TRADE GAINS AND WELFARE COSTS OF INCOME STABILIZATION PROGRAMS FOR HOG PRODUCERS IN QUEBEC
The welfare costs of deficiency payments for an exported commodity may, under certain conditions, outweigh the gains from trade. The potential welfare impacts of stabilization programs in the hog sector in Quebec are estimated, based on a partial equilibrium framework, and elasticity estimates drawn from other sources. Grain opacity and the bulk composition of extrasolar planets. I. Results from scaling the ISM opacity
The opacity due to grains in the envelope of a protoplanet regulates the
accretion rate of gas during formation, thus the final bulk composition of
planets with primordial H/He is a function of it. Observationally, for
exoplanets with known mass and radius it is possible to estimate the bulk
composition via internal structure models. We first determine the reduction
factor of the ISM grain opacity f_opa that leads to gas accretion rates
consistent with grain evolution models. We then compare the bulk composition of
synthetic low-mass and giant planets at different f_opa with observations. For
f_opa=1 (full ISM opacity) the synthetic low-mass planets have too small radii,
i.e., too low envelope masses compared to observations. At f_opa=0.003, the
value calibrated with the grain evolution models, synthetic and actual planets
occupy similar mass-radius loci. The mean enrichment of giant planets relative
to the host star as a function of planet mass M can be approximated as
Z_p/Z_star = beta*(M/M_Jup)^alpha. We find alpha=-0.7 independent of f_opa in
synthetic populations in agreement with the observational result (-0.71+-0.10).
The absolute enrichment level decreases from beta=8.5 at f_opa=1 to 3.5 at
f_opa=0. At f_opa=0.003 one finds beta=7.2 which is similar to the
observational result (6.3+-1.0). We thus find observational hints that the
opacity in protoplanetary atmospheres is much smaller than in the ISM even if
the specific value of the grain opacity cannot be constrained here. The result
for the enrichment of giant planets helps to distinguish core accretion and
gravitational instability. In the simplest picture of core accretion where
first a critical core forms and afterwards only gas is added, alpha=-1. If a
core accretes all planetesimals inside the feeding zone, alpha=-2/3. The
observational result lies between these values, pointing to core accretion as

Impacts of planet migration models on planetary populations. Effects of saturation, cooling and stellar irradiation
Context: Several recent studies have found that planet migration in adiabatic
discs differs significantly from migration in isothermal discs. Depending on
the thermodynamic conditions, i.e., the effectiveness of radiative cooling, and
the radial surface density profile, planets migrate inward or outward. Clearly,
this will influence the semimajor axis - mass distribution of planets as
predicted by population synthesis simulations. Aims: Our goal is to study the
global effects of radiative cooling, viscous torque desaturation and gap
opening as well as stellar irradiation on the tidal migration of a synthetic
planet population. Methods: We combine results from several analytical studies
and 3D hydrodynamic simulations in a new semi-analytical migration model for
the application in our planet population synthesis calculations. Results: We
find a good agreement of our model with torques obtained in a 3D radiative
hydrodynamic simulations. We find three convergence zones in a typical disc,
towards which planets migrate from the in- and outside, affecting strongly the
migration behavior of low-mass planets. Interestingly, this leads to slow type
II like migration behavior for low-mass planets captured in those zones even
without an ad hoc migration rate reduction factor or a yet to be defined
halting mechanism. This means that the new prescription of migration including
non-isothermal effects makes the preciously widely used artificial migration
rate reduction factor obsolete. Conclusions: Outward migration in parts of a
disc makes some planets survive long enough to become massive. The convergence
zones lead to a potentially observable accumulations of low-mass planets at
certain semimajor axes. Our results indicate that further studies of the mass
where the corotation torque saturates will be needed since its value has a

Infrared Spectra of Meteoritic SiC Grains
We present here the first infrared spectra of meteoritic SiC grains. The
mid-infrared transmission spectra of meteoritic SiC grains isolated from the
Murchison meteorite were measured in the wavelength range 2.5--16.5 micron, in
order to make available the optical properties of presolar SiC grains. These
grains are most likely stellar condensates with an origin predominately in
carbon stars. Measurements were performed on two different extractions of
presolar SiC from the Murchison meteorite. The two samples show very different
spectral appearance due to different grain size distributions. The spectral
feature of the smaller meteoritic SiC grains is a relatively broad absorption
band found between the longitudinal and transverse lattice vibration modes
around 11.3 micron, supporting the current interpretation about the presence of
SiC grains in carbon stars. In contrast to this, the spectral feature of the
large (> 5 micron) grains has an extinction minimum around 10 micron. The
obtained spectra are compared with commercially available SiC grains and the
differences are discussed. This comparison shows that the crystal structure
(e.g., beta-SiC versus alpha-SiC) of SiC grains plays a minor role on the
optical signature of SiC grains compared to e.g. grain size.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures. To appear in A&
Infrared properties of SiC particles
We present basic laboratory infrared data on a large number of SiC
particulate samples, which should be of great value for the interpretation of
the 11.3 micron feature observed in the spectra of carbon-rich stars. The
laboratory spectra show a wide variety of the SiC phonon features in the 10-13
micron wavelength range, both in peak wavelength and band shape. The main
parameters determining the band profile are morphological factors as grain size
and shape and, in many cases, impurities in the material. We discovered the
interesting fact that free charge carriers, generated e.g. by nitrogen doping,
are a very common characteristics of many SiC particle samples. These free
charge carriers produce very strong plasmon absorption in the near and middle
infrared, which may also heavily influence the 10-13 micron feature profile via
plasmon-phonon coupling.
We also found that there is no systematic dependence of the band profile on
the crystal type (alpha- vs. beta-SiC). This is proven both experimentally and
by theoretical calculations based on a study of the SiC phonon frequencies.
Further, we give optical constants of amorphous SiC. We discuss the
implications of the new laboratory results for the interpretation of the

Efficiency of thermal relaxation by radiative processes in protoplanetary discs: constraints on hydrodynamic turbulence
Hydrodynamic, non-magnetic instabilities can provide turbulent stress in the
regions of protoplanetary discs, where the MRI can not develop. The induced
motions influence the grain growth, from which formation of planetesimals
begins. Thermal relaxation of the gas constrains origins of the identified
hydrodynamic sources of turbulence in discs.
We estimate the radiative relaxation timescale of temperature perturbations
and study the dependence of this timescale on the perturbation wavelength, the
location within the disc, the disc mass, and the dust-to-gas mass ratio. We
then apply thermal relaxation criteria to localise modes of the convective
overstability, the vertical shear instability, and the zombie vortex
instability.
Our calculations employed the latest tabulated dust and gas mean opacities
and we account for the collisional coupling to the emitting species.
The relaxation criterion defines the bulk of a typical T Tauri disc as
unstable to the development of linear hydrodynamic instabilities. The midplane
is unstable to the convective overstability from at most 2\mbox{ au} and up
to 40\mbox{ au}, as well as beyond 140\mbox{ au}. The vertical shear
instability can develop between 15\mbox{ au} and 180\mbox{ au}. The
successive generation of (zombie) vortices from a seeded noise can work within
the inner 0{.}8\mbox{ au}.
Dynamic disc modelling with the evolution of dust and gas opacities is
required to clearly localise the hydrodynamic turbulence, and especially its

Seeding mixtures for hay, pasture and silage

Carbon/graphite fiber risk analysis and assessment study: An assessment of the risk to Douglas commercial transport aircraft
The potential hazard to electrical and electronic devices should there be a release of free carbon fibers due to an aircraft crash and fire was assessed. Exposure and equipment sensitivity data were compiled for a risk analysis. Results are presented in the following areas: DC-9/DC-10 electrical/electronic component characterization; DC-9 and DC-10 fiber transfer functions; potential for transport aircraft equipment exposure to carbon fibers; and equipment vulnerability assessment. Results reflect only a negligible increase in risk for the DC-9 and DC-10 fleets either now or projected to 1993
