Shape optimization of a showerhead system for the control of growth uniformity in a MOCVD reactor using CFD-based evolutionary algorithms
A steady state, laminar flow coupled with heat transfer, gas-phase and surface chemistry, is numerically solved for the optimal design of a showerhead gas delivery system in an axis-symmetrical MOCVD reactor. The design method involves an evolutionary algorithm based on CFD simulations. A finite-volume CFD code for aluminum growth provides the numerical predictions of the growth rate and its spatial variation over the substrate. A multilevel evolutionary algorithm is used to continuously adjust the shape of the shower plate so as to minimize the spatial variation of the growth rate. A 5-variable parameterization of the shower plate is investigated and a near-optimal solution is proposed and compared to the original configuration of the shower plate
Synthesis, crystal structure and spectroscopic characterization of a new organic bismuthate (III) [C9H28N4][Bi2Cl10].H2O
The chemical preparation, crystal structure and spectroscopic characterization of [C9H28N4][Bi2Cl10].H2O have been reported. This compound crystallizes in the monoclinic system in space group P21/c and cell parameters a = 12.2385 (6), b = 17.3062 (7), c = 13.0772 (6) Å, β = 104.475 (5)°, Z = 4 and V = 2681.9 (2) Å3. Its crystal structure has been determined and refined to R = 0.049, using 5848 independent reflections. The atomic arrangement can be described by an alternation of organic and inorganic layers. The inorganic layer built up of [Bi2Cl10]4– bioctahedra arranged in sandwich between the organic layer. The organic groups are interconnected by the water molecules through N-H…O(W) hydrogen bonds to form infinite zig-zag chains spreading along the b-axis. These Chains are themselves interconnected by means of the N–H…Cl hydrogen bonds originating from [Bi2Cl10]4– anions, to form a three-dimensional network. Intermolecular Cl…Cl interactions between adjacent dimeric [Bi2Cl10]4– anions have been observed. The compound was also characterized by FT-IR and Raman spectrscopies
Germination and growth in control and primed seeds of pepper as affected by salt stress
Salinity is an important
abiotic stress which can affect crop
production in the world. One of the simplest
methods for improving salinity tolerance of
plants is seeds priming. This experiment
was conducted to evaluate the effects of
seeds priming with three solutions (KCl ,
NaCl and CaCl2) in germination and later
growth of three pepper (Capsicum annuum
L.) cultivars: Beldi, Baklouti and Anaheim
Chili. Seeds germination was conducted in a
completely randomized design under seven
salinity levels (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 g L-1)
at room temperature for primed and control
seeds. Plants derived from these germinated
seeds (control and primed) were
transplanted and cultivated in a greenhouse
for 4 months and were irrigated permanently
with seven salinity levels (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10
and 12 g L-1). The results showed that
salinity affected all parameters under study
like total germination percentage and
chlorophyll level (a and b). As well, proline
content increased as response to increasing
salinity. The plants derived and grown from
primed seeds showed a considerable
tolerance to salt stress and gave better
results. In fact, priming improved the salt
resistance of pepper owing to more
chlorophyll and proline accumulation.
These results suggest that seed priming
induced possible physiological adjustments
in pepper seeds, especially in the early
stages of development, and could be used as
a suitable tool for improving germination
and growth characteristics under salt stress
conditions
Reliability and Validity of a New Taekwondo-Specific Change-of-Direction Speed Test With Striking Techniques in Elite Taekwondo Athletes:A Pilot Study
International audienceThe purpose of this study was to examine the test-retest reliability, and convergent and discriminative validity of a new taekwondo-specific change-of-direction (COD) speed test with striking techniques (TST) in elite taekwondo athletes. Twenty (10 males and 10 females) elite (athletes who compete at national level) and top-elite (athletes who compete at national and international level) taekwondo athletes with an average training background of 8.9 +/- 1.3 years of systematic taekwondo training participated in this study. During the two-week test-retest period, various generic performance tests measuring COD speed, balance, speed, and jump performance were carried out during the first week and as a retest during the second week. Three TST trials were conducted with each athlete and the best trial was used for further analyses. The relevant performance measure derived from the TST was the time with striking penalty (TST-TSP). TST-TSP performances amounted to 10.57 +/- 1.08 s for males and 11.74 +/- 1.34 s for females. The reliability analysis of the TST performance was conducted after logarithmic transformation, in order to address the problem of heteroscedasticity. In both groups, the TST demonstrated a high relative test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficients and 90% compatibility limits were 0.80 and 0.47 to 0.93, respectively). For absolute reliability, the TST's typical error of measurement (TEM), 90% compatibility limits, and magnitudes were 4.6%, 3.4 to 7.7, for males, and 5.4%, 3.9 to 9.0, for females. The homogeneous sample of taekwondo athletes meant that the TST's TEM exceeded the usual smallest important change (SIC) with 0.2 effect size in the two groups. The new test showed mostly very large correlations with linear sprint speed (r = 0.71 to 0.85) and dynamic balance (r = -0.71 and -0.74), large correlations with COD speed (r = 0.57 to 0.60) and vertical jump performance (r = -0.50 to -0.65), and moderate correlations with horizontal jump performance (r = -0.34 to -0.45) and static balance (r = -0.39 to -0.44). Top-elite athletes showed better TST performances than elite counterparts. Receiver operating characteristic analysis indicated that the TST effectively discriminated between top-elite and elite taekwondo athletes. In conclusion, the TST is a valid, and sensitive test to evaluate the COD speed with taekwondo specific skills, and reliable when considering ICC and TEM. Although the usefulness of the TST is questioned to detect small performance changes in the present population, the TST can detect moderate changes in taekwondo-specific COD speed

Can gold be used as a hedge against the risks of Sharia-compliant securities? Application for Islamic portfolio management
In this paper, we investigate whether gold hedges Sharia-compliant stocks and Sukuk during the period from September 2005 to October 2017. The inference is taken by using both the DCC-GARCH model and the wavelet coherence analysis. On the whole, our finding suggests that gold is not effective in hedging the fluctuations of Sharia-compliant securities. However, we find that combining gold with stocks (and Sukuk) is useful in diversification and portfolio optimization. These results imply that, while gold is an excellent hedge for plain vanilla securities, it is not for Islamic exposures. This is important in light of the increasing amount of assets that are managed according to Islamic screening
Mycobacterium tuberculosis monoarthritis in a child
A child with isolated Mycobacterium tuberculosis monoarthritis, with features initially suggesting oligoarthritis subtype of juvenile idiopathic arthritis, is presented. This patient illustrates the need to consider the possibility of tuberculosis as the cause of oligoarthritis in high-risk pediatric populations even in the absence of a tuberculosis contact history and without evidence of overt pulmonary disease
Screening of winery and olive mill wastes for lignocellulolytic enzyme production from Aspergillus species by solid-state fermentation
Wastes from olive oil and wine industries (as exhausted grape marc, vineshoot trimmings, two-phase olive mill waste, vinasses, and olive mill wastewater) were evaluated for lignocellulolytic enzyme production (as endocellulases, endoxylanases, and feruloyl esterases) by solid-state fermentation (SSF) with Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus ibericus, and Aspergillus uvarum. To study the effect of different solid medium composition and time in enzyme production, a PlackettBurman experimental design was used. Variables that had a higher positive effect in lignocellulolytic enzyme production were urea, time, and exhausted grape marc. The maximum values of enzymatic activity per unit of substrate dry mass were found with A. niger for feruloyl esterase. Enzymatic extracts from SSF with A. niger achieved maximum feruloyl esterase activity (89.53 U/g) and endoxylanase activity (3.06 U/g) and with A. uvarum for endocellulase activity (6.77 U/g). The enzyme cocktails obtained in the SSF extracts may have applications in biorefinery industries.Jose Manuel Salgado is grateful for the postdoctoral fellowship (EX-2010-0402) of the Education Ministry of Spanish Government. Oil prices and stock returns : nonlinear links across sectors
We present evidence of an asymmetric relationship between oil prices and stock returns. The two regime multivariate Markov switching vector autoregressive (MSVAR) model allow us to capture the state shifts in the relationship between regional stock markets and sectors. Results suggest that oil price risk is significantly priced in the sample used. The impact is asymmetric with respect to market phases, and regimes have been associated with world economic, social and political events. Our study also suggests asymmetric responses of sector stock returns to oil price changes and different transmission impacts depending on the sector analyzed. There is a high causality from oil to sectors like Industrials and Oil & Gas. Companies inside the Utilities sector were more able to hedge against oil price increases between 2007 and 2012. Historical crisis events between 1992–1998 and 2003–2007 do not seem to have affected the relationship between oil and sector stock returns, given the higher probability of remaining smoother. For all sectors there seems to be a turn back to stability from 2012 onwards. Finally, investors gain more through portfolio diversification benefits built across, rather than within sectors.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
