The impact of mass-loss on the evolution and pre-supernova properties of red supergiants
The post main-sequence evolution of massive stars is very sensitive to many
parameters of the stellar models. Key parameters are the mixing processes, the
metallicity, the mass-loss rate and the effect of a close companion. We study
how the red supergiant lifetimes, the tracks in the Hertzsprung-Russel diagram
(HRD), the positions in this diagram of the pre-supernova progenitor as well as
the structure of the stars at that time change for various mass-loss rates
during the red supergiant phase (RSG), and for two different initial rotation
velocities. The surface abundances of RSGs are much more sensitive to rotation
than to the mass-loss rates during that phase. A change of the RSG mass-loss
rate has a strong impact on the RSG lifetimes and therefore on the luminosity
function of RSGs. At solar metallicity, the enhanced mass-loss rate models do
produce significant changes on the populations of blue, yellow and red
supergiants. When extended blue loops or blue ward excursions are produced by
enhanced mass-loss, the models predict that a majority of blue (yellow)
supergiants are post RSG objects. These post RSG stars are predicted to show
much smaller surface rotational velocities than similar blue supergiants on
their first crossing of the HR gap. The position in the HRD of the end point of
the evolution depends on the mass of the hydrogen envelope. More precisely,
whenever, at the pre-supernova stage, the H-rich envelope contains more than
about 5\% of the initial mass, the star is a red supergiant, and whenever the
H-rich envelope contains less than 1\% of the total mass the star is a blue
supergiant. For intermediate situations, intermediate colors/effective
temperatures are obtained. Yellow progenitors for core collapse supernovae can
be explained by the enhanced mass-loss rate models, while the red progenitors

Red Supergiants in the Andromeda Galaxy (M31)
Red supergiants are a short-lived stage in the evolution of moderately
massive stars (10-25Mo), and as such their location in the H-R diagram provides
an exacting test of stellar evolutionary models. Since massive star evolution
is strongly affected by the amount of mass-loss a star suffers, and since the
mass-loss rates depend upon metallicity, it is highly desirable to study the
physical properties of these stars in galaxies of various metallicities. Here
we identify a sample of red supergiants in M31 (the most metal-rich of the
Local Group galaxies) and derive their physical properties by fitting MARCS
atmosphere models to moderate resolution optical spectroscopy, and from V-K

MIcrogreens: Functional food with antiproliferative cancer properties influenced by light
The anti-proliferative/pro-oxidant efficacy of green pea, soybean, radish, Red Rambo radish, and rocket microgreens, cultivated under either fluorescent lighting (predominant spectral peaks in green and orange) or combination light-emitting diode (LED, predominant spectral peak in blue) was investigated using Ewing sarcoma lines, RD-ES and A673, respectively. All aqueous microgreen extracts significantly reduced cell proliferation (cancer prevention effect) to varying extents in two-dimensional sarcoma cell cultures. The effect of the polyphenol fraction in the aqueous food matrix was unrelated to total polyphenol content, which differed between species and light treatment. Only Pisum sativum (LED-grown) extracts exercised anti-proliferative and pro-apoptotic effects in both three-dimensional RD-ES and A673 spheroids (early tumor progression prevention), without cytotoxic effects on healthy L929 fibroblasts. A similar anti-tumor effect of Red Rambo radish (LED and fluorescent-grown) was evident only in the RD-ES spheroids. Aside from the promising anti-tumor potential of the polyphenol fraction of green pea microgreens, the latter also displayed favorable growth quality parameters, along with radish, under both light treatments over the 10 day cultivation period
Naturally occurring Ehrlichia chaffeensis infection in coyotes from Oklahoma.
A nested polymerase chain reaction assay was used to determine the presence of Ehrlichia chaffeensis, E. canis, and E. ewingii DNA in blood samples of free-ranging coyotes from central and northcentral Oklahoma. Of the 21 coyotes examined, 15 (71%) were positive for E. chaffeensis DNA; none was positive for E. canis or E. ewingii. Results suggest that E. chaffeensis infections are common in free-ranging coyotes in Oklahoma and that these wild canids could play a role in the epidemiology of human monocytotropic ehrlichiosis
Late-Type Red Supergiants: Too Cool for the Magellanic Clouds?
We have identified seven red supergiants (RSGs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud
(LMC) and four RSGs in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), all of which have
spectral types that are considerably later than the average type observed in
their parent galaxy. Using moderate-resolution optical spectrophotometry and
the MARCS stellar atmosphere models, we determine their physical properties and
place them on the H-R diagram for comparison with the predictions of current
stellar evolutionary tracks. The radial velocities of these stars suggest that
they are likely all members of the Clouds rather than foreground dwarfs or halo
giants. Their locations in the H-R diagram also show us that those stars are
cooler than the current evolutionary tracks allow, appearing to the right of
the Hayashi limit, a region in which stars are no longer in hydrodynamic
equilibrium. These stars exhibit considerable variability in their V
magnitudes, and three of these stars also show changes in their effective
temperatures (and spectral types) on the time-scales of months. One of these
stars, [M2002] SMC 055188, was caught in an M4.5 I state, as late as that seen
in HV 11423 at its recent extreme: considerable later, and cooler, than any
other supergiant in the SMC. In addition, we find evidence of variable
extinction due to circumstellar dust and changes in the stars' luminosities,
also consistent with our recent findings for HV 11423 - when these stars are
hotter they are also dustier and more luminous. We suggest that these stars
have unusual properties because they are in an unstable (and short-lived)

Systemic and immune manifestations in myelodysplasia: a multicenter retrospective study
OBJECTIVE: The presence of systemic and/or immune manifestations in myelodysplasia has been currently reported. The influence of these manifestations on the natural outcome of myelodysplastic syndrome has to be considered. We present a multicenter retrospective study (2002-2009) of patients with myelodysplastic syndrome disclosing systemic and/or immune manifestations. METHODS: Forty-six patients with myelodysplasia presenting with systemic and/or immune manifestations were compared in terms of survival with 189 patients with myelodysplasia lacking these features. RESULTS: The clinical picture in these cases consisted of fever (13%), arthralgia or arthritis (13%), and cutaneous manifestations (67%). Four cases of systemic vasculitis have been reported in our series, and they have a worse prognosis. Immune anomalies were recorded in 29% of the cases, and the presence of cryoglobulins was also associated with a worse prognosis. CONCLUSION: A difference in survival between patients with myelodysplastic syndrome with systemic manifestations and patients lacking these manifestations has been observed in the presence of systemic vasculitis and/or cryoglobulins
The High-Metallicity Explosion Environment of the Relativistic Supernova 2009bb
We investigate the environment of the nearby (d ~ 40Mpc) broad-lined Type Ic
supernova SN 2009bb. This event was observed to produce a relativistic outflow
likely powered by a central accreting compact object. While such a phenomenon
was previously observed only in long-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs), no LGRB
was detected in association with SN 2009bb. Using an optical spectrum of the SN
2009bb explosion site, we determine a variety of ISM properties for the host
environment, including metallicity, young stellar population age, and star
formation rate. We compare the SN explosion site properties to observations of
LGRB and broad-lined SN Ic host environments on optical emission line ratio
diagnostic diagrams. Based on these analyses, we find that the SN 2009bb
explosion site has a very high metallicity of ~2x solar, in agreement with
other broad-lined SN Ic host environments and at odds with the low-redshift
LGRB host environments and recently proposed maximum metallicity limits for
relativistic explosions. We consider the implications of these findings and the
impact that SN 2009bb's unusual explosive properties and environment have on
our understanding of the key physical ingredient that enables some SNe to

Generating multimedia presentations: from plain text to screenplay
In many Natural Language Generation (NLG) applications, the output is limited to plain text – i.e., a string of words with punctuation and paragraph breaks, but no indications for layout, or pictures, or dialogue. In several projects, we have begun to explore NLG applications in which these extra media are brought into play. This paper gives an informal account of what we have learned. For coherence, we focus on the domain of patient information leaflets, and follow an example in which the same content is expressed first in plain text, then in formatted text, then in text with pictures, and finally in a dialogue script that can be performed by two animated agents. We show how the same meaning can be mapped to realisation patterns in different media, and how the expanded options for expressing meaning are related to the perceived style and tone of the presentation. Throughout, we stress that the extra media are not simple added to plain text, but integrated with it: thus the use of formatting, or pictures, or dialogue, may require radical rewording of the text itself
