    The sabellid polychaete Sabellastarte spectabilis is common in bays and harbours throughout Hawaii. It has become one of the most harvested marine ornamental species in the State. Collection can be difficult and potentially damaging to the reef community. Understanding the reproduction and life history of this polychaete will benefit the marine ornamental trade by facilitating aquaculture of the species and coral reef conservation by decreasing destructive collecting practices. There is very little known about the biology of this species. Experiments were conducted at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology to induce and document spawning and larval development. Oocytes range between 150-200 µm in diameter and sperm have spherical heads. Cell division in fertilized eggs begins approximately twenty minutes after spawning. Developmental stages were documented using light and scanning electron microscopy. Swimming larvae are first seen 7-8 h after spawning. Larvae have a well-developed prototroch and a less conspicuous neurotroch and metatroch. Two chaetigers develop sequentially on days 4 and 5 and settlement occurs 6-7 days after spawning. Metamorphosis occurs gradually from days 6-8. This is the first reported induction of spawning and description of larval development from fertilized egg to settlement and metamorphosis for this species.El poliqueto sabélido Sabellastarte spectabilis es común en bahías y puertos de Hawaii. Este sabélido ha llegado a ser una de las especies ornamentales marinas más recolectadas en el estado, pero su recolección es difícil y en muchos casos ocasiona daño a la comunidad arrecifal. Pese a ello, el conocimiento sobre su biología es escaso. El estudio de la reproducción y ciclo de vida de estos sabélidos facilitará su cultivo y beneficiará al mercado de especies ornamentales, a la vez que la diminución de la recogida destructiva se espera pueda contribuir a la conservación de los arrecifes coralinos. En el Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology se realizaron algunos experimentos con la finalidad de inducir y documentar su reproducción y desarrollo larvario. Los huevos miden entre 150-200 μm de diámetro y los espermatozoos presentan cabezas redondas. La división celular de huevos fertilizados comienza aproximadamente 20 minutos después del desove. Los estadios larvarios se documentaron con microscopios de luz y microscopia electrónico de barrido. Las primeras larvas aparecen 7-8 horas después del desove. Las larvas tienen una prototroca muy bien desarrollada y una neurotroca y metatroca menos conspicua. Entre los días 4 y 5 se desarrollan dos setígeros y el reclutamiento ocurrió 6-7 días después del desove. La metamorfosis ocurre gradualmente entre los días 6-8. Este estudio describe por primera vez la inducción del desove y la descripción del desarrollo larvario desde la fertilización del huevo hasta el establecimiento y metamorfosis de la especie. &nbsp

    Autonomous Vehicles Operating Collaboratively to Avoid Debris and Obstructions

    The purpose of this project is to demonstrate the safety and increased fuel efficiency of an automated collision avoidance system in collaborative vehicle platooning. This project was cosponsored by Daimler Trucks North America headquartered in Portland, Oregon, as well as Dr. Birdsong, and Dr. DeBruhl of Cal Poly. The mechanical engineering team consists of Cole Oppenheim, James Gildart, Toan Le, and Kyle Bybee who worked in coordination with a team of computer engineers. Vehicle platooning is a driving technique to increase the fuel efficiency of a group of vehicles by following a lead vehicle closely to reduce the drag experienced by the group. Specifically, large tractor trailer trucks could become more efficient utilizing vehicle platooning. To implement this system most effectively would require an automatic system for collision avoidance. The goal for the mechanical engineering team working on this project was build and design two scale model vehicles, a test track, and dynamic models of the vehicles. These were then interface with computer vision software and hardware (created in collaboration of a team of computer engineers) that allows the vehicles to autonomously platoon and avoid objects that would otherwise cause a collision. Interactions with the computer engineering team occurred at minimum on a weekly basis and more whenever necessary. Interactions between the team’s original occurred as meetings to determine each team individual progress until integration could be accomplished. When the systems were being integrated, meetings occurred regularly (2-3 times a week) to ensure the vehicles could properly execute their design function. The goal of this project is to demonstrate how this system could be implemented in truck platooning safely and to demonstrate the advantages of platooning with system developed. This project was intended and will be presented to compete at the Enhanced Safety of Vehicles conference in the Netherlands in June of 2019. This report covers the scope of work of this project, the preliminary design direction, and the final design direction, and the final design for the assembly of the two 1/10 scale cars, the track design, and the controls strategy to interface with the CPE’s software

    A Hard Constraint Algorithm to Model Particle Interactions in DNA-laden Flows

    We present a new method for particle interactions in polymer models of DNA. The DNA is represented by a bead-rod polymer model and is fully-coupled to the fluid. The main objective in this work is to implement short-range forces to properly model polymer-polymer and polymer-surface interactions, specifically, rod-rod and rod-surface uncrossing. Our new method is based on a rigid constraint algorithm whereby rods elastically bounce off one another to prevent crossing, similar to our previous algorithm used to model polymer-surface interactions. We compare this model to a classical (smooth) potential which acts as a repulsive force between rods, and rods and surfaces

    Putting underspecification in context: ERP evidence for sparse representations in morphophonological alternations

    Numerous studies have shown evidence for a sparse lexicon in speech perception, often in the guise of underspecification, where certain information is omitted in the specification of phonological forms. While previous work has made a good case for underspecifying certain features of single speech sounds, the role of phonological context in underspecification has been overlooked. Contextually-mediated underspecification is particularly relevant to conceptualizations of the lexicon, as it is couched in item-specific (as opposed to phoneme-specific) patterning.     Relation of delayed recovery of myocardial function after takotsubo cardiomyopathy to subsequent quality of life

    Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TTC) has generally been regarded as a relatively transient disorder, characterized by reversible regional left ventricular systolic dysfunction. However, most patients with TTC experience prolonged lassitude or dyspnea after acute attacks. Although this might reflect continued emotional stress, myocardial inflammation and accentuated brain-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) release persist for at least 3 months. We therefore tested the hypotheses that this continued inflammation is associated with (1) persistent contractile dysfunction and (2) consequent impairment of quality of life. Echocardiographic parameters (global longitudinal strain [GLS], longitudinal strain rate [LSR], and peak apical twist [AT]) were compared acutely and after 3 months in 36 female patients with TTC and 19 age-matched female controls. Furthermore, correlations were sought between putative functional anomalies, inflammatory markers (T2 score on cardiovascular magnetic resonance, plasma NT-proBNP, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein levels), and the physical composite component of SF36 score (SF36-PCS). In TTC cases, left ventricular ejection fraction returned to normal within 3 months. GLS, LSR, and AT improved significantly over 3-month recovery, but GLS remained reduced compared to controls even at follow-up (-17.9 ± 3.1% vs -20.0 ± 1.8%, p = 0.003). Impaired GLS at 3 months was associated with both persistent NT-proBNP elevation (p = 0.03) and reduced SF36-PCS at ≥3 months (p = 0.04). In conclusion, despite normalization of left ventricular ejection fraction, GLS remains impaired for at least 3 months, possibly as a result of residual myocardial inflammation. Furthermore, perception of impaired physical exercise capacity ≥3 months after TTC may be explained by persistent myocardial dysfunction

    Apical ballooning syndrome complicated by acute severe mitral regurgitation with left ventricular outflow obstruction – Case report

    BACKGROUND: Apical ballooning syndrome (or Takotsubo cardiomyopathy) is a syndrome of transient left ventricular apical ballooning. Although first described in Japanese patients, it is now well reported in the Caucasian population. The syndrome mimicks an acute myocardial infarction but is characterised by the absence of obstructive coronary disease. We describe a serious and poorly understood complication of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 65 year-old lady referred to us from a rural hospital where she was treated with thrombolytic therapy for a presumed acute anterior myocardial infarction. Four hours after thrombolysis she developed acute pulmonary oedema and a new systolic murmur. It was presumed she had acute mitral regurgitation secondary to a ruptured papillary muscle, ischaemic dysfunction or an acute ventricular septal defect. Echocardiogram revealed severe mitral regurgitation, left ventricular apical ballooning, and systolic anterior motion of the mitral valve with significant left ventricular outflow tract gradient (60–70 mmHg). Coronary angiography revealed no obstructive coronary lesions. She had an intra-aortic balloon pump inserted with no improvement in her parlous haemodynamic state. We elected to replace her mitral valve to correct the outflow tract gradient and mitral regurgitation. Intra-operatively the mitral valve was mildly myxomatous but there were no structural abnormalities. She had a mechanical mitral valve replacement with a 29 mm St Jude valve. Post-operatively, her left ventricular outflow obstruction resolved and ventricular function returned to normal over the subsequent 10 days. She recovered well. CONCLUSION: This case represents a serious and poorly understood association of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy with acute pulmonary oedema, severe mitral regurgitaton and systolic anterior motion of the mitral valve with significant left ventricular outflow tract obstruction. The sequence of our patient's presentation suggests that the apical ballooning caused geometric alterations in her left ventricle that in turn led to acute and severe mitral regurgitation, systolic anterior motion of the mitral valve and left ventricular outflow tract obstruction. The left ventricular outflow tract obstruction and mitral regurgitation were corrected by mechanical mitral valve replacement. We describe a variant of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy with acute mitral regurgitation, systolic anterior motion of the mitral valve leaflet and left ventricular outflow tract obstruction of a dynamic nature
