An experimental study of the P-V-T-S relations of seawater
The compressibility of seawater has been determined as a function of salinity, pressure, and temperature. Specific volumes have been computed. The salinities, as measured on a University of Washington-type conductivity bridge, were 0.00, 30.52, 34.99, and 41.03‰. The pressure range was from r to r 300 bars and the temperature range from 0°C to 25°C. The structural analyses of [3-(PPh₃)-3-I-4-(SMe₂)-closo-3,1,2-PdC₂B₉H₁₀] or [Pd(C₄H₁₆B₉S)I(C₁₈H₁₅P)], (I), and [3-(PPhMe₂)-3-Cl-4-(SMe₂)-closo-3,1,2-PdC₂B₉H₁₀] or [Pd(C₄H₁₆B₉S)Cl(C₈H₁₁P)], (II), show that in comparison with [3-(PR₃)2-closo-3,1,2-PdC₂B₉H₁₁] the presence of the 4-SMe₂ group causes the [PdX(PR₃)] unit (X = halogen) to twist about an axis passing through the Pd atom and the directly opposite B atom of the carbaborane ligand. The halogen atoms are located almost directly above a C atom in the C₂B₃ face, and the conformations of the [PdX(PR₃)] units above the C₂B₃ faces are not those predicted from molecular orbital calculations of the closo-3,1,2-PdC₂B₉ system. The fact that the variation from the predicted conformation is greater in the case of (I) than in (II) may be ascribed to the greater steric interactions induced by the I atom in (I) compared with the Cl atom in (II)
Temperature and Precipitation Affect Seasonal Patterns of Dispersing Tobacco Thrips, Frankliniella fusca, and Onion Thrips, Thrips tabaci (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) Caught on Sticky Traps
Effects of temperature and precipitation on the temporal patterns of dispersing tobacco thrips, Frankliniella fusca, and onion thrips, Thrips tabaci, caught on yellow sticky traps were estimated in central and eastern North Carolina and eastern Virginia from 1997 through 2001. The impact that these environmental factors had on numbers of F. fusca and T. tabaci caught on sticky traps during April and May was determined using stepwise regression analysis of 43 and 38 site-years of aerial trapping data from 21 and 18 different field locations, respectively. The independent variables used in the regression models included degree-days, total precipitation, and the number of days in which precipitation occurred during January through May. Each variable was significant in explaining variation for both thrips species and, in all models, degree-days was the single best explanatory variable. Precipitation had a comparatively greater effect on T. tabaci than F. fusca. The numbers of F. fusca and T. tabaci captured in flight were positively related to degree-days and the number of days with precipitation but negatively related to total precipitation. Combined in a single model, degree-days, total precipitation, and the number of days with precipitation explained 70 and 55% of the total variation in the number of F. fusca captured from 1 April through 10 May and from 1 April through 31 May, respectively. Melarsoprol cyclodextrin inclusion complexes as promising oral candidates for the treatment of human African trypanosomiasis
Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT), or sleeping sickness, results from infection with the protozoan parasites <i>Trypanosoma brucei</i> (<i>T.b.</i>) <i>gambiense</i> or <i>T.b.rhodesiense</i> and is invariably fatal if untreated. There are 60 million people at risk from the disease throughout sub-Saharan Africa. The infection progresses from the haemolymphatic stage where parasites invade the blood, lymphatics and peripheral organs, to the late encephalitic stage where they enter the central nervous system (CNS) to cause serious neurological disease. The trivalent arsenical drug melarsoprol (Arsobal) is the only currently available treatment for CNS-stage <i>T.b.rhodesiense</i> infection. However, it must be administered intravenously due to the presence of propylene glycol solvent and is associated with numerous adverse reactions. A severe post-treatment reactive encephalopathy occurs in about 10% of treated patients, half of whom die. Thus melarsoprol kills 5% of all patients receiving it. Cyclodextrins have been used to improve the solubility and reduce the toxicity of a wide variety of drugs. We therefore investigated two melarsoprol cyclodextrin inclusion complexes; melarsoprol hydroxypropyl-͎-cyclodextrin and melarsoprol randomly-methylated-β-cyclodextrin. We found that these compounds retain trypanocidal properties <i>in vitro</i> and cure CNS-stage murine infections when delivered orally, once per day for 7-days, at a dosage of 0.05 mmol/kg. No overt signs of toxicity were detected. Parasite load within the brain was rapidly reduced following treatment onset and magnetic resonance imaging showed restoration of normal blood-brain barrier integrity on completion of chemotherapy. These findings strongly suggest that complexed melarsoprol could be employed as an oral treatment for CNS-stage HAT, delivering considerable improvements over current parenteral chemotherapy
Extinction and the Dimming of KIC 8462852
To test alternative hypotheses for the behavior of KIC 8462852, we obtained
measurements of the star over a wide wavelength range from the UV to the
mid-infrared from October 2015 through December 2016, using Swift, Spitzer and
at AstroLAB IRIS. The star faded in a manner similar to the long-term fading
seen in Kepler data about 1400 days previously. The dimming rate for the entire
period reported is 22.1 +\- 9.7 milli-mag/yr in the Swift wavebands, with
amounts of 21.0 +\- 4.5 mmag in the groundbased B measurements, 14.0 +\- 4.5
mmag in V, and 13.0 +\- 4.5 in R, and a rate of 5.0 +\- 1.2 mmag/yr averaged
over the two warm Spitzer bands. Although the dimming is small, it is seen at
>= 3 sigma by three different observatories operating from the UV to the IR.
The presence of long-term secular dimming means that previous SED models of the
star based on photometric measurements taken years apart may not be accurate.
We find that stellar models with T_{eff} = 7000 - 7100 K and A_V ~ 0.73 best
fit the Swift data from UV to optical. These models also show no excess in the
near-simultaneous Spitzer photometry at 3.6 and 4.5 microns, although a longer
wavelength excess from a substantial debris disk is still possible (e.g., as
around Fomalhaut). The wavelength dependence of the fading favors a relatively
neutral color (i.e., R_V >= 5, but not flat across all the bands) compared with
the extinction law for the general ISM (R_V = 3.1), suggesting that the dimming

Resolved Debris Discs Around A Stars in the Herschel DEBRIS Survey
The majority of debris discs discovered so far have only been detected
through infrared excess emission above stellar photospheres. While disc
properties can be inferred from unresolved photometry alone under various
assumptions for the physical properties of dust grains, there is a degeneracy
between disc radius and dust temperature that depends on the grain size
distribution and optical properties. By resolving the disc we can measure the
actual location of the dust. The launch of Herschel, with an angular resolution
superior to previous far-infrared telescopes, allows us to spatially resolve
more discs and locate the dust directly. Here we present the nine resolved
discs around A stars between 20 and 40 pc observed by the DEBRIS survey. We use
these data to investigate the disc radii by fitting narrow ring models to
images at 70, 100 and 160 {\mu}m and by fitting blackbodies to full spectral
energy distributions. We do this with the aim of finding an improved way of
estimating disc radii for unresolved systems. The ratio between the resolved
and blackbody radii varies between 1 and 2.5. This ratio is inversely
correlated with luminosity and any remaining discrepancies are most likely
explained by differences to the minimum size of grain in the size distribution
or differences in composition. We find that three of the systems are well fit
by a narrow ring, two systems are borderline cases and the other four likely
require wider or multiple rings to fully explain the observations, reflecting

Treatment of bronchial airway obstruction using a rotating tip microdebrider: a case report
BACKGROUND: Central airway obstruction is a common complication of lung cancer. The microdebrider is a new device available for treatment of central airway obstruction. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a case a 59-yr-old male with T3N2M1 non-small cell lung cancer with malignant distal left mainstem obstruction treated successfully with a novel elongated rotating tip microdebrider via rigid bronchoscopy with sufficient length to reach distal bronchial lesions. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: The microdebrider is an excellent addition to the spectrum of interventions available for the management of central airway obstruction with advantages including accuracy and immediate removal of debris without a need for separate suctioning or limitation in oxygenation
