Teaching Methods Utilizing a Field Theory Viewpoint in the Elementary Reading Program

    Get PDF
The trend in reading instruction during the past few years, has strongly focused on the whole child, his individuality, his feelings, beliefs, and goals as well as his cognitive abilities. All of these constitute the child\u27s life space and are the parts of the whole that teachers must deal with. Consistent with this learning theory, the teacher\u27s role has changed. Teaching now consists of the promotion and enrichment of the interactive learning process between the child and his environment. The teaching environment of the reading program is most important to the young reader\u27s success. The acceleration of the reading process depends on the ability of the teacher to create an environment that both challenges and facilitates this interaction

Memories from the W Boson Discovery

The fascinating story of a major discovery at CERN is outlined. The bold decision to convert its most powerful, and only recently inaugurated, proton accelerator to a proton-antiproton collider led to the discovery of the W and Z bosons -- mediators of the weak interaction -- in a record time, at the experiments UA1 and UA2. The decisive roles of Carlo Rubbia and Simon van der Meer, who received the 1984 Nobel Prize for physics, are underlined.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. The Kansas Governor's Commission on the Status of Women, 1968-1970

The feminist movement in the United States began with a refusal by women to allow their traditional secondary status to remain acceptable. Eleanor Roosevelt, First Lady of the United States, once admonished that "no one can make you feel inferior without your consent."1 In most cultures around the world, including the United States, women have consented to inferiority throughout much of their history. But no longer. The women's rights movement has led to "enormous and mundane, subtle and not-so-subtle, delightful, painful, immediate, far-reaching, paradoxical, inexorable and probably irreversible changes in women's lives, and men's."

Recognition of prior learning at the University of Malta : a researcher‑practitioner perspective

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is “the process of confirmation by an authorised body that an individual has acquired learning outcomes measured against a relevant standard” (CEDEFOP, 2019 pp.i). Through the RPL policy (University of Malta, 2016), the University of Malta (UoM) seeks to facilitate access to its courses for non‑traditional learners who have obtained relevant knowledge, skills, and competencies from various contexts. The policy, established in October 2016, has been implemented since then. Within this period of time, practices have been developed and an evaluation of the process will be useful to identify any shortcomings. In this paper I reflect on my practitioner’s experience as an RPL Coordinator within the University of Malta to analyse the strengths of the RPL process. From a researcher’s point of view, I present an evaluative perspective of how this can be developed furtherpeer-reviewe

Sustainable Development for Professional Sports Stadiums

    Get PDF
The modern era's fixation with the object and its inversion of space has resulted in the loss of the traditional realm of public space found in the city. Gone are the places for public action and gathering: the streets and squares or, historically, the agora, forum, and piazza. In terms of building typology, the object has replaced the void as the central feature of the modern city (Guskind 1984, 98). Professional National Football League (NFL) and Major League Baseball (MLB) stadiums house the largest crowds of almost any other American venue. The large investment dollars and high levels of public access through these spaces place importance on the way a stadium and its surrounding development is designed. Good urban design practice and successful economic development can create a robust stadium environment that attracts visitors and adds to both the utility and the economy of the city. Both location and design affect the marketability of a place, so this paper evaluates NFL and MLB stadiums’ locations and urban design to ultimately form a list of recommendations for stadium planners and local decision-makers (Petersen 2001). First, a background presents the importance of the subject, followed by a description of the scope of this study. Next, precedents are studied through the lens of location type and site characteristics. Section 3 delves into three cities providing case studies under both the NFL and MLB that vary in success. The analysis focuses heavily on Atlanta as both of the city’s teams are moving homes in 2017. Recommendations and further implications follow, providing both general ideas and Atlanta-specific suggestions.Drummond, Willia
