Baryon Decuplet to Octet Electromagnetic Transitions in Quenched and Partially Quenched Chiral Perturbation Theory
We calculate baryon decuplet to octet electromagnetic transition form factors
in quenched and partially quenched chiral perturbation theory. We work in the
isospin limit of SU(3) flavor, up to next-to-leading order in the chiral
expansion, and to leading order in the heavy baryon expansion. Our results are
necessary for proper extrapolation of lattice calculations of these
transitions. We also derive expressions for the case of SU(2) flavor away from

Two Nucleons on a Lattice
The two-nucleon sector is near an infrared fixed point of QCD and as a result
the S-wave scattering lengths are unnaturally large compared to the effective
ranges and shape parameters. It is usually assumed that a lattice QCD
simulation of the two-nucleon sector will require a lattice that is much larger
than the scattering lengths in order to extract quantitative information. In
this paper we point out that this does not have to be the case: lattice QCD
simulations on much smaller lattices will produce rigorous results for nuclear

How good is the quenched approximation of QCD?
The quenched approximation for QCD is, at present and in the foreseeable
future, unavoidable in lattice calculations with realistic choices of the
lattice spacing, volume and quark masses. In this talk, I review an analytic
study of the effects of quenching based on chiral perturbation theory. Quenched
chiral perturbation theory leads to quantitative insight on the difference
between quenched and unquenched QCD, and reveals clearly some of the diseases

The diversity and breadth of cancer cell fatty acid metabolism
Tumor cellular metabolism exhibits distinguishing features that collectively enhance biomass synthesis while maintaining redox balance and cellular homeostasis. These attributes reflect the complex interactions between cell-intrinsic factors such as genomic-transcriptomic regulation and cell-extrinsic influences, including growth factor and nutrient availability. Alongside glucose and amino acid metabolism, fatty acid metabolism supports tumorigenesis and disease progression through a range of processes including membrane biosynthesis, energy storage and production, and generation of signaling intermediates. Here, we highlight the complexity of cellular fatty acid metabolism in cancer, the various inputs and outputs of the intracellular free fatty acid pool, and the numerous ways that these pathways influence disease behavior.Shilpa R. Compton Scattering on the Deuteron in Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory
Compton scattering on the deuteron is studied in the framework of baryon
chiral perturbation theory to third order in small momenta, for photon energies
of order the pion mass. The scattering amplitude is a sum of one- and
two-nucleon mechanisms with no undetermined parameters. Our results are in good
agreement with existing experimental data, and a prediction is made for

âEngage the Worldâ: examining conflicts of engagement in public museums
Public engagement has become a central theme in the mission statements of many cultural institutions, and in scholarly research into museums and heritage. Engagement has emerged as the go-to-it-word for generating, improving or repairing relations between museums and society at large. But engagement is frequently an unexamined term that might embed assumptions and ignore power relationships. This article describes and examines the implications of conflicting and misleading uses of âengagementâ in relation to institutional dealings with contested questions about culture and heritage. It considers the development of an exhibition on the Dead Sea Scrolls by the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto in 2009 within the new institutional goal to âEngage the Worldâ. The chapter analyses the motivations, processes and decisions deployed by management and staff to âEngage the Worldâ, and the degree to which the museum was able to re-think its strategies of public engagement, especially in relation to subjects,issues and publics that were more controversial in nature
Chiral Analysis of Quenched Baryon Masses
We extend to quenched QCD an earlier investigation of the chiral structure of
the masses of the nucleon and the delta in lattice simulations of full QCD.
Even after including the meson-loop self-energies which give rise to the
leading and next-to-leading non-analytic behaviour (and hence the most rapid
variation in the region of light quark mass), we find surprisingly little
curvature in the quenched case. Replacing these meson-loop self-energies by the
corresponding terms in full QCD yields a remarkable level of agreement with the
results of the full QCD simulations. This comparison leads to a very good
understanding of the origins of the mass splitting between these baryons.Comment: 23 pages, 6 figure
Neutrino-Deuteron Scattering in Effective Field Theory at Next-to-Next-to Leading Order
We study the four channels associated with neutrino-deuteron breakup
reactions at next-to-next to leading order in effective field theory. We find
that the total cross-section is indeed converging for neutrino energies up to
20 MeV, and thus our calculations can provide constraints on theoretical
uncertainties for the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory. We stress the importance of
a direct experimental measurement to high precision in at least one channel, in

Low-energy couplings of QCD from current correlators near the chiral limit
We investigate a new numerical procedure to compute fermionic correlation
functions at very small quark masses. Large statistical fluctuations, due to
the presence of local ``bumps'' in the wave functions associated with the
low-lying eigenmodes of the Dirac operator, are reduced by an exact low-mode
averaging. To demonstrate the feasibility of the technique, we compute the
two-point correlator of the left-handed vector current with Neuberger fermions
in the quenched approximation, for lattices with a linear extent of L~1.5 fm, a
lattice spacing a~0.09 fm, and quark masses down to the epsilon-regime. By
matching the results with the corresponding (quenched) chiral perturbation
theory expressions, an estimate of (quenched) low-energy constants can be
obtained. We find agreement between the quenched values of F extrapolated from
the p-regime and extracted in the epsilon-regime.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figure
Transcranial magnetic stunning of broilers: a preliminary trial to induce unconsciousness
This study was performed to identify whether non-focal transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) with an adapted coil for broilers has the potential for use as a non-invasive stunning method for broilers. Application of the TMS probe resulted in dominance of theta and delta waves and appearance of spikes in the electroencephalogram (EEG) after stimulation. Correlation dimension (CD) analyses of the EEG signals recorded prior to and following the application of TMS suggested that the birds might be unconscious for approximately 15 to 20 s assuming that a reduction in CD to 60% of the baseline value indicates unconsciousness. Other observations included loss of behavioural arousal or muscle tone (muscle flaccidity), and irregular heart rate after TMS. It can be suggested that TMS has the potential to be developed as a stunning method in the future. The technique, evaluated using small number of broilers in this study, requires further improvement and the use of a power supply optimised in future research. Transcranial magnetic stimulation of the brain has potential for application as a non-invasive stunning method for broilers, which could be acceptable to some religious groups opposed to the use of established or conventional stunning methods
