Copper Removal Mediated by Pseudomonas veronii 2E in Batch and Continuous Reactors

Non treated Copper-loaded effluents disposed in water-bodies can cause severe damage in biota, so its removal before discharge is required. The aim of this work was to study the interaction of free and immobilised Pseudomonas veronii 2E with Copper, together with the design of biotreatment systems. Free cell sorption kinetics showed a 24 h-maximal retention of 0.330 mmol/g biomass, from 1 mM copper at 32 °C. Sorption isotherms revealed a specific maximal retention capacity 0.523 mmol/g. Optimal sorption achieved with biomass immobilised on vegetable sponge was 71.4% at 24 h. A reactor with recirculation and 3 continuous reactors in series were designed, obtaining final sorption of 78.3 and 56.0% at 9 and 1 days respectively. Copper desorption using hydrochloric acid was evaluated in both reactors. This work presents alternatives of applicable biotreatments of copper-loaded effluents, characterized by a combination of metal removal and recovery with low cost

ApoE-deficient mice and fenritinide: a structural study of the skin

Fenretinide, a synthetic retinoid derivative first investigated for cancer prevention and treatment, has been shown to ameliorate glucose tolerance and the plasma lipid profile, and to reduce body fat mass. Since these effects, together with its ability to inhibit ceramide synthesis, have suggested that fenretinide may display anti-atherosclerotic effects, the purpose of our work was to evaluate the effect of fenretinide on accumulation of lipids on the skin of a dyslipidemic mouse model that spontaneously develops atherosclerosis. To this aim, 9-weeks-old apoE-knockout (EKO) female mice were fed for 12 weeks with a Western diet, without (control) or with (0.1% w/w) fenretinide. At sacrifice, skin biopsies were excised from the thoracic region, dissected in smaller fragments and processed for structural morphology analysis on both paraffin and semithin sections. As a reference, wild-type (WT) mice were likewise treated. Morphological analysis did not show any significant difference between the skin of treated and untreated WT mice. In both the experimental groups, indeed, the epidermis appeared build-up of ordinated overlapped layers of cells and in the dermis there were no signs of alteration. The presence of foam cells was detected only in EKO mice treated and untreated. Other morphological alterations were also visible, although shared almost equally in EKO-Ctrl and EKO-Fen animals. Our data suggest that fenretinide slightly interferes with lipid accumulation in the skin of EKO mice

Diastasis Recti and Other Midline Defects: Totally Subcutaneous Endoscopic Approach

    Get PDF
Diastasis of the rectus is defined as the separation of the midline or alba line, which originates in a laxity of the interlocking fibers from the aponeurosis of both rectus muscles. At present, its surgical correction continues to be discussed. However, there is a multiplicity of factors that justify it

The Development Of Fan Delta In The System Lake Pueyrredón-Posadas And Its Correlation With Allocyclic Controls Postglacial Pleistocene-Holocene In The Patagonian Andes, Argentina

At the foot of the Andes in Patagonia argentine, a series of oligotrophic lakes were formed by deglaciation during Late Pleistocene – Early Holocene. The Pueyrredón-Posadas Lacustrine System (P-PLS) in Argentina belongs to this group of postglacial lakes. In the southern coast of the P-PLS four fan-deltas were developed; the largest development in this area is located in the mouth of Furioso River Eastward, whereas the others three decrease in size westward. The Furioso River fan-delta is connected with deposits of a firontal moraine; both together produce the separation of Pueyrredón and Posadas Lakes. The Oro and Suyai fan-deltas have developed barriers parallel to the coast by wave actions related to intense winds firom West. The apexes of these fan-deltas are correlated with datings in lacustrine levels at the North coast of the P-PLS. At both sides of fan-deltas, two terraces were identifed, at 300 masl and 400 masl. The timing in the base level fall of P-PLS allowed this particular systematic development of fan-deltas, as in geoform sizes (directly related to size of drainage basin) as altitudes of these apexes, with a methodical diminution of both parameters in the East-West sense. The bathymetric variations in P-PLS were corroborated with the integration of a digital elevation model and feld work. Thus, the development of these fan-deltas in the P-PLS could be, mainly, controlled by allocyclic factors: climate and base level.Fil: Horta, Luis Rubén.
