Higher physical fitness levels are associated with less language decline in healthy ageing
Healthy ageing is associated with decline in cognitive abilities such as
language. Aerobic fitness has been shown to ameliorate decline in some
cognitive domains, but the potential benefits for language have not been
examined. In a cross-sectional sample, we investigated the relationship between
aerobic fitness and tip-of-the-tongue states. These are among the most frequent
cognitive failures in healthy older adults and occur when a speaker knows a
word but is unable to produce it. We found that healthy older adults indeed
experience more tip-of-the-tongue states than young adults. Importantly, higher
aerobic fitness levels decrease the probability of experiencing
tip-of-the-tongue states in healthy older adults. Fitness-related differences
in word finding abilities are observed over and above effects of age. This is
the first demonstration of a link between aerobic fitness and language
functioning in healthy older adults
Influence of extended dynamics on phase transitions in a driven lattice gas
Monte Carlo simulations and dynamical mean-field approximations are performed
to study the phase transition in a driven lattice gas with nearest-neighbor
exclusion on a square lattice. A slight extension of the microscopic dynamics
with allowing the next-nearest-neighbor hops results in dramatic changes.
Instead of the phase separation into high- and low-density regions in the
stationary state the system exhibits a continuous transition belonging to the
Ising universality class for any driving. The relevant features of phase
diagram are reproduced by an improved mean-field analysis.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure
Variational method and duality in the 2D square Potts model
The ferromagnetic q-state Potts model on a square lattice is analyzed, for
q>4, through an elaborate version of the operatorial variational method. In the
variational approach proposed in the paper, the duality relations are exactly
satisfied, involving at a more fundamental level, a duality relationship
between variational parameters. Besides some exact predictions, the approach is
very effective in the numerical estimates over the whole range of temperature

Do Individual Females Differ Intrinsically in Their Propensity to Engage in Extra-Pair Copulations?
BACKGROUND: While many studies have investigated the occurrence of extra-pair paternity in wild populations of birds, we still know surprisingly little about whether individual females differ intrinsically in their principal readiness to copulate, and to what extent this readiness is affected by male attractiveness. METHODOLOGY/FINDINGS: To address this question I used captive zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) as a model system. I first measured female readiness to copulate when courted by a male for the first time in life. Second, I conducted choice-chamber experiments to assess the mating preferences of individual females prior to pair formation. I then paired females socially with a non-desired mate and once they had formed a stable pair bond, I observed the inclination of these females to engage in extra-pair copulations with various males. Females showing a high readiness to copulate when courted by a male for the first time in life were much more likely to engage in extra-pair copulations later in life than others. Male attractiveness, as measured in choice tests, was a useful predictor of whether females engaged in extra-pair copulations with these males, but, surprisingly, the attractiveness of a female's social partner had no effect on her fidelity. However, it remained unclear what made some males more attractive than others. Contrary to a widespread but rarely tested hypothesis, females did not preferentially copulate with males having a redder beak or singing at a higher rate. Rather it seemed that song rate was a confounding factor in choice-chamber experiments: song attracted the female's attention but did not increase the male's attractiveness as a copulation partner. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Intrinsic variation in female readiness to copulate as well as variation in the attractiveness of the extra-pair male but not the social partner decided the outcome of extra-pair encounters

Density functional theory for nearest-neighbor exclusion lattice gasses in two and three dimensions
To speak about fundamental measure theory obliges to mention dimensional
crossover. This feature, inherent to the systems themselves, was incorporated
in the theory almost from the beginning. Although at first it was thought to be
a consistency check for the theory, it rapidly became its fundamental pillar,
thus becoming the only density functional theory which possesses such a
property. It is straightforward that dimensional crossover connects, for
instance, the parallel hard cube system (three-dimensional) with that of
squares (two-dimensional) and rods (one-dimensional). We show here that there
are many more connections which can be established in this way. Through them we
deduce from the functional for parallel hard (hyper)cubes in the simple
(hyper)cubic lattice the corresponding functionals for the nearest-neighbor
exclusion lattice gases in the square, triangular, simple cubic, face-centered
cubic, and body-centered cubic lattices. As an application, the bulk phase

Photoacoustic Experimental System To Confirm Infrared Absorption Due to Greenhouse Gases
An experimental system for detecting infrared absorption using the photoacoustic (PA) effect is described. It is aimed for use at high-school level to illustrate the difference in infrared (IR) absorption among the gases contained in the atmosphere in connection with the greenhouse effect. The experimental system can be built with readily available components and is suitable for small-group experiments. The PA signal from a greenhouse gas (GHG), such as CO2, H2O, and CH4, can be detected down to a concentration of 0.1%. Since the basic theory of the PA effect in gases due to IR absorption is straightforward, the experiments with this PA system are accessible to students. It can be shown that there is a significant difference in IR absorption between GHGs and the major components of the atmosphere, N2, O2, and Ar, which helps students understand that the minor components, that is, the GHGs, determine the IR absorptivity of the atmosphere
Palette-colouring: a belief-propagation approach
We consider a variation of the prototype combinatorial-optimisation problem
known as graph-colouring. Our optimisation goal is to colour the vertices of a
graph with a fixed number of colours, in a way to maximise the number of
different colours present in the set of nearest neighbours of each given
vertex. This problem, which we pictorially call "palette-colouring", has been
recently addressed as a basic example of problem arising in the context of
distributed data storage. Even though it has not been proved to be NP complete,
random search algorithms find the problem hard to solve. Heuristics based on a
naive belief propagation algorithm are observed to work quite well in certain
conditions. In this paper, we build upon the mentioned result, working out the
correct belief propagation algorithm, which needs to take into account the
many-body nature of the constraints present in this problem. This method
improves the naive belief propagation approach, at the cost of increased
computational effort. We also investigate the emergence of a satisfiable to
unsatisfiable "phase transition" as a function of the vertex mean degree, for
different ensembles of sparse random graphs in the large size ("thermodynamic")

High-Density Support Matrices: Key to the Deep Borehole Disposal of Spent Nuclear Fuel
Abstract Deep (4-5 km) boreholes are emerging as a safe, secure, environmentally sound and potentially cost-effective option for disposal of high-level radioactive wastes, including plutonium. One reason this option has not been widely accepted for spent fuel is because stacking the containers in a borehole could create load stresses threatening their integrity with potential for releasing highly mobile radionuclides like 129 I before the borehole is filled and sealed. This problem can be overcome by using novel high-density support matrices deployed as fine metal shot along with the containers. Temperature distributions in and around the disposal are modelled to show how decay heat from the fuel can melt the shot within weeks of disposal to give a dense liquid in which the containers are almost weightless. Finally, within a few decades, this liquid will cool and solidify, entombing the waste containers in a base metal sarcophagus sealed into the host rock
Matrix interpretation of multiple orthogonality
In this work we give an interpretation of a (s(d + 1) + 1)-term recurrence
relation in terms of type II multiple orthogonal polynomials.We rewrite
this recurrence relation in matrix form and we obtain a three-term recurrence
relation for vector polynomials with matrix coefficients. We present a matrix
interpretation of the type II multi-orthogonality conditions.We state a Favard
type theorem and the expression for the resolvent function associated to the
vector of linear functionals. Finally a reinterpretation of the type II Hermite-
Padé approximation in matrix form is given
