    MECHANICAL COMPARISON BETWEEN ROUNDHOUSE KICK TO THE CHEST AND TO THE HEAD IN FUNCTION OF EXECUTION DISTANCE IN TAEKWONDO

    The purpose of this research was to examine and compare maximum impact force (MIF) and execution time (ET) in two different Taekwondo techniques, roundhouse kick to the chest (Bandal Chagui) and roundhouse kick to the head (Dolio Chagui) in terms of the execution distance and to analyse the relationship between maximum impact force and weight for two different groups and kicks. To measure the mechanical parameters, a model explained in Falco et al. (2009) was used. In this study, the 23 male taekwondo players participating were divided into two groups: medallists (n = 12) and non-medallists (n = 11). For the medallists’ group no differences had been found in MIF or ET from either distance between roundhouse kick to the chest and to the head. However, significant differences were found in MIF in the non-medallists’ group from all execution distances between roundhouse kick to the chest and to the head. For the non-medallists’ group, weight significantly predicts MIF, but not in the medallists' group. In conclusion, medallist taekwondo players should perform roundhouse kick to the head instead to the chest, because it produces a better score in the same time

    KINETIC AND KINEMATIC ANALYSIS OF THE DOMINANT AND NON-DOMINANT KICKING LEG IN THE TAEKWONDO ROUNDHOUSE KICK

    The purpose of this study was to examine kinematic variables relevant to kick performance with the dominant and non-dominant leg, in a roundhouse kick measured from three execution distances. Forty-three taekwondo athletes that had competitive taekwondo experience participated in the study. A dependent t-test indicated that there were no differences between extremities at any distance (p > .01). Based on these results, competitive taekwondo players do not seem to reveal differences in limb kinematics. The results also showed the influence of the distance from which the dominant leg explains a larger percentage of variance in reaction time (24%), execution time (20%) and total response time (60%) of the non-dominant leg from a short distance, whereas regarding impact force (22%), this higher percentage is explained from a long distance

    MCP1 SNPs and Pulmonary Tuberculosis in Cohorts from West Africa, the USA and Argentina: Lack of Association or Epistasis with IL12B Polymorphisms

    The monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1) is a chemokine that plays an important role in the recruitment of monocytes to M. tuberculosis infection sites, and previous studies have reported that genetic variants in MCP1 are associated with differential susceptibility to pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB). We examined eight MCP1 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in a multi-ethnic, case-control design that included: 321 cases and 346 controls from Guinea-Bissau, 258 cases and 271 controls from The Gambia, 295 cases and 179 controls from the U.S. (African-Americans), and an additional set of 237 cases and 144 controls of European ancestry from the U.S. and Argentina. Two locus interactions were also examined for polymorphisms in MCP1 and interleukin 12B (IL12B), another gene implicated in PTB risk. Examination of previously associated MCP1 SNPs rs1024611 (−2581A/G), rs2857656 (−362G/C) and rs4586 (+900C/T) did not show evidence for association. One interaction between rs2857656 and IL12B SNP rs2288831 was observed among Africans but the effect was in the opposite direction in Guineans (OR = 1.90, p = 0.001) and Gambians (OR = 0.64, p = 0.024). Our data indicate that the effect of genetic variation within MCP1 is not clear cut and additional studies will be needed to elucidate its role in TB susceptibility

    Beyond technology: A research agenda for social sciences and humanities research on renewable energy in Europe

    This article enriches the existing literature on the importance and role of the social sciences and humanities (SSH) in renewable energy sources research by providing a novel approach to instigating the future research agenda in this field. Employing a series of in-depth interviews, deliberative focus group workshops and a systematic horizon scanning process, which utilised the expert knowledge of 85 researchers from the field with diverse disciplinary backgrounds and expertise, the paper develops a set of 100 priority questions for future research within SSH scholarship on renewable energy sources. These questions were aggregated into four main directions: (i) deep transformations and connections to the broader economic system (i.e. radical ways of (re)arranging socio-technical, political and economic relations), (ii) cultural and geographical diversity (i.e. contextual cultural, historical, political and socio-economic factors influencing citizen support for energy transitions), (iii) complexifying energy governance (i.e. understanding energy systems from a systems dynamics perspective) and (iv) shifting from instrumental acceptance to value-based objectives (i.e. public support for energy transitions as a normative notion linked to trust-building and citizen engagement). While this agenda is not intended to be—and cannot be—exhaustive or exclusive, we argue that it advances the understanding of SSH research on renewable energy sources and may have important value in the prioritisation of SSH themes needed to enrich dialogues between policymakers, funding institutions and researchers.     Virulence of 32 Salmonella Strains in Mice

    Virulence and persistence in the BALB/c mouse gut was tested for 32 strains of Salmonella enterica for which genome sequencing is complete or underway, including 17 serovars within subspecies I (enterica), and two representatives of each of the other five subspecies. Only serovar Paratyphi C strain BAA1715 and serovar Typhimurium strain 14028 were fully virulent in mice. Three divergent atypical Enteritidis strains were not virulent in BALB/c, but two efficiently persisted. Most of the other strains in all six subspecies persisted in the mouse intestinal tract for several weeks in multiple repeat experiments although the frequency and level of persistence varied considerably. Strains with heavily degraded genomes persisted very poorly, if at all. None of the strains tested provided immunity to Typhimurium infection. These data greatly expand on the known significant strain-to-strain variation in mouse virulence and highlight the need for comparative genomic and phenotypic studies
