Methodology to assess the maximum irrigation rates at regional scale using geostatistics and GIS
Ponencia presentada en la Conference of Agricultural Engineering celebrada en Valencia del 8 añ 12 de julio de 2012Soil water holding capacity is an important parameter for irrigation scheduling and water balance modelling in fields. In the framework of precision irrigation the knowledge of the spatial distribution of this parameter is useful to advice the maximum irrigation rate specifically for each field in an irrigation district, region, etc. The soil water holding capacity (SWHC) can be assessed as the soil water content between the field capacity (FC) and the permanent wilting point (PWP). In this work, we present a methodology to assess the spatial distribution of the maximum irrigation rate depending on the soil water holding capacity. This methodology combines geostatistic techniques with geographical information system-GIS tool. A pilot zone of 12 400 ha located in the Palancia river lowland (between Valencia and Castellón province, Spain) in which the main irrigated crops are citrus (53.8 %), and vegetables (13.3 %), was selected to develop this methodology. For spatial modelling of SWHC, experimental semivariograms were assessed for the FC and PWP at three soil depth intervals (0-10, 10-30, 30-60 cm). Spherical models fitted well to the experimental semivariograms, with a very high spatial dependency index (ID = 0.05-0.41) which support reliable predictions on basis the fitted models. The cokriging spatial interpolation method, considering the percentage of sand as secondary variable, was the best option to minimize the root mean square error in the cross-validation test.Peer Reviewe
Drag reduction on a blunt body by self-adaption of rear flexibly hinged flaps
We study the aerodynamics of a blunt-based body with rear flexibly-hinged rigid flaps,
subject to a turbulent flow of Reynolds number Re = 12000, under aligned and cross
flow conditions with yaw angle β = 0◦ and β = 4◦. To that aim, different values of
the equivalent torsional stiffness are considered, to cover the range of reduced velocity
U∗ = (0, 3.48] in water tank experiments. The effect of the angular deflection of
plates on the drag and near wake flow is analyzed, experimentally and numerically.
The results show that, in the range of U∗ herein considered, the plates undergo an
inwards quasi-static, self-adaptive deflection, which is symmetric for yaw angles β = 0◦
and asymmetric for β = 4◦. In particular, the plates feature small mean deformation
angles for values of U∗ < 1, whereas a sharp and monotonic increase of such deflection
occurs for U∗ > 1, i.e. for lower values of the hinge’s stiffness, with an asymptotic
trend towards the larger values of U∗. A critical value of reduced velocity of U∗ ≃ 0.96
is obtained as the instability threshold above which plates depart from their initial
equilibrium position. The progressive streamlining of the trailing edge translates into
significant reductions of the associated mean drag coefficients. Thus, reductions close
to 19% with respect to reference static plates configurations are obtained for the most
flexible case of U∗ = 3.48 for both β = 0◦ and β = 4◦. A close inspection of the
near wake reveals that the inwards progressive mean displacement of the plates yields
a reduction in the recirculation bubble size. A symmetric evolution of the recirculating
bubble is observed for β = 0◦, whereas the bubble becomes asymmetric for β = 4◦,
with a larger leeward clockwise vortex. In both cases, the drag coefficient is shown
to vary linearly with the global aspect ratio of the recirculating bubble. The analysis
of the numerical results shows that the reduced extension of the recirculating bubble
significantly alters the formation length and intensity of the eddies size and associated
pressure. It is observed that despite the local pressure decrease in the vortices shed from
the trailing edges, the plates self adaption reduces their size and prevents the eddies
from entering the cavity, thus, creating a dead flow region with a consequent pressure

The diagnosis of hereditary angioedema: family caregivers’ experiences
The aim of this study was to understand the experiences of family caregivers in the process of diagnosing hereditary angioedema. An interpretive and qualitative research methodology based on Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics was carried out. Data collection took place between May 2015 and August 2016 and included a focus group and in-depth interviews with 16 family caregivers. Two themes define the experiences of family caregivers: “Family life focuses on identifying the problem” and “Discovering and coping with a complex diagnosis.” The process of diagnosis generates fear, anxiety, uncertainty, and incomprehension. Family caregivers are the main support for patients diagnosed with hereditary angioedema. As they share in the patients’ suffering, they need a diagnosis to be established to be able to cope with the disease and offer support. Family health nurses can contribute to improving the coping process in this phase of the disease
Conceptual design of the ITER fast-ion loss detector
et al.A conceptual design of a reciprocating fast-ion loss detector for ITER has been developed and is presented here. Fast-ion orbit simulations in a 3D magnetic equilibrium and up-to-date first wall have been carried out to revise the measurement requirements for the lost alpha monitor in ITER. In agreement with recent observations, the simulations presented here suggest that a pitch-angle resolution of ∼5° might be necessary to identify the loss mechanisms. Synthetic measurements including realistic lost alpha-particle as well as neutron and gamma fluxes predict scintillator signal-to-noise levels measurable with standard light acquisition systems with the detector aperture at ∼11 cm outside of the diagnostic first wall. At measurement position, heat load on detector head is comparable to that in present devices.This research was supported in part by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (Grant Nos. BOCADEVA 0714 Gulf of Cadiz Anchovy Egg Survey and 2014 SSB preliminary estimates
This working document provides a brief description of the survey, laboratory analysis and estimation procedures used to obtain the Gulf of Cadiz anchovy SSB by DEPM for 2014 in the South-Atlantic Iberian Stock. Results are preliminary, because the estimation of the spawning fraction is not available yet
Elastic properties of B-C-N films grown by N2-reactive sputtering from boron carbide targets

The films present phase segregation and are mechanically softer than boron carbide films (a factor of more than 2 in Young's modulus). Análisis del espesor coroideo en pacientes con queratocono
Objective. To determine and compare choroidal thickness (CT) in keratoconus (KC) patients using Enhanced Depth Imaging (EDI) OCT.
Methods. A comparative cross-sectional study including 26 patients with KC and 26 healthy controls assessed with Pentacam and EDI-OCT. CT was measured manually with the Caliper function at thirteen locations at 500 µm regular intervals.
Results. The average CT in T6 was 253.96 ± 88.95 μm in the KC group, and of 309.39 ± 94.11 μm in the control group (p <0.041). No significant differences in mean CT were observed in the rest of the points, including the subfoveal CT (M), 351.48 ± 106.3 vs 365.35 ± 114.6 μm, (p = 0.66). No correlation was observed between the mean subfoveal CT (M), the mean CT in the KC group, and the values of K1 (p = 0.977 and p = 0.498 respectively), K2 (p = 0.450 and p = 0.656), corneal asphericity (Q ) (p = 0.986 and p = 0.902), minimal pachymetry (Pachy) (p = 0.408 and p = 0.688), keratoconus index (KI) (p = 0.601 and p = 0.217), vertical asymmetry index (VAT) (p = 0.296 and p = 0.523), staging of KC (TKC) (p = 0.549 and p = 0.08) and corneal apex morphology.
Conclusion. Significant lower CT was found in the KC group in T6 (3000 μm temporal to the fovea). No significant difference of CT values in KC patients and healthy subjects was found in the other twelve measurement locations.We found no association between the refractive and keratometric indexes obtained by corneal topography and subfoveal CT.Objetivo. Determinar y comparar el grosor de la coroides (CT) en pacientes con queratocono (KC) usando OCT con Enhanced Depth Imaging (EDI).
Métodos. Estudio comparativo transversal que incluye 26 pacientes con KC y 26 controles sanos evaluados con Pentacam y EDI-OCT. El KC fue medido manualmente con la función Caliper en trece puntos a intervalos regulares de 500 µm.
Resultados. El promedio de CT en T6 fue de 253,96 ± 88,95 μm en el grupo KC, y de 309,39 ± 94,11 μm en el grupo de control (p <0,041). No se observaron diferencias significativas en la media de CT en el resto de los puntos, incluyendo el CT subfoveal (M), 351.48 ± 106.3 vs 365.35 ± 114.6 μm, (p = 0.66). No se observó ninguna correlación entre la media de CT (M) subfoveal, la media de CT en el grupo KC, y los valores de K1 (p = 0,977 y p = 0,498 respectivamente), K2 (p = 0,450 y p = 0,656), la asfericidad corneal (Q) (p = 0,986 y p = 0. 902), paquimetría mínima (Pachy) (p = 0,408 y p = 0,688), índice de queratocono (KI) (p = 0,601 y p = 0,217), índice de asimetría vertical (VIA) (p = 0,296 y p = 0,523), estadificación del KC (TKC) (p = 0,549 y p = 0,08) y morfología del ápice corneal.
Conclusión. Se observó un CT significativamente menor en el grupo KC en T6 (3000 μm temporal a la fóvea). No se encontraron diferencias significativas entre los valores del CT en los pacientes con KC y en los sujetos sanos en los 12 puntos de medida restantes. No se encontró ninguna asociación entre los índices refractivos y queratométricos obtenidos por la topografía corneal y el CT subfoveal
Regeneration of ortho-chlorophenol-exhausted activated carbons with liquid water at high pressure and temperature
[EN]A study was undertaken of the regeneration of three activated carbons exhausted with ortho-chlorophenol. The regeneration process was carried out using liquid water at 623 K and 150 atm in the absence of oxygen. The efficiency of this procedure was analyzed by determining the rate and amount of ortho-chlorophenol adsorbed in successive adsorption–regeneration cycles. The present procedure showed a much greater efficiency than that reported for chemical and/or thermal regeneration. Effects of this regeneration on the adsorption kinetics, adsorption capacity and textural characteristics of the carbon were investigated. The increase in adsorption capacity of the regenerated carbon compared with that of the original carbon seems mainly due to the opening of porosity during the regeneration treatment
Differences in assigning probabilities to coastal inundation hazard estimators: event versus response approaches

In this work we analyse the uncertainty introduced in the assessment associated to the method to assign the probability of occurrence to coastal flood hazards. To this end we have compared the use of two general methods, the response and the event approaches. Different procedures are used to characterise coastal inundation hazards depending on the analysis scale and data availability. Thus, a range of possibilities has been analysed, from simple estimators such as run-up to modelled flood-prone areas. The analysis has been performed for all wave and water level conditions around the Spanish coast. The results show that the differences between the methods are location-dependent, and thus, determined by the exposure to wave and water level conditions. When using the event approach, the run-up or total water level (with good correlation between waves and surge) distributions reasonably approximate those of the response approach with low associated uncertainty. When the assessment aims to output overtopping discharges or inundation maps, observed differences suggest that the event approach would produce misleading conclusions in inundation-related coastal management and decision-making.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
