    Theoretical Estimates of Stellar e-Captures. I. The half-life of 7Be in Evolved Stars

    The Li enrichment in the Universe still presents various puzzles to astrophysics. One open issue is that of obtaining estimates for the rate of e-captures on 7Be, for T and rho conditions different from solar. This is important to model the Galactic nucleosynthesis of Li. In this framework, we present a new theoretical method for calculating the e-capture rate in conditions typical of evolved stars. We show how our approach compares with state-of-the-art techniques for solar conditions, where various estimates are available. Our computations include: i) "traditional" calculations of the electronic density at the nucleus, to which the e-capture rate for 7Be is proportional, for different theoretical approaches including the Thomas--Fermi, Poisson--Boltzmann and Debye--Hueckel (DH) models of screening, ii) a new computation, based on a formalism that goes beyond the previous ones, adopting a mean-field "adiabatic" approximation to the scattering process. The results obtained with our approach as well as with the traditional ones and their differences are discussed in some detail, starting from solar conditions, where our method and the DH model converge to the same solution. We then analyze the applicability of the various models to a rather broad range of T and rho values, embracing those typical of red giant stars. We find that, over a wide region of the parameter space explored, the DH approximation does not stand, and the more general method we suggest is preferable. We then briefly reanalyze the 7Li abundances in RGB and AGB stars of the Galactic Disk using the new Be-decay rate. We also underline that the different values of the electron density at the nucleus we find should induce effects on electron screening (for p-captures on Li itself, as well as for other nuclei) so that our new approach might have wide astrophysical consequences.Comment: Astrophts.     Lithium abundances in AGB stars and a new estimate for the7Be life-time

    In most cases RGB and AGB stars with M <= 2M(circle dot) destroy Li (which is instead synthesized trough electron-captures on Be-7). This occurs through the combined operation of mixing processes and proton captures, when H-burning operates close to the envelope. Observed Li abundances are however difficult to explain, as they cover a wide spread. Various uncertainties affect model attempts, but so far the largest one concerns the processes of bound and free e-captures on Be-7, hence its life-time, whose known estimates are valid only for solar conditions. RGB and AGB stages have temperatures and densities below the envelope covering a wide range and differing from solar by up to a factor of five for T and up to five orders of magnitudes for rho, hence extrapolations are unreliable. Recently, we presented an estimate of the Be-7 half-life based on a fully quantistic method that goes beyond the Debye-Huckel approximation.     Algo-Functional Indexes and Spatiotemporal Parameters of Gait after Sacroiliac Joint Arthrodesis

    Aims of the study were to evaluate the reliability and validity of the Italian version of the Majeed and Iowa questionnaires and to investigate the long-term surgical outcomes following sacroiliac joint arthrodesis. Twenty one patients who underwent a sacroiliac joint arthrodesis and 21 healthy subjects were evaluated. The experimental procedure consisted of gait analysis and a physical activity assessment (in both groups) and of administration of outcome questionnaires and pain assessment (in the patient group). The Majeed and Iowa questionnaires showed excellent reliability, excellent (for the Majeed questionnaire) and good (for the Iowa questionnaire) construct validity, and poor convergent validity (for both questionnaires) relative to walking speed. Most of the patients reported no pain and minimum pain-related disability and their physical activity profile was comparable to healthy controls. Patients showed an impaired walking performance (i.e., they walked slower and using shorter steps) compared with healthy controls. Long-term walking pattern abnormalities following sacroiliac joint arthrodesis may occur despite excellent clinical results. Given their excellent reliability and construct validity, the Majeed and Iowa questionnaires can be used in combination with the assessment of spatiotemporal gait parameters for the prognostic assessment and/or follow-up of surgical patients

    Effectiveness of a home-based telerehabilitation system in patients after total hip arthroplasty: study protocol of a randomized controlled trial

    Background: The demand for total hip arthroplasty (THA) is quickly rising given the escalating global incidence of hip osteoarthritis, and it is widely accepted that the post-surgery rehabilitation is key to optimize outcomes. The overall objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a new telerehabilitation solution, ReHub, for the physical function and clinical outcome improvement following THA. The specific aims of this manuscript are to describe the study design, protocol, content of interventions, and primary and secondary outcomes and to discuss the clinical rehabilitation impact of the expected experimental results. Methods/design: This prospective, randomized, controlled, parallel-group trial will include 56 patients who had undergone primary THA. Patients are randomized to a control group (standard rehabilitation during the 2-week stay in the rehabilitation clinic followed by 3 weeks of unsupervised home-based rehabilitation) or an experimental group (standard rehabilitation during the 2-week stay in the rehabilitation clinic followed by 3 weeks of home-based ReHub-assisted telerehabilitation). The primary outcome is physical performance assessed through the Timed Up-and-Go (TUG) test. Secondary outcomes include independence level, pain intensity, hip disability, hip range of motion, muscle strength, and patient's perception of clinical improvement. Discussion: Proving the clinical and cost-effectiveness of a home-based telerehabilitation program for physical and muscle function following THA could support its systematic incorporation in post-surgical rehabilitation protocols, which should be tailored to the individual and collective needs

    Dasatinib modulates sensitivity to pemetrexed in malignant pleural mesothelioma cell lines

    BACKGROUND: Thymidylate synthase (TS), one of the key enzymes for thymidine synthesis, is a target of pemetrexed (PEM), a key agent for the systemic therapy of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) and its overexpression has been correlated to PEM-resistance. In MPM, experimental data report activation of the c-SRC tyrosine kinase suggesting it as a potential target to be further investigated. RESULTS: MPM cell lines showed different sensitivity, being MSTO the most and REN the least sensitive to PEM. REN cells showed high levels of both TS and SRC: dasatinib inhibited SRC activation and suppressed TS protein expression, starting from 100 nM dose, blocking the PEM-induced up regulation of TS protein levels. Dasatinib treatment impaired cells migration, and both sequential and co-administration with PEM significantly increased apoptosis. Dasatinib pretreatment improved sensitivity to PEM, downregulated TS promoter activity and, in association with PEM, modulated the downstream PI3K-Akt-mTOR signaling. CELL LINES AND METHODS: In three MPM cell lines (MPP89, REN and MSTO), the effects of c-SRC inhibition, in correlation with TS expression and PEM sensitivity, were evaluated. PEM and dasatinib, a SRC inhibitor, were administered as single agents, in combination or sequentially. Cell viability, apoptosis and migration, as well as TS expression and SRC activation have been assessed. CONCLUSIONS: These data indicate that dasatinib sensitizes mesothelioma cells to PEM through TS down-regulation

    Histone deacetylase inhibition synergistically enhances pemetrexed cytotoxicity through induction of apoptosis and autophagy in non-small cell lung cancer

    Background: Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Pemetrexed, a multi-target folate antagonist, has demonstrated efficacy in NSCLC histological subtypes characterized by low thymidylate synthase (TS) expression. Among many other potential targets, histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACi) modulate TS expression, potentially sensitizing to the cytotoxic action of anti-cancer drugs that target the folate pathway, such as pemetrexed. Since high levels of TS have been linked to clinical resistance to pemetrexed in NSCLC, herein we investigated the molecular and functional effects of combined pemetrexed and ITF2357, a pan-HDACi currently in clinical trials as an anti-cancer agent.Results: In NSCLC cell lines, HDAC inhibition by ITF2357 induced histone and tubulin acetylation and downregulated TS expression at the mRNA and protein level. In combination experiments in vitro ITF2357 and pemetrexed demonstrated sequence-dependent synergistic growth-inhibitory effects, with the sequence pemetrexed followed by ITF2357 inducing a strikingly synergistic reduction in cell viability and induction of both apoptosis and autophagy in all cell line models tested, encompassing both adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Conversely, simultaneous administration of both drugs achieved frankly antagonistic effects, while the sequence of ITF2357 followed by pemetrexed had additive to slightly synergistic growth-inhibitory effects only in certain cell lines. Similarly, highly synergistic growth inhibition was also observed in patient-derived lung cancer stem cells (LCSC) exposed to pemetrexed followed by ITF2357. In terms of molecular mechanisms of interaction, the synergistic growth-inhibitory effects observed were only partially related to TS modulation by ITF2357, as genetic silencing of TS expression potentiated growth inhibition by either pemetrexed or ITF2357 and, to a lesser extent, by their sequential combination. Genetic and pharmacological approaches provided an interesting link between the autophagic and apoptotic pathways, and showed that sequential pemetrexed/ITF2357 causes a toxic form of autophagy with consequent activation of a caspase-dependent apoptotic program. In vivo experiments in NSCLC xenografts confirmed that sequential pemetrexed/ITF2357 is feasible and results in increased inhibition of tumor growth and increased mice survival.Conclusions: Overall, these data provide a strong rationale for the clinical development of sequential schedules employing pemetrexed followed by HDACi in NSCLC

    First Results of the 140^{140}Ce(n,Îł)141^{141}Ce Cross-Section Measurement at n_TOF

    An accurate measurement of the 140^{140}Ce(n,Îł) energy-dependent cross-section was performed at the n_TOF facility at CERN. This cross-section is of great importance because it represents a bottleneck for the s-process nucleosynthesis and determines to a large extent the cerium abundance in stars. The measurement was motivated by the significant difference between the cerium abundance measured in globular clusters and the value predicted by theoretical stellar models. This discrepancy can be ascribed to an overestimation of the 140^{140}Ce capture cross-section due to a lack of accurate nuclear data. For this measurement, we used a sample of cerium oxide enriched in 140^{140}Ce to 99.4%. The experimental apparatus consisted of four deuterated benzene liquid scintillator detectors, which allowed us to overcome the difficulties present in the previous measurements, thanks to their very low neutron sensitivity. The accurate analysis of the p-wave resonances and the calculation of their average parameters are fundamental to improve the evaluation of the 140^{140}Ce Maxwellian-averaged cross-section

    Study of the photon strength functions and level density in the gamma decay of the n+U-234 reaction

    The accurate calculations of neutron-induced reaction cross sections are relevant for many nuclear applications. The photon strength functions and nuclear level densities are essential inputs for such calculations. These quantities for U-235 are studied using the measurement of the gamma de-excitation cascades in radiative capture on U-234 with the Total Absorption Calorimeter at n_TOF at CERN. This segmented 4 pi gamma calorimeter is designed to detect gamma rays emitted from the nucleus with high efficiency. This experiment provides information on gamma multiplicity and gamma spectra that can be compared with numerical simulations. The code DICEBOXC is used to simulate the gamma cascades while GEANT4 is used for the simulation of the interaction of these gammas with the TAC materials. Available models and their parameters are being tested using the present data. Some preliminary results of this ongoing study are presented and discussed
