    Ram-pressure stripped molecular gas in the Virgo spiral galaxy NGC 4522

    IRAM 30m 12CO(1-0) and 12CO(2-1) HERA observations are presented for the ram-pressure stripped Virgo spiral galaxy NGC 4522. The CO emission is detected in the galactic disk and the extraplanar gas. The extraplanar CO emission follows the morphology of the atomic gas closely but is less extended. The CO maxima do not appear to correspond to regions where there is peak massive star formation as probed by Halpha emission. The presence of molecular gas is a necessary but not sufficient condition for star formation. Compared to the disk gas, the molecular fraction of the extraplanar gas is 30% lower and the star formation efficiency of the extraplanar gas is about 3 times lower. The comparison with an existing dynamical model extended by a recipe for distinguishing between atomic and molecular gas shows that a significant part of the gas is stripped in the form of overdense arm-like structures. It is argued that the molecular fraction depends on the square root of the total large-scale density. Based on the combination of the CO/Halpha and an analytical model, the total gas density is estimated to be about 4 times lower than that of the galactic disk. Molecules and stars form within this dense gas according to the same laws as in the galactic disk, i.e. they mainly depend on the total large-scale gas density. Star formation proceeds where the local large-scale gas density is highest. Given the complex 3D morphology this does not correspond to the peaks in the surface density.     NGC 4569: recent evidence for a past ram pressure stripping event

    Deep 21-cm HI line observations of the Virgo cluster spiral galaxy NGC 4569 have been obtained with the VLA in its D configuration and with the Effelsberg 100-m telescope. A low surface density arm was discovered in the west of the galaxy, whose velocity field is distinct from that of the overall disk rotation. The observed gas distribution, velocity field, and velocity dispersion are compared to snapshots of dynamical simulations that include the effects of ram pressure. Two different scenarios were explored: (i) ongoing stripping and (ii) a major stripping event that took place about 300 Myr ago. It is concluded that only the post-stripping scenario can reproduce the main observed characteristics of NGC 4569. It is not possible to determine if the gas disk of NGC 4569 had already been truncated before it underwent the ram pressure event that lead to its observed HI deficiency.Comment: 13 pages, 15 figures.     Phase Separation in Binary Fluid Mixtures with Continuously Ramped Temperature

    We consider the demixing of a binary fluid mixture, under gravity, which is steadily driven into a two phase region by slowly ramping the temperature. We assume, as a first approximation, that the system remains spatially isothermal, and examine the interplay of two competing nonlinearities. One of these arises because the supersaturation is greatest far from the meniscus, creating inversion of the density which can lead to fluid motion; although isothermal, this is somewhat like the Benard problem (a single-phase fluid heated from below). The other is the intrinsic diffusive instability which results either in nucleation or in spinodal decomposition at large supersaturations. Experimental results on a simple binary mixture show interesting oscillations in heat capacity and optical properties for a wide range of ramp parameters. We argue that these oscillations arise under conditions where both nonlinearities are important

    Sustained emission of low energy solar particles with a composition richer in iron than oxygen is observed in the time period 1974 May 7 to 17. Between 0.7 and 4 MeV/nucleon the relative abundances of C:O:Fe are 0.24:1:1.35. It was suggested that these observations provide indication for effects of heavy ion enrichment in the lower corona of the sun

    Differential energy spectra of low energy (less than 8.5 MeV per nucleon) heavy cosmic rays during solar quiet times

    Explorer 47 satellite observations of carbon, oxygen, and heavier nuclei differential energy spectra below 8.5 MeV/nucleon are presented for solar quiet time periods. A dE/dx vs E method for particle identification and energy determination was used. The instrumentation telescope included an isobutane proportional counter, a surface barrier Si detector, and a cylindrical plastic scintillator anticoincidence shield. The observations were performed outside the bow-shock and in the ecliptic plane. Results show an anisotropy of about 25% at 22 degrees west of the sun with a C/O ratio of 0.5 supporting a solar origin. The low energy portions of the C and O spectra have steep negative slopes, and the corresponding power law is given. Peculiarities in the O spectrum are discussed

    Children with neonatal Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) treated with therapeutic hypothermia are not as school ready as their peers

    Aim: We aimed to determine whether children with neonatal hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) treated with therapeutic hypothermia (TH) differ from their peers on measures of fine motor skills, executive function, language and general cognitive abilities; factors that are important for school readiness. Methods: We compared school readiness in 31children with HIE treated with TH (without Cerebral Palsy; mean age 5 years 4 months) with 20 typically developing children without HIE (mean age 5 years 6 months). Results: Children with HIE scored significantly lower than typically developing children on fine motor skills, executive functions, memory and language. Conclusion: While general cognitive abilities and attainment were in the normal range, our findings suggest those scores mask specific underlying difficulties identified by more focussed assessments. Children with HIE treated with TH may not be as “school ready” as their typically developing classmates and may benefit from long-term follow-up until starting school
