Dirac zero-modes in compact U(1) gauge theory
We study properties of the zero and near-zero eigenmodes of the overlap Dirac
operator in compact U(1) gauge theory. In the confinement phase the exact
zero-modes are localized as found by studying the values of the inverse
participation ratio and other features. Non-zero-eigenmodes are less localized
in the confinement phase. In the Coulomb phase no zero-modes are observed and

Spread of retailer food quality standards: an international perspective
Privately initiated food quality standards are currently important elements in the marketing of food and agricultural products. At the same time, they stand in the centre of a discussion about potential negative effects on small farmers and farmers in developing countries. This study aims at analysing the adoption of two private food standards, BRC Technical Food Standard and GlobalGAP, at an aggregated crosscountry level. The results of the econometric analysis reveal some (potential) barriers for developing countries to access this type of organisational innovation. Certificates seem to be issued more probably in larger and wealthier countries, countries with a better institutional quality, better infrastructural conditions and in former UK colonies
Effectively Solving NP-SPEC Encodings by Translation to ASP
NP-SPEC is a language for specifying problems in NP in a declarative way. Despite the fact that the semantics of the language was given by referring to Datalog with circumscription, which is very close to ASP, so far the only existing implementations are by means of ECLiPSe Prolog and via Boolean satisfiability solvers. In this paper, we present translations from NP-SPEC into ASP, and provide an experimental evaluation of existing implementations and the proposed translations to ASP using various ASP solvers. The results show that translating to ASP clearly has an edge over the existing translation into SAT, which involves an intrinsic grounding process. We also argue that it might be useful to incorporate certain language constructs of NPSPEC into mainstream ASP
Initial Condition for QGP Evolution from NEXUS
We recently proposed a new approach to high energy nuclear scattering, which
treats the initial stage of heavy ion collisions in a sophisticated way.
We are able to calculate macroscopic quantities like energy density and
velocity flow at the end of this initial stage, after the two nuclei having
penetrated each other.
In other words, we provide the initial conditions for a macroscopic treatment
of the second stage of the collision.
We address in particular the question of how to incorporate the soft
component properly. We find almost perfect "Bjorken scaling": the rapidity
coincides with the space-time rapidity, whereas the transverse flow is
practically zero. The distribution of the energy density in the transverse
plane shows typically a very "bumpy" structure.Comment: 17 pages, 24 figure
How to Track Protists in Three Dimensions
We present an apparatus optimized for tracking swimming microorganisms in the
size range 10-1000 microns, in three dimensions (3D), far from surfaces, and
with negligible background convective fluid motion. CCD cameras attached to two
long working distance microscopes synchronously image the sample from two
perpendicular directions, with narrowband dark-field or bright-field
illumination chosen to avoid triggering a phototactic response. The images from
the two cameras can be combined to yield 3D tracks of the organism. Using
additional, highly directional broad-spectrum illumination with millisecond
timing control the phototactic trajectories in 3D of organisms ranging from
Chlamydomonas to Volvox can be studied in detail. Surface-mediated hydrodynamic
interactions can also be investigated without convective interference. Minimal
modifications to the apparatus allow for studies of chemotaxis and other taxes.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure
Direct measurement of the flow field around swimming microorganisms
Swimming microorganisms create flows that influence their mutual interactions
and modify the rheology of their suspensions. While extensively studied
theoretically, these flows have not been measured in detail around any
freely-swimming microorganism. We report such measurements for the microphytes
Volvox carteri and Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. The minute ~0.3% density excess
of V. carteri over water leads to a strongly dominant Stokeslet contribution,
with the widely-assumed stresslet flow only a correction to the subleading
source dipole term. This implies that suspensions of V. carteri have features
similar to suspensions of sedimenting particles. The flow in the region around
C. reinhardtii where significant hydrodynamic interaction is likely to occur
differs qualitatively from a "puller" stresslet, and can be described by a

Urban agriculture and Anopheles habitats in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
A cross-sectional survey of agricultural areas, combined with routinely monitored mosquito larval information, was conducted in urban Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, to investigate how agricultural and geographical features may influence the presence of Anopheles larvae. Data were integrated into a geographical information systems framework, and predictors of the presence of Anopheles larvae in farming areas were assessed using multivariate logistic regression with independent random effects. It was found that more than 5% of the study area (total size 16.8 km2) was used for farming in backyard gardens and larger open spaces. The proportion of habitats containing Anopheles larvae was 1.7 times higher in agricultural areas compared to other areas (95% confidence interval = 1.56-1.92). Significant geographic predictors of the presence of Anopheles larvae in gardens included location in lowland areas, proximity to river, and relatively impermeable soils. Agriculture-related predictors comprised specific seedbed types, mid-sized gardens, irrigation by wells, as well as cultivation of sugar cane or leafy vegetables. Negative predictors included small garden size, irrigation by tap water, rainfed production and cultivation of leguminous crops or fruit trees. Although there was an increased chance of finding Anopheles larvae in agricultural sites, it was found that breeding sites originated by urban agriculture account for less than a fifth of all breeding sites of malaria vectors in Dar es Salaam. It is suggested that strategies comprising an integrated malaria control effort in malaria-endemic African cities include participatory involvement of farmers by planting shade trees near larval habitats
Impact of Uncertainties in Hadron Production on Air-Shower Predictions
At high energy, cosmic rays can only be studied by measuring the extensive
air showers they produce in the atmosphere of the Earth. Although the main
features of air showers can be understood within a simple model of successive
interactions, detailed simulations and a realistic description of particle
production are needed to calculate observables relevant to air shower
experiments. Currently hadronic interaction models are the main source of
uncertainty of such simulations. We will study the effect of using different
hadronic models available in CORSIKA and CONEX on extensive air shower
