Some preliminary work on metaphosphates in ceramics

    Get PDF
For a good many years the accepted method of cementing ceramic joints was with a mixture of fire clay grog and a plastic clay binder. This did not prove too satisfactory for several reasons. Usually when enough plastic clay was added to give good workability the vitrification was lowered to such an extent that either excessive shrinkage or excessive bloating occurred, depending upon the extent to which the vitrification point was exceeded...In order to obtain a cement with high strength throughout a long firing range the manufacturers have turned to the addition of various organic binders and inorganic fluxes. Most widely used of these foreign ingredients is sodium silicate...Reported as also capable of producing a ceramic cement is a substance call Calgon, chemically, sodium hexametaphosphate...It was decided to further investigate the possibilities of sodium hexametaphosphate as a ceramic binder and to investigate as far as possible the feasibility of the new metaphosphates as ceramic binders --Introduction, page 1-3

Electromagnetic extraction of energy from black hole-neutron star binaries

The coalescence of black hole-neutron star binaries is expected to be a principal source of gravitational waves for the next generation of detectors, Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo. Ideally, these and other gravitational wave sources would have a distinct electromagnetic counterpart, as significantly more information could be gained through two separate channels. In addition, since these detectors will probe distances with non-negligible redshift, a coincident observation of an electromagnetic counterpart to a gravitational wave signal would facilitate a novel measurement of dark energy [1]. For black hole masses not much larger than the neutron star mass, the tidal disruption and subsequent accretion of the neutron star by the black hole provides one avenue for generating an electromagnetic counterpart [2]. However, in this work, we demonstrate that, for all black hole-neutron star binaries observable by Advanced LIGO/Virgo, the interaction of the black hole with the magnetic field of the neutron star will drive a Poynting flux. This Poynting flux generates synchrotron/curvature radiation as the electron-positron plasma in the neutron star magnetosphere is accel- erated, and thermal radiation as the plasma is focused onto the neutron star magnetic poles, creating a "hot spot" on the neutron star surface. This novel effect will gener- ate copious luminosity, comparable to supernovae and active galactic nuclei, so that black hole-neutron star coalescences detectable with gravitational waves by Advanced LIGO/Virgo could also potentially be detectable electromagnetically.Comment: 17 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Natur

The practical application of Spanish to the theater career: the simulation of a bilingual production process

    Get PDF
This research, conducted during the Spring of 2014, investigates how to apply Spanish, in a practical sense, to a theatre career. Subjects explored include the challenges faced when the Stage Manager switches the room from traditionally English speaking, to one in which the performers and technicians no longer all speak the same language. Overall, the Stage Manager role grew into a nexus of communication among a crew of technicians who speak English and a cast who either speak Spanish or will be working with a script that utilizes the Spanish language and Latino culture. The research included executing the production process of the musical In the Heights using both Spanish and English. Rehearsals involved giving certain instructions and directions in Spanish occasionally followed by an English translation, speaking only in Spanish to the performers who speak Spanish natively, and calling the show in Spanish. Thus, the combination of native and non-speakers and the pressure of practical performance simulated the process and challenges of working in a bilingual theatre environment. Furthermore, the language shift prompted some tension between white, male technicians and the production. The outcomes include changes to subliminal job requirements and a lingual switch of the environment. As the process continued, the English-speaking students were thrown into a bilingual environment wherein they were expected to achieve their usual standards without their usual primary language advantage and to take it upon themselves to ask for translations. However, the room also experienced an increase in Spanish understanding and use by those who come into the room speaking only English. This additionally led to a shift in attitude. Most personnel entering the process were adjusted to an environment wherein any person who does not speak English is asked to learn and communicate as the majority does. The process developed from being primarily English speaking into a process where the main resource language was mainly Spanish. Although many experienced tension within the process with regards to the power dynamics of the Spanish and English languages, the power of Spanish in the room could not be compromised

Virtual Prototyping for validation of functional architectures

    Get PDF
International audienceThis paper will present a new approach how to use virtual prototyping to validate functional architectures. The approach points out how functional architecture can be set up and tested in order to get highly validated data before making final architectural/design decisions. The introduction will speak about the current facts, the constrains and the tendencies to create a common and understandable picture in which the proposed solution may be implemented. Then we will give a description and definition of MiLMiL / SiLSiL / HiL, rapid prototyping and virtual prototyping to avoid confusion. The main part will discuss functional and logical architecture, the mapping of both as well a the variants that have to be considered. It will be shown how validation by virtual prototyping can help to define and proof architectural decision. Finally we will give a short outlook on how to migrate from virtual prototyping systems via rapid prototyping via fullpass and bypass to HiL applications. The conclusion summarizes the advantages compared to the current situation

In this paper, the concept of civic competences, its definition and content in Croatian and European educational documents is being examined. The paper analyses the following normative and strategic and development documents: the National Curriculum Framework for Preschool and General Compulsory and Secondary Education (2010), National Programme of Education for Human Rights and Democratic Citizenship (1996), Croatian National Education Standard (2006), Education Sector Development Plan 2005- 2010 (2005), Law on Education in Primary and Secondary Schools (2008), National Programme for the Protection and Promotion of Human Rights from 2008 to 2011 (2007), Recommendation of the European Parliament and of the Council of 18 to December 2006 on key competences for lifelong learning (2006). The content analysis reveals that the development of civic competences of students in the education system is anticipated by the fundamental European and Croatian legal and normative documents, but not enough by development and strategic documents that would contribute to determining the accuracy, coherence and signposts for educational practice

Evidence of Hydrocarbon-Rich Fluid Interaction with Clays: Clay Mineralogy and Boron Isotope Data from Gulf of Cádiz Mud Volcano Sediments

    Get PDF
Clay dehydration at great depth generates fluids and overpressures in organic-rich sediments that can release isotopically light boron from mature organic matter, producing 10B-rich fluids. The B can be incorporated into the tetrahedral sites of authigenic illite during the illitization of smectite. Therefore, the crystal-chemical and geochemical characterization of illite, smectite or interlayered illite–smectite clay minerals can be an indicator of depth (temperature) and reactions with the basin fluids. The aim of this study was to determine the detailed clay mineralogy, B-content and isotopic composition in illite–smectite rich samples of mud volcanoes from the Gulf of Cádiz, in order to evaluate interactions of hydrocarbon-rich fluids with clays. Molecular modeling of the illite structure was performed, using electron density functional theory (DFT) methods to examine the phenomenon of B incorporation into illite at the atomic level. We found that it is energetically preferable for B to reside in the tetrahedral sites replacing Si atoms than in the interlayer of expandable clays. The B abundances in this study are high and consistent with previous results of B data on interstitial fluids, suggesting that hydrocarbon-related fluids approaching temperatures of methane generation (150 C) are the likely source of B-rich illite in the studied samples
