2D PbS Nanosheets Synthesis and Their Applications as Field Effect Transistors or Solar Cells
Two-dimensional, solution-processable semiconductor materials are interesting for low-cost electronic applications [1]. We demonstrate the synthesis of lead sulfide nanosheets and how their size, shape and height can be tuned by varying concentrations of pre-cursors, ligands and by varying the reaction temperature. Especially, the charge carrier confinement in the nanosheets' height adjustable from 2 to 20 nm has a decisive impact on their electronic properties. This is demonstrated by their use as conduction channel in a field effect transistor [2]. Recently we also showed that especially thin nanosheets show a high carrier multiplication (CM) efficiency [3] which could make them, through the confinement induced band gap and high photoconductivity, very attractive for application in photovoltaic devices. We are already able to manufacture photovoltaic devices out of single nanosheets which show promising results

Data-driven learning how oncogenic gene expression locally alters heterocellular networks
Developing drugs increasingly relies on mechanistic modeling and simulation. Models that capture causal relations among genetic drivers of oncogenesis, functional plasticity, and host immunity complement wet experiments. Unfortunately, formulating such mechanistic cell-level models currently relies on hand curation, which can bias how data is interpreted or the priority of drug targets. In modeling molecular-level networks, rules and algorithms are employed to limit a priori biases in formulating mechanistic models. Here we combine digital cytometry with Bayesian network inference to generate causal models of cell-level networks linking an increase in gene expression associated with oncogenesis with alterations in stromal and immune cell subsets from bulk transcriptomic datasets. We predict how increased Cell Communication Network factor 4, a secreted matricellular protein, alters the tumor microenvironment using data from patients diagnosed with breast cancer and melanoma. Predictions are then tested using two immunocompetent mouse models for melanoma, which provide consistent experimental results
Crystallographic studies on decameric Brucella spp. lumazine synthase: A novel quaternary arrangement evolved for a new function?
The enzyme lumazine synthase (LS) catalyzes the penultimate step of riboflavin biosynthesis in plants, fungi and bacteria. The quaternary structure of the polypeptide differs between species, existing as pentamers or as icosahedrally arranged dodecamers of pentamers with 60 subunits. The pathogen Brucella spp. expresses two proteins that exhibit LS activity, RibH1 and RibH2. The latter enzyme belongs to a novel third category of quaternary arrangement for LS, that of a decameric structure assembled as a head-to-head oriented dimer of pentamers. In contrast, the RibH1 enzyme is assembled as a pentamer, as noted for several other LS enzymes. RibH1 appears to be the functional LS in Brucella spp., whereas RibH2, an enzyme of lower catalytic activity, is a virulence factor presumably acting in response to oxidative stress. The latter observation prompted us to further investigate the structural and catalytic properties of RibH2 in order to clarify the biological function of this enzyme. Here, we present a detailed analysis of two new crystallographic forms of RibH2 that explain the low catalytic activity of this enzyme in comparison with RibH1 and other LSs. Additionally, we analyze the effect of pH on the structure of this enzyme, and the binding of riboflavin and 6,7-dimethyl-8-ribityllumazine to its active site.Fil: Klinke, Sebastian. Field-effect transistors assembled from functionalized carbon nanotubes
We have fabricated field effect transistors from carbon nanotubes using a
novel selective placement scheme. We use carbon nanotubes that are covalently
bound to molecules containing hydroxamic acid functionality. The functionalized
nanotubes bind strongly to basic metal oxide surfaces, but not to silicon
dioxide. Upon annealing, the functionalization is removed, restoring the
electronic properties of the nanotubes. The devices we have fabricated show
excellent electrical characteristics.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure
Horizon effects with surface waves on moving water
Surface waves on a stationary flow of water are considered, in a linear model
that includes the surface tension of the fluid. The resulting gravity-capillary
waves experience a rich array of horizon effects when propagating against the
flow. In some cases three horizons (points where the group velocity of the wave
reverses) exist for waves with a single laboratory frequency. Some of these
effects are familiar in fluid mechanics under the name of wave blocking, but
other aspects, in particular waves with negative co-moving frequency and the
Hawking effect, were overlooked until surface waves were investigated as
examples of analogue gravity [Sch\"utzhold R and Unruh W G 2002 Phys. Rev. D 66
044019]. A comprehensive presentation of the various horizon effects for
gravity-capillary waves is given, with emphasis on the deep water/short
wavelength case kh>>1 where many analytical results can be derived. A
similarity of the state space of the waves to that of a thermodynamic system is
pointed out.Comment: 30 pages, 15 figures. Minor change
