scale photobioreactors

The shear-sensitive microalga Heterosigma akashiwo is known to produce brevetoxin-like compounds that are active in voltage-dependent sodium channels. In this work, we present a study on the production of anaesthetic extracts from H. akashiwo biomass obtained in low-shear bioreactors at different growth phases. The photobioreactors (PBRs) used had specific configurations and were operated in such a way as to avoid cellular damage by hydrodynamic stress. Cultures were developed in small static-control flasks and PBRs with volumes ranging from 1.5 L to 200 L. The bioactivity of the produced extracts was assessed in vitro (Neuro-2a cell-based assay) and in vivo (Zebra fish model). Bioactivity depended slightly on the growth phase and culture system, with greater toxicity with the Neuro-2a model when stationary-phase extracts were used. Interestingly, extracts were not cytotoxic against other human cell lines. Steady production of anaesthetic bioactives was observed. In vivo anaesthetic efficacy, assessed with the Zebra fish model, was similar to that of commercial products, and without any observed mortality at 24-h post exposure
