An assessment of the potential returns of energy certificates for the UK household sector

Purpose – This article seeks to investigate the interconnections between the expectations of the impact of energy certificates issued within the UK domestic building sector through the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) and the actual number and financial implications of the energy saving measures (ESMs) achieved. Design/methodology/approach – The methodology uses two previously published surveys and compares these with a third independent survey by the authors focusing upon the discrepancies between planned action and implemented action, introducing the term human factor element (hfe). Findings – The article concludes that annual carbon savings arising from implementation of the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) may be as low as 73.4?ktC over the five year term of the Kyoto Protocol even though 44 per cent of energy saving measure costs of £200 million are recouped within the same time period and savings will continue for up to 40 years. Achieving annual savings of only 14.7?ktC by 2010, such a figure represents a mere 0.3 per cent of the annual domestic 4.8?MtC savings announced by the government in its 2006 Climate Change Programme. Practical implications – Since the principal determinant in the uptake of ESMs is initial cost, it is considered that the EPBD is likely to remain an under-performing instrument in the promotion of energy sufficiency until such time as other complementary provisions are introduced. Inleiding: Per 1 januari 2012 geldt voor binnenlands vennootschapsbelastingplichtigen de „objectvrijstelling voor buitenlandse ondernemingswinsten‟.3 Deze methode ter voorkoming van internationaal juridische dubbele belasting vervangt de belastingvrijstellingsmethode voor actieve winst uit buitenlandse onderneming in de vennootschapsbelastingsfeer. Dit om te komen tot een meer gelijke fiscale behandeling van binnenlands vennootschapsbelastingplichtigen, die op directe wijze („vaste inrichting‟) of op indirecte wijze („deelneming‟) in het buitenland ondernemingsactiviteiten verrichten.4 Eén van de geïntroduceerde effecten is dat het fiscaal in aanmerking nemen van lopende reële verliezen uit een buitenlandse onderneming, gedreven met behulp van een in het buitenland gelegen vaste inrichting, niet langer is toegestaan. Impliciet rechtvaardigt de wetgever zijn systeemwijziging met de constatering dat de voorheen onder de belastingvrijstelling mogelijke tijdelijke fiscale verliesimport een „timingvoordeel‟ betreft. Deze woordkeuze verraadt een normatieve overweging. We schrappen een „voordeel‟ en komen zo tot een heffingssystematiek, op dit punt, zonder anomalieën. De wetgever suggereert een verbetering. An exploration of the option space in student design projects for uncertainty and sensitivity analysis with performance simulation

This paper describes research conducted to gather empirical evidence on extent, character and content of the option space in building design projects, from the perspective of a climate engineer using building performance simulation for concept evaluation. The goal is to support uncertainty analysis and sensitivity analysis integrated to building performance simulation (BPS) tools. The integration will need to assist design rather than automate design, allowing a spontaneous, creative and flexible process that acknowledges the expertise of the design team members. The paper investigates the emergent option space and its inherent uncertainties of an artificial setting (student design studios). The preliminary findings provide empirical evidence of the high variability of the option space that can be subjected to uncertainty analysis and sensitivity analysis

The squashed entanglement of the noiseless quantum Gaussian attenuator and amplifier

We determine the maximum squashed entanglement achievable between sender and receiver of the noiseless quantum Gaussian attenuators and amplifiers and we prove that it is achieved sending half of an infinitely squeezed two-mode vacuum state. The key ingredient of the proof is a lower bound to the squashed entanglement of the quantum Gaussian states obtained applying a two-mode squeezing operation to a quantum thermal Gaussian state tensored with the vacuum state. This is the first lower bound to the squashed entanglement of a quantum Gaussian state and opens the way to determine the squashed entanglement of all quantum Gaussian channels. Moreover, we determine the classical squashed entanglement of the quantum Gaussian states above and show that it is strictly larger than their squashed entanglement. This is the first time that the classical squashed entanglement of a mixed quantum Gaussian state is determined

Visserij in cijfers 2001

Deze jaarlijkse rapportage over de Nederlandse visserij bevat gegevens over de bedrijfsresultaten en financiële positie van de kottervisserij in 2001 met vergelijkende cijfers van voorgaande jaren. De opbrengst van de totale Nederlandse zee- en kustvisserij steeg tot 511 miljoen euro in 2001. Daarvan nam de Noordzee-kottervloot ruim 60% voor zijn rekening. De technische kosten (alle kosten exclusief loonbestanddelen) van de kottervloot daalden met 3%. Het aantal opvarenden nam af met 3% tot 1.773 full-time-equivalenten. De Nederlandse kotters voerden in totaal bijna 4% minder vis aan vergeleken met 2000. Voor de kottervisserij als geheel kwam het eigen vermogen begin 2001 uit op ongeveer 37% van het totaal balansvermogen. Dat is een verslechtering ten opzichte van begin 2000 toen de solvabiliteit nog 44% bedroeg. De aanvoer van mosselen kwam het afgelopen seizoen uit op 42 miljoen kilogram.Ten opzichte van het al magere aanvoerseizoen 2000/2001 betekent dit nog eens een verdere daling van 28

Meta-analysis of synaptic pathology in Alzheimer's disease reveals selective molecular vesicular machinery vulnerability

AbstractIntroductionLoss of synapses best correlates to cognitive deficits in Alzheimer's disease (AD) in which oligomeric neurotoxic species of amyloid-β appears to contribute synaptic pathology. Although a number of clinical pathologic studies have been performed with limited sample size, there are no systematic studies encompassing large samples. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis study.MethodsWe identified 417 publications reporting postmortem synapse and synaptic marker loss from AD patients. Two meta-analyses were performed using a single database of subselected publications and calculating the standard mean differences.ResultsMeta-analysis confirmed synaptic loss in selected brain regions is an early event in AD pathogenesis. The second meta-analysis of 57 synaptic markers revealed that presynaptic makers were affected more than postsynaptic markers.DiscussionThe present meta-analysis study showed a consistent synaptic loss across brain regions and that molecular machinery including endosomal pathways, vesicular assembly mechanisms, glutamate receptors, and axonal transport are often affected
