    Comparison of the h-index for different fields of research using bootstrap methodology

    An important disadvantage of the h-index is that typically it cannot take into account the specific field of research of a researcher. Usually sample point estimates of the average and median h-index values for the various fields are reported that are highly variable and dependent of the specific samples and it would be useful to provide confidence intervals of prediction accuracy. In this paper we apply the non-parametric bootstrap technique for constructing confidence intervals for the h-index for different fields of research. In this way no specific assumptions about the distribution of the empirical h-index are required as well as no large samples since that the methodology is based on resampling from the initial sample. The results of the analysis showed important differences between the various fields. The performance of the bootstrap intervals for the mean and median h-index for most fields seems to be rather satisfactory as revealed by the performed simulation

    Oligodendroblasts Distinguished from O-2A Glial Progenitors by Surface Phenotype (O4+GalC-) and Response to Cytokines Using Signal Transducer LIFRβ

    AbstractThe developmental potential of progenitors at two final stages of the macroglial lineage giving rise to oligodendrocytes in postnatal rat brain was studied in response to defined and serum inducers of astrocyte gene expression. Cell immunoselection [with GD3 ganglioside, 04 and galactocerebroside (GalC) antibodies] was used to isolate G+D3O4- and O4+GalC- phenotypes directly from premyelinating cerebrum. In a basal defined culture medium, G+D3O4- progenitors differentiated infrequently into oligodendrocytes on a growth substratum comprised of meningeal cell-derived extracellular matrix. Their conversion into astrocytes, as determined by immunofluorescence analysis of glial fibrillary acidic protein expression, was induced by oncostatin-M as well as leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) and ciliary neurotrophic factor, but not interleukin-6, and required extracellular matrix. By comparison, O4+GalC- progenitors were refractory to astrocyte induction under these conditions, as in short-term cultures of optic nerve. and differentiated into myelinogenic oligodendrocytes instead. Only in response to an overriding stimulus in fetal bovine serum did O4+GalC- progenitors, like their immediate precursors, become astrocytic. These data functionally distinguish two classes of astrocyte-inducing agents to provide clear evidence of an oligodendroblast, a progenitor defined by surface phenotype (O4+GalC-) and an altered response of the oligodendrocyte lineage to cytokines using signal transducer LIFRβ

    Investigation of protein induction in tumour vascular targeted strategies by MALDI MSI.

    Characterising the protein signatures in tumours following vascular-targeted therapy will help determine both treatment response and resistance mechanisms. Here, mass spectrometry imaging and MS/MS with and without ion mobility separation have been used for this purpose in a mouse fibrosarcoma model following treatment with the tubulin-binding tumour vascular disrupting agent, combretastatin A-4-phosphate (CA-4-P). Characterisation of peptides after in situ tissue tryptic digestion was carried out using Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionisation-Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-MS) and Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionisation-Ion Mobility Separation-Mass Spectrometry Imaging (MALDI IMS-MSI) to observe the spatial distribution of peptides. Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionisation-Ion Mobility Separation-Tandem Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-IMS-MS/MS) of peaks was performed to elucidate any pharmacological responses and potential biomarkers. By taking tumour samples at a number of time points after treatment gross changes in the tissue were indicated by changes in the signal levels of certain peptides. These were identified as arising from haemoglobin and indicated the disruption of the tumour vasculature. It was hoped that the use of PCA-DA would reveal more subtle changes taking place in the tumour samples however these are masked by the dominance of the changes in the haemoglobin signals
