    O direito à memória e o ensino da História do conflito armado colombiano em um ambiente museal.

    O direito à memória é o direito que tem a sociedade de conhecer, lembrar e procurar a verdade sobre seu próprio passado, sobretudo em situações de violência recente como é o conflito armado colombiano. O direito à memória pode ser garantido ou negado no campo da didatização da história. O ensino de história também acontece em espaços não escolarizados como os museus. O tema da pesquisa é: como os estudantes constroem explicações históricas sobre o conflito armado colombiano em um ambiente museal, e sua relação com o direito à memória. O trabalho de campo se desenvolve na Casa Museu Jorge Eliécer Gaitán (Bogotá - Colômbia), com estudantes das três últimas séries do sistema escolar colombiano. Partimos do pressuposto de que a Casa Museu Gaitán está vinculada não só a um passado doloroso, mas também a um presente conflituoso. As temporalidades superpostas deste espaço museal, são analisadas através das relações entre história acadêmica, história escolar e história cotidiana. Por isto, dialoga-se também com os conteúdos propostos para à área de Ciências Sociais e o livro didático. Garantir um direito à memória através do ensino de história, passa por combater as pretensões oficiais de impor uma memória única do passado, e oferecer ferramentas para que os estudantes possam construir explicações históricas a partir do raciocínio crítico. Isto é possível quando os estudantes confrontam as diferentes vozes que relatam o passado recente. No caso colombiano, garantir o direito à memória através do ensino de história da violência recente, é ainda mais complexo pela função que desenvolve o próprio Estado colombiano no meio do conflito armado

    Potential Anti-cancer and Anti-bacterial Activities of Philippine Echinoderm Extracts

    In high-throughput search for bioactive compounds under resource-limited settings from Philippine echinoderms, the aqueous, methanol, chloroform and hexane extracts of seven Philippine echinoderms namely Holothuria nobilis (sea cucumber), Bohadscia marmorata (sea cucumber), Stichopus chloronatus (sea cucumber), Holothuria axiologa (sea cucumber), Linckia laevigata (starfish), Oreaster nodusus (starfish) and Ophiocoma ochoenleinii (brittle star) were screened for antitumor and antibacterial activity. Antitumor activity was determined using brine shrimp lethality assay while antibacterial assay was performed using turbidimetric method. Both assays utilized 96-well microtiter plates to facilitate speed and ease in screening. The chloroform extract of H. nobilis gave a positive result on antitumor activity while almost all sample extracts showed antibacterial activity against E. coli

    Effect of femoral head size, subject weight and activity level on acetabular cement mantle stress following total hip arthroplasty

    In cases where cemented components are used in total hip arthroplasty, damage or disruption of the cement mantle can lead to aseptic loosening and joint failure. Currently, the relationship between subject activity level, obesity and prosthetic femoral head size and the risk of aseptic loosening of the acetabular component in cemented THA is not well understood. This study aims to provide an insight into this. Finite element models, validated with experimental data, were developed to investigate stresses in the acetabular cement mantle and pelvic bone resulting from the use of three prosthetic femoral head sizes, during a variety of daily activities and one high impact activity (stumbling) for a range of subject body weights. We found that stresses in the superior quadrants of the cortical bone‐cement interface increased with prosthetic head size, patient weight and activity level. In stumbling, average von Mises stresses (22.4 MPa) exceeded the bone cement yield strength for an obese subject (143 kg) indicating that the cement mantle would fail. Our results support the view that obesity and activity level are potential risk factors for aseptic loosening of the acetabular component and provide insight into the increased risk of joint failure associated with larger prosthetic femoral heads

    A novel compact dq-reference frame model for inverter-based microgrids

    The development and the experimental validation of a novel dynamic model of an islanded three-phase Inverter-based Microgrid (IMG) is presented in this paper. The proposed model reproduces the relevant system dynamics without excessive complexity and enough accuracy. The dynamics of the IMG are captured with a compact and scalable dynamic model, considering inverter based distributed generators with d-current droop primary and proportional resonant inner controllers. The complete development of the model, the practical assumptions, and the accurate proportional power sharing of the primary control technique are shown. The accuracy performance was verified in experiments performed at the Aalborg Intelligent Microgrids Laboratory for an islanded IMG case

    Alterations in microbial community composition with increasing fCO2: a mesocosm study in the eastern Baltic Sea

    Ocean acidification resulting from the uptake of anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2</sub>) by the ocean is considered a major threat to marine ecosystems. Here we examined the effects of ocean acidification on microbial community dynamics in the eastern Baltic Sea during the summer of 2012 when inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus were strongly depleted. Large-volume in situ mesocosms were employed to mimic present, future and far future CO<sub>2</sub> scenarios. All six groups of phytoplankton enumerated by flow cytometry ( &lt;  20 µm cell diameter) showed distinct trends in net growth and abundance with CO<sub>2</sub> enrichment. The picoeukaryotic phytoplankton groups Pico-I and Pico-II displayed enhanced abundances, whilst Pico-III, <i>Synechococcus</i> and the nanoeukaryotic phytoplankton groups were negatively affected by elevated fugacity of CO<sub>2</sub> (<i>f</i>CO<sub>2</sub>). Specifically, the numerically dominant eukaryote, Pico-I, demonstrated increases in gross growth rate with increasing <i>f</i>CO<sub>2</sub> sufficient to double its abundance. The dynamics of the prokaryote community closely followed trends in total algal biomass despite differential effects of <i>f</i>CO<sub>2</sub> on algal groups. Similarly, viral abundances corresponded to prokaryotic host population dynamics. Viral lysis and grazing were both important in controlling microbial abundances. Overall our results point to a shift, with increasing <i>f</i>CO<sub>2</sub>, towards a more regenerative system with production dominated by small picoeukaryotic phytoplankton.</p

    Long-term Monitoring of a Successful Recovery Program of Peregrine Falcons in Virginia

    The Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus anatum) was believed to be extirpated as a breeding species in Virginia by the early 1960s. An aggressive restoration program was initiated in 1978 that involved the release of captive-reared birds totaling 115 on the Coastal Plain (1978–1985) and 127 in the Mountain physiographic region (1985–1993). The first occupied territory was established and the first breeding attempt was documented in 1979 and 1982, respectively. We have monitored the size, distribution, reproductive rate, and substrate use of the resulting breeding population (1979–2016). The population proceeded through an establishment phase (1979–1993) driven by releases with an average doubling time of 3.8 yrs to a consolidation phase (1994– 2016) with an average doubling time of 23.1 yrs. The state supported 31 breeding pairs by 2016. Per capita reproductive rates have increased significantly over the study period from 0.89 (1979–1993) to 1.86 (1994–2016). Average nesting success increased from 67.1% to 82.7% over the same period. Nesting attempts (n = 469) have been documented on dedicated peregrine towers (52.1%), bridges (26.1%), buildings (4.1%), and various manmade structures (13.0%) with only 4.7% documented on natural cliffs. The population appears to be self-sustaining with reproductive rates exceeding 1.5 young/pair every year since 1999. An ongoing management concern is that only 8.9% of known territories (n = 45) identified since introductions and 4.7% of documented breeding attempts (n = 469) have occurred within the historic mountain breeding range
