    Improving Working Memory: Evaluation report and executive summary

    This project tested the Improving Working Memory intervention (WM) and an adapted version, entitled the Working Memory Plus intervention (WM+). Working memory is the ability to remember and manipulate information over short time-frames. Previous research has suggested that working memory is a reliable predictor of numeracy outcomes. The Improving Working Memory intervention aimed to improve the numeracy skills of Year 3 pupils (aged 7-8) who were behind the class average in numeracy by improving their working memory capacity. The intervention, developed and previously tested by a team at Oxford University, combined the explicit teaching of working memory strategies by Teaching Assistants (TAs) and the independent practice of these strategies using web-based games. The intervention was delivered in ten one-hour sessions and lasted for one term. The Working Memory Plus intervention also had ten sessions, but only five were focused on working memory, whilst the other five were focused on arithmetic content. The project was a randomised controlled trial (RCT). 127 schools participated, being randomised at the school-level to one of three arms – the Improving Working Memory intervention, the Working Memory Plus intervention, or a business as usual control group. The primary outcome was maths attainment and the project also looked at working memory, and attention and behaviour in class as secondary outcomes. The process evaluation included fieldwork with eight intervention schools (four from each intervention), and an online survey of treatment and control schools.     Common decisions made and actions taken during small-animal consultations at eight first-opinion practices in the United Kingdom

    In order for veterinary surgeons to undertake an evidence-based approach to making decisions about theirpatients, it is important that new evidence is generated to support the clinical decision-making process.Many of the decisions are likely to be around the actions taken to treat or manage health problemsdiscussed during the consultation, and little is currently known about the factors which affect the typeof action taken. The aim of this study was to determine the decisions made and actions taken for healthproblems discussed during first-opinion small-animal consultations, as well as identifying factors whichmay affect the decision-making process.Data were gathered during direct observation of small-animal consultations conducted by 62 veterinarysurgeons in eight first-opinion practices in the United Kingdom. For each patient presented, data weregathered on all health problems discussed during the consultation. The decision made (whether an actionwas taken or not) and the action taken where applicable (e.g. therapeutic treatment with antibiotics) wasalso recorded. A three-level multivariable logistic-regression model was developed, with problem (Level1) nested within patient (Level 2) nested within consulting veterinary surgeon (Level 3), and a binaryoutcome variable of action versus no action.At least one action was taken for 69% (n = 2203/3192) of all problems discussed. Therapeutic treatmentwas the most common action taken (n = 1286/3192 problems; 40.3%), followed by management advice(n = 1040/3192; 32.6%) and diagnostic work-up (n = 323/3192; 10.1%). The most common therapeutictreatment was antibiotics (n = 386/1286; 30%), while the most common management advice given wasdietary advice (n = 509/1040; 48.9%). The three explanatory variables remaining in the final model werewhether the problem was a presenting or non-presenting problem, the type of diagnosis made, andthe body system affected. Explanatory variables which did not remain in the final model were patientsignalment, problem history, consultation type, clinical examination type, and who raised the problem(veterinary surgeon or owner).For over two-thirds of problems discussed, an action was taken which suggests these problems maybe seen as important by the veterinary surgeon and/or pet owner. No action was taken for almost a thirdof cases which could represent ‘watchful waiting’, which has been highlighted as important in humanhealthcare. Future research should focus on the common actions taken, further exploring the complexdecision-making process, and examining the effect of the decisions made on long-term patient outcomes

    Electrochemical Oxidation and Sensing of Methylamine Gas in Room Temperature Ionic Liquids

    The electrochemical behaviour of methylamine gas in several room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs), [C2mim][NTf2], [C4mim][NTf2], [C6mim][FAP], [C4mpyrr][NTf2], [C4mim][BF4], and [C4mim][PF6] has been investigated on a Pt microelectrode using cyclic voltammetry. A broad oxidation wave at approximately 3 V, two reduction peaks and another oxidation peak was observed. A complicated mechanism is predicted based on the voltammetry obtained, with ammonia gas as a likely by-product. The currents obtained suggest that methylamine has a high solubility in RTILs, which is important for gas sensing applications. The analytical utility of methylamine was then studied in [C4mpyrr][NTf2] and [C2mim][NTf2]. A linear calibration graph with an R2 value of 0.99 and limits of detection of 33 and 34 ppm were obtained respectively, suggesting that RTILs are favourable non-volatile solvents for the electrochemical detection of highly toxic methylamine gas

    Electrochemical determination of hydroquinone using hydrophobic ionic liquid-type carbon paste electrodes

    Three types of carbon paste electrodes (CPEs) with different liquid binders were fabricated, and their electrochemical behavior was characterized via a potassium hexacyanoferrate(II) probe. 1-Octyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ionic liquid (IL) as a hydrophobic conductive pasting binder showed better electrochemical performance compared with the commonly employed binder. The IL-contained CPEs demonstrated excellent electroactivity for oxidation of hydroquinone. A diffusion control mechanism was confirmed and the diffusion coefficient (D) of 5.05 × 10-4 cm2 s-1 was obtained. The hydrophobic IL-CPE is promising for the determination of hydroquinone in terms of high sensitivity, easy operation, and good durability
