This paper focuses on the historic connections between tourist promotion as a factor for both capital attraction and competitiveness and its influence on the urban configuration of Barcelona. Today, tourism represents a strategic value in the urban organisation of Barcelona and constitutes an excuse for the design, management and planning of the city, but the genealogy of this process has not been considered. In analysing this origin, the paper emphasises the validity of the strategies that were used at the beginning of the 20th century and makes a parallelism with the current promotion of the city. The tourist construction of Barcelona originated in the framework of the bourgeois ideology, which placed aesthetic and cultural values as a core idea of its discourse. Both the urban reconfiguration and the monumental construction of Barcelona were a prerequisite and a consequence of this promotion.
The production of Antique Monuments in the age of mass tourism
At the end of the nineteenth century modern tourism was beginning its development in cities where historic buildings had been preserved so far. This prompted the consciousness, both in Europe and the USA, on the possibility to artificially produce those features of the antiquity attractive for visitors and on the fact that tourists were equally pleased albeit knowing they were visiting copies or reproductions. This paper aims to study the particular history of the modern creation of ancient monuments as a sort of urban promotion, analyzing the bases of its origins and providing some examples of rebuilt monuments in western society from the end of the nineteenth century to 1970.Universidad de Granada. Transnational gentrification, tourism and the formation of 'foreign only' enclaves in Barcelona
In a context of global-scale inequalities and increased middle-class transnational mobility, this paper explores how the arrival of Western European and North American migrants in Barcelona drives a process of gentrification that coexists and overlaps with the development of tourism in the city. Research has focused increasingly on the role of visitors and Airbnb in driving gentrification. However, our aim is to add another layer to the complexity of neighbourhood change in tourist cities by considering the role of migrants from advanced economies as gentrifiers in these neighbourhoods. We combined socio-demographic analysis with in-depth interviews and, from this, we found that: (1) lifestyle opportunities, rather than work, explain why transnational migrants are attracted to Barcelona, resulting in privileged consumers of housing that then displace long-term residents; (2) migrants have become spatially concentrated in tourist enclaves and interact predominantly with other transnational mobile populations; (3) the result is that centrally located neighbourhoods are appropriated by foreigners - both visitors and migrants - who are better positioned in the unequal division of labour, causing locals to feel increasingly excluded from the place. We illustrate that tourism and transnational gentrification spatially coexist and, accordingly, we provide an analysis that integrates both processes to understand how neighbourhood change occurs in areas impacted by tourism. By doing so, the paper offers a fresh reading of how gentrification takes place in a Southern European destination and, furthermore, it provides new insights into the conceptualisation of tourism and lifestyle migration as drivers of gentrification

At the end of the nineteenth century modern tourism was beginning its development in cities where historic buildings had been preserved so far. The Barcelona Gothic Quarter. From national symbol to theme park.
The Barcelona Gothic Quarter was built in the twentieth century. The beginning of the monumentalisation of the historic city was a local bourgeoisie project to promote national Catalan architecture, but the redevelopment was self-financing from increased income generated from urban tourism with its appreciation of buildings with an ancient appearance, irrespective of whether they are original. This article analyses the political use of the past and its subsequent commoditisation alongside city marketing, whose aim is to create a distinctive brand for the city in the international tourism market so that it successfully competes for tourism and inward investment
