Automated Riverbed Sediment Classification Using Low-Cost Sidescan Sonar
The use of low-cost, low-profile, and highly portable sidescan sonar is on the ascendancy for imaging shallow riverine benthic sediments. A new automated, spatially explicit, and physically-based method for calculating lengthscales of bed texture elements in sidescan echograms (a 2D plot of acoustic intensity as a function of slant range and distance) is suggested. It uses spectral analysis based on the wavelet transform of short sequences of echograms. The recursive application of the transform over small overlapping windows of the echogram provides a robust measure of lengthscales of alternating patterns of strong and weak echoes. This textural lengthscale is not a direct measure of grain size. Rather, it is a statistical representation that integrates over many attributes of bed texture, of which grain size is the most important. The technique is a physically-based means to identify regions of texture within a sidescan echogram, and could provide a basis for objective, automated riverbed sediment classification. HD148937: a multiwavelength study of the third Galactic member of the Of?p class
Three Galactic O-type stars belong to the rare class of Of?p objects: HD108,
HD191612, and HD148937. The first two stars show a wealth of phenomena,
including magnetic fields and strong X-ray emission, light variability, and
dramatic periodic spectral variability. We present here the first detailed
optical and X-ray study of the third Galactic Of?p star, HD148937.
Spectroscopic monitoring has revealed low-level variability in the Balmer and
HeII4686 lines, but constancy at HeI and CIII4650. The Ha line exhibits profile
variations at a possible periodicity of ~7d. Model atmosphere fits yield
T_{eff}=41000+-2000K, log(g)=4.0+-0.1, Mdot_{sph}<~ 10^{-7}Msol/yr and a
surabondance of nitrogen by a factor of four. At X-ray wavelengths, HD148937
resembles HD108 and HD191612 in having a thermal spectrum dominated by a
relatively cool component (kT=0.2keV), broad lines (>1700km/s), and an
order-of-magnitude overluminosity compared to normal O stars (log

Studying the Pulsation of Mira Variables in the Ultraviolet
We present results from an empirical study of the Mg II h & k emission lines
of selected Mira variable stars, using spectra from the International
Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE). The stars all exhibit similar Mg II behavior during
the course of their pulsation cycles. The Mg II flux always peaks after optical
maximum near pulsation phase 0.2-0.5, although the Mg II flux can vary greatly
from one cycle to the next. The lines are highly blueshifted, with the
magnitude of the blueshift decreasing with phase. The widths of the Mg II lines
are also phase-dependent, decreasing from about 70 km/s to 40 km/s between
phase 0.2 and 0.6. We also study other UV emission lines apparent in the IUE
spectra, most of them Fe II lines. These lines are much narrower and not nearly
as blueshifted as the Mg II lines. They exhibit the same phase-dependent flux

An Analysis of the Shapes of Interstellar Extinction Curves. V. The IR-Through-UV Curve Morphology
We study the IR-through-UV interstellar extinction curves towards 328
Galactic B and late-O stars. We use a new technique which employs stellar
atmosphere models in lieu of unreddened "standard" stars. This technique is
capable of virtually eliminating spectral mismatch errors in the curves. It
also allows a quantitative assessment of the errors and enables a rigorous
testing of the significance of relationships between various curve parameters,
regardless of whether their uncertainties are correlated. Analysis of the
curves gives the following results: (1) In accord with our previous findings,
the central position of the 2175 A extinction bump is mildly variable, its
width is highly variable, and the two variations are unrelated. (2) Strong
correlations are found among some extinction properties within the UV region,
and within the IR region. (3) With the exception of a few curves with extreme
(i.e., large) values of R(V), the UV and IR portions of Galactic extinction
curves are not correlated with each other. (4) The large sightline-to-sightline
variation seen in our sample implies that any average Galactic extinction curve
will always reflect the biases of its parent sample. (5) The use of an average
curve to deredden a spectral energy distribution (SED) will result in
significant errors, and a realistic error budget for the dereddened SED must
include the observed variance of Galactic curves. While the observed large
sightline-to-sightline variations, and the lack of correlation among the
various features of the curves, make it difficult to meaningfully characterize
average extinction properties, they demonstrate that extinction curves respond
sensitively to local conditions. Thus, each curve contains potentially unique

Darts fast-learning reduces theta power but is not affected by Hf-tRNS: A behavioral and electrophysiological investigation
Sports trainers have recently shown increasing interest in innovative methods, including transcranial electric stimulation, to enhance motor performance and boost the acquisition of new skills during training. However, studies on the effectiveness of these tools on fast visuomotor learning and brain activity are still limited. In this randomized single-blind, sham-controlled, between-subjects study, we investigated whether a single training session, either coupled or not with 2 mA online high-frequency transcranial random noise stimulation (hf-tRNS) over the bilateral primary motor cortex (M1), would affect dart-throwing performance (i.e., radial error, arm range of motion, and movement variability) in 37 healthy volunteers. In addition, potential neurophysiological correlates were monitored before and after the training through a 32-electrode portable electroencephalogram (EEG). Results revealed that a single training session improved radial error and arm range of motion during the dart-throwing task, but not movement variability. Furthermore, after the training, resting state-EEG data showed a decrease in theta power. Radial error, arm movement, and EEG were not further modulated by hf-tRNS. This indicates that a single training session, regardless of hf-tRNS administration, improves dart-throwing precision and movement accuracy. However, it does not improve movement variability, which might require multiple training sessions (expertise resulting in slow learning). Theta power decrease could describe a more efficient use of cognitive resources (i.e., attention and visuomotor skills) due to the fast dart-throwing learning. Further research could explore different sports by applying longer stimulation protocols and evaluating other EEG variables to enhance our understanding of the lasting impacts of multi-session hf-tRNS on the sensorimotor cortex within the framework of slow learning and training assistance
The Early Palomar Program (1950-1955) for the Discovery of Classical Novae in M81: Analysis of the Spatial Distribution, Magnitude Distribution, and Distance Suggestion
Data obtained in the 1950-1955 Palomar campaign for the discovery of
classical novae in M81 are set out in detail. Positions and apparent B
magnitudes are listed for the 23 novae that were found. There is modest
evidence that the spatial distribution of the novae does not track the B
brightness distribution of either the total light or the light beyond an
isophotal radius that is 70\arcsec from the center of M81. The nova
distribution is more extended than the aforementioned light, with a significant
fraction of the sample appearing in the outer disk/spiral arm region. We
suggest that many (perhaps a majority) of the M81 novae that are observed at
any given epoch (compared with say years ago) are daughters of
Population I interacting binaries. The conclusion that the present day novae
are drawn from two population groups, one from low mass white dwarf secondaries
of close binaries identified with the bulge/thick disk population, and the
other from massive white dwarf secondaries identified with the outer thin
disk/spiral arm population, is discussed. We conclude that the M81 data are
consistent with the two population division as argued previously from (1) the
observational studies on other grounds by Della Valle et al. (1992, 1994),
Della Valle & Livio (1998), and Shafter et al. (1996) of nearby galaxies, (2)
the Hatano et al. (1997a,b) Monte Carlo simulations of novae in M31 and in the
Galaxy, and (3) the Yungelson et al. (1997) population synthesis modeling of
nova binaries. Two different methods of using M81 novae as distance indicators
give a nova distance modulus for M81 as , consistent with the

This article examines the origins of BBC2's reputation as a purveyor of films from around the world, exploring the significance and impact of the strand World Cinema (1965-74) and assessing the range and diversity of its offer. Foreign-language titles had been broadcast by the Corporation since before the Second World War, due partly to their ready availability at a time when Hollywood films were 'off limits', given the hostility of American (and British) film companies towards the new rival medium of television. During this early period, however, these continental films were not popular, undoubtedly due to the fact that subtitles were very difficult to read on small, low-definition television screens. BBC2, with its commitment to minority tastes and interests and its use of both the higher-definition 625-line UHF system and colour, was perfectly placed to revive and foster interest in world cinema. For those who urged broadcasters to adopt and maintain an enlightened film policy, World Cinema became exemplary, as a rare exception to the general rules in early television of editing for content or length, block buying (the practice of buying the rights to a mixed package of films in order to acquire certain gems) and haphazard scheduling. For a generation of cinephiles, World Cinema was a formative and educative experience. Particular attention is paid here to the first five years of World Cinema, which saw the strand give attention to a variety of 'New Waves' and relay experiences from behind the Iron Curtain and further afield
Photometric Observations of Three High Mass X-Ray Binaries and a Search for Variations Induced by Orbital Motion
We searched for long period variation in V-band, Ic-band and RXTE X-ray light
curves of the High Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) LS 1698 / RX J1037.5-5647, HD
110432 / 1H 1249-637 and HD 161103 / RX J1744.7-2713 in an attempt to discover
orbitally induced variation. Data were obtained primarily from the ASAS
database and were supplemented by shorter term observations made with the 24-
and 40-inch ANU telescopes and one of the robotic PROMPT telescopes. Fourier
periodograms suggested the existence of long period variation in the V-band
light curves of all three HMXBs, however folding the data at those periods did
not reveal convincing periodic variation. At this point we cannot rule out the
existence of long term V-band variation for these three sources and hints of
longer term variation may be seen in the higher precision PROMPT data. Long
term V-band observations, on the order of several years, taken at a frequency
of at least once per week and with a precision of 0.01 mag, therefore still
have a chance of revealing long term variation in these three HMXBs.Comment: Accepted, RAA, May, 201
The composition of circumstellar gas and dust in 51 Oph
We analyze ISO archive data of the nearby bright emission-line star 51 Oph,
previously classified as a proto-planetary system similar to beta Pic. The
infrared spectrum reveals the presence of gas-phase emission bands of hot
(approx 850 K) CO, CO_2, H_2O and NO. In addition to this, partially
crystalline silicate dust is present. The solid-state bands and the energy
distribution are indicative of dust that has formed recently, rather than of
debris dust. The presence of hot molecular gas and the composition of the
circumstellar dust are highly unusual for a young star and are reminiscent of
what is found around evolved (AGB) stars, although we exclude the possibility
of 51 Oph belonging to this group. We suggest several explanations for the
nature of 51 Oph, including a recent episode of mass loss from a Be star, and
