    A Solar and Galactic Cosmic Ray Satellite Experiment

    A cosmic ray instrument for NASA's OGO-F spacecraft is described. The experiment consists of three charged particle detector systems which are designed to measure the spectra and chemical composition of galactic and solar cosmic rays over selected energy intervals. Two of the detector systems, the ¿E-Range and ¿E-¿erenkov telescopes, will measure the galactic flux and smaller solar flare fluxes, while a third detector system, the Flare telescope, will measure larger fluxes The three telescopes identify particle energy and type by various techniques. Energy loss and range, which provide the identification of protons (1 to 300 MeV), alpha particles (4 to 1200 MeV) and electrons (1 to 500 MeV), are measured in a stack of silicon solid state detectors and tungsten absorbers in the ¿E-Range telescope, while the identification of protons (350 to 1000 MeV), alpha particles (1400 to 4000 MeV) an, nuclei through oxygen is provided in the ¿E-¿erenkov telescope by energy loss measurements in silicon solid state detectors and a velocity measurement in a quartz & ¿erenkov radiator. The Flare telescope employs a double energy loss measurement in silicon detectors for the identification of protons (17 to 100 MeV) and alpha particles (70 to 400 MeV). The design of the instrument is optimized for maximum use of the available data rate with minimum weight, volume and power requirements

    Simply Summary: Real-time ultrasonography (RTU) has become an essential diagnostic value when assessing female swine reproduction in either individual or groups of animals. Diagnostic application of RTU is applied throughout most stages of production, including gilt development, breeding, gestation and farrowing. Along with its most common use in on-farm assessment of pregnancy status, RTU is also used to troubleshoot disruptions in reproductive performance such as delayed puberty, prolonged wean-to-estrus interval, absence of post-weaning estrus, decreased conception and farrowing rates, vulval discharge, peripartum and puerperal disorders. This review aims to provide an overview on principles and clinical uses of RTU in female reproduction on commercial swine farms. When using RTU for pregnancy determination, diagnosis is based upon a combination of the animal's breeding records, the presence of embryonic fluid, and, depending upon gestational stage, fetal structures. If RTU is used as a diagnostic tool in assessing reproductive problems in an individual or a group of animals, sonographic evaluation of both the uterus and ovaries is performed. Tissues are delineated and assessed based upon their echogenicity, echotexture, and size. Uses of RTU in clinical practice may include assessment of delayed puberty, prolonged wean-to-estrus interval, absence of post-weaning estrus, herd disruptions in conception and farrowing rates, vulval discharge, peripartum and puerperal disorders.     A balloon-borne imaging gamma-ray telescope

    A balloon-borne coded-aperture gamma-ray telescope for galactic and extragalactic astronomy observations is described. The instrument, called Gamma Ray Imaging Payload (GRIP), is designed for measurements in the energy range from 30 keV to 5 MeV with an angular resolution of 0.6 deg over a 20 deg field of view. Distinguishing characteristics of the telescope are a rotating hexagonal coded-aperture mask and a thick NaI scintillation camera.     Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium (S. typhimuriwn) is one of the leading causes of food poisoning in man (4) and consumption of pork products is a major risk factor for disease (3, 5). A major outbreak of salmonellosis in Denmark caused by S. enterica and associated with the consumption of pork has stimulated renewed interest in Salmonella and food safety by pork producers, consumers, and the government (II). A combination of many factors has prompted the United States Department of Agriculture to place S. enterica at the top of its priority list of food borne pathogens (7). In Denmark. S. typhimurium is the most common serotype isolated from pigs (78.2 %) and is the second most common cause of food borne salmonellosis in humans (27.8 %) (I, II).
