With the aim at exploring the environmental awareness of the young sector in a predominantly indigenous community, fifty structured street interviews were applied to young individuals, aged 14 to 21, attending schools at Turuachi, a distant undeveloped rural community in the Sierra Tarahumara, in the State of Chihuahua, Northern Mexico. The data were analyzed by the software SPSS® (Statistical Package for Social Sciences). Most of the interviewees showed a good knowledge of basic ecology concepts. However, their perception of environmental problems appeared to be more influenced by everyday experiences. Despite forest being a major natural resource in the area, the group studied viewed cropping as the main economic activity. The main environmental problem was garbage pollution followed by deforestation and drought. The Chi2 test showed that women had a stronger perception than men about the garbage issue (p<0.057) and a clear disposition (p<0.001) to participate in municipal cleaning campaigns. Nearly all the participants were willing to engage in activities to preserve environmental quality; community action and specific workshops were selected as viable organization alternatives. Key words: environmental education, community participation, environmental problems

Impact of Dietetic Intervention on Skin Autofluorescence and Nutritional Status in Persons Receiving Dialysis: A Proof of Principle Study

Objective: Advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) are uremic toxins that result from oxidative stress and food consumption. We have previously reported that markers of malnutrition are more important determinants of increased skin autofluorescence (SAF), a measure of AGE accumulation and risk factor for mortality, than high dietary AGE intake in a hemodialysis (HD) population, suggesting that correcting malnutrition may decrease SAF. Design and methods: We investigated this hypothesis in a single center, non-randomized proof of principle study. We enrolled 27 HD and one peritoneal dialysis (PD) patient with malnutrition who received individualized nutritional advice and support over 6 months. SAF was measured at baseline, 3 and 6 months. Dietary intake and nutritional status were assessed at baseline and 6 months. Results were compared with a control group of malnourished dialysis patients (n= 41 HD and 8 PD) from a previous observational study

At the Olympic Village a number of separate sectors were planned, namely: men's residential zone, ladies' residential zone, press and T.V. zone, general services, administrative services, reception, and others. Apartment buildings are of two types. Some have six storeys and others ten, and all of them have four apartments per storey. The whole Village was designed so that, after the Games, it could serve as a low rent urban zone, of common property, and consisting of 29 buildings, with a total of 900 flats, as well as schools, clinics, commercial zones, parochial church, club and a folkloric stage.

A.C.John D. and Catherine T. NiIIcyclam-modified nanoparticulate TiO2-coated ITO electrodes (ITO/TiO2//NiIIcyclam) were prepared by electropolymerization of NiIIcyclam monomers to TiO2-coated ITO electrodes (ITO/TiO2) to improve electrocatalytic urea CO(NH2)2 oxidation in alkaline aqueous solutions. A high value adding secondary effect was the collection of electrons at Pt cathodes, to simultaneously generate H2 from water reduction. NiIIcyclam-modified ITO electrodes (ITO//NiIIcyclam) were also prepared by electropolymerization of NiIIcyclam monomers to bare ITO electrodes (ITO) for comparison purposes. In the presence of the TiO2 nanoparticles, the urea mineralization on NiIIcyclam coatings was doubled (23.95% – organic carbon removal at 120 min of electrolysis) compared to those without TiO2 nanoparticles (13.02% – organic carbon removal at 120 min of electrolysis). In agreement, the faradaic efficiency for H2 generation at the Pt cathode, electrically connected to an anode having TiO2 nanoparticles (0.99 at 120 min of electrolysis), was also twice as effective than that observed when the same Pt cathode was electrically connected to an anode without TiO2 nanoparticles (0.46 at 120 min of electrolysis). The experimental results indicated that the poisoning of NiII centers (which is caused by an excessive production of CO intermediates during the urea oxidation on both NiIIcyclam-modified anodes) was strongly inhibited in the presence of the nanoparticulate TiO2|NiIIcyclam junction. A final comparison between our results and those reported in selected publications revealed that the NiIIcyclam-modified nanoparticulate TiO2-coated ITO anodes here developed, constitutes a promising electrocatalytic system for performing direct urea mineralization at a relative short electrolysis time. Furthermore, the combination of the following phenomena: (a) effective charge separation on the semiconducting ITO|nanoparticulate TiO2 junctions, (b) remarkable capabilities of the nanoporous TiO2 films for tuning the load of OH anions demanded by the urea oxidation and, (c) outstanding capabilities of the TiO2 nanoparticles for capturing CO intermediates (at Ti3+ donor sites), successfully promoted the enhancement of the electron external transport to Pt cathodes, and consequently improved the faradaic efficiency associated to the cathodic generation of H2

Analysis of Restructuring the Mexican Electricity Sector to Operate in a Wholesale Energy Market

    No full text
This paper analyzes the energy reform that has taken place in Mexico since 2013, driven by steady growth in energy demand and insufficient economic resources. The relevant points in the restructuring process are discussed, shedding light on the impact of recent governmental actions not aligned with the original spirit of the law. This research uses a framework and fundamentals of a well-organized structural process called the textbook model, making a comparative analysis of Mexican reform. It proceeds by presenting the Mexican Electrical System in numbers and how it is affected by the present government’s restructuring process providing positive and negative impacts of several implementations. The main objectives of restructuring were carried out to attract private investment and increase the reliability and efficiency of the system. During the first four years, the reform has attracted investment, in diminishing form in generation but not in transmission and distribution. Therefore, the main reason for this is explained and a brief analysis and the roots of these failures are presented. It is shown that recent political decisions tend to keep the system operator and regulatory agencies under Federal Government control so that it is acting against the main objectives of the original reform. Finally, a summary of the deviation of the reality from the existing law is outlined
