    Managing diversity in organisations: practitioner and academic perspectives: report from a gender in management special interest group research event

    Purpose - This report aims to provide a brief summary of the presentations made by researchers and practitioners at the Gender in Management Special Interest Group’s research event, Managing Diversity in Organisations: Practitioner and Academic Perspectives. Design/methodology/approach - The research seminar was chaired by Dr. Adelina Broadbridge (University of Stirling) and Dr. Gillian Maxwell (Glasgow Caledonian University), and featured five presentations related to diversity in organisations, with a focus on gender issues. Twenty-five delegates were in attendance. Findings - The academic research presented provided empirical evidence that women continue to face barriers to career progress in a number of industry sectors. The industry presentations provided examples of organisational efforts to improve diversity both among staff and customers. Research limitations/implications - More needs to be done to ensure that women enjoy career opportunities equal to those of men in a variety of industry sectors. Even in organisations where women are comparatively well represented, such as professional services firms, research indicates that they are disadvantaged in terms of career development and progress. Originality/value - This session provided a valuable opportunity for practitioners and academics to meet and share information regarding the state of diversity in today’s workplace

    Hypofractionated Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy for Recurrent or Oligometastatic Tumours in Children and Young Adults

    AIMS Cancer remains a leading cause of death in children and adolescents in the developed world. Despite advances in oncological management, rates of primary treatment failure remain significant. Radiation of recurrent or metastatic disease improves survival in adults but there is little data to support clinical decision making in the paediatric/teenage and young adult population. Materials And Methods We present a retrospective case series of 14 patients treated with stereotactic ablative body radiotherapy or stereotactic radiosurgery at The Royal Marsden Hospital from September 2011 to December 2015. Eligible patients were aged <25 years, with Lansky/Karnofsky performance status ≄60 with confirmed relapsed or metastatic tumour in fewer than three sites. Follow-up was in accordance with standard clinical care and included regular outpatient review and radiological surveillance. Local control, progression-free survival and overall survival are presented. RESULTS Data for 14 patients with 18 treated lesions were included. The median patient age was 15 years (range 5–20 years). Nine patients were treated for local recurrence and five for metastatic lesions. All patients had already undergone multiple previous treatments. Eleven patients had undergone previous radiotherapy. The median interval between the completion of initial radiotherapy and reirradiation was 29.0 months (range 0.2–49.5 months). The median follow-up was 3.4 years (range 0.28–6.4 years). The 1-year local control rate was 78.6% and the 2-year local control rate was 57.1%. Overall median survival was 58.4 months (95% confidence interval 33.8–82.9 months). Cumulative biologically effective doses (BED) over 200 Gy were associated with late toxicity (P = 0.04). CONCLUSION Radical doses of short-course hypofractionated radiotherapy can achieve excellent local control and may contribute to the prolongation of overall survival. There is a need for prospective trials exploring the use of ablative radiotherapy in metastatic disease in paediatric/teenage and young adult patients in order to establish safe and effective treatment schedules

    Influence of corners in excavations on damage assessment

    This paper provides guidance on quantifying the extent of corner effects in excavations and their impact on damage assessment. The corner effects’ extent is of great importance in making early decisions during project planning and preliminary design, particularly in relation to stakeholder engagement and placement of instruments. By using empirical relations, one is able to provide an equation, validated against the literature and additional numerical models, for estimating the extent of corner effects for a particular excavation geometry. Furthermore, two more equations for quantifying the damage of excavations to adjacent structures are presented and validated against two case studies in the literature. The proposed equations are also useful in the context of early stages of project development. Finally, a simple study shows the different effects of corners in sections parallel and perpendicular to a retaining wall. This highlights that corner effects may actually induce additional damage due to the introduction of a movement gradient, as opposed to the common previous perception that assumed that they were always conservative as they reduced absolute movements

    Marital status distribution of the U.K. military: Does it differ from the general population?

    UK media suggest UK military personnel have high divorce rates; to date, these claims are not substantiated. Marital status distribution of the general population and military were compared using data from the Office for National Statistics marital projections (2008) and a military cohort study (2007 – 2009), respectively. Data from the military cohort study was collected via questionnaire with a response rate of 56% for the overall cohort questionnaire and 99.5% for the martial status question. Overall, military personnel (59.4%) were more likely to be married than the general population (49.3%) and less likely to be divorced (3.7%) than the general population (10.0%). Military females and military personnel married under 30 years of age are more likely to report divorce. Military welfare services might target these groups with programs assisting marital relationships

    Characterization of the material response in the granular ratcheting

    The existence of a very special ratcheting regime has recently been reported in a granular packing subjected to cyclic loading \cite{alonso04}. In this state, the system accumulates a small permanent deformation after each cycle. After a short transient regime, the value of this permanent strain accumulation becomes independent on the number of cycles. We show that a characterization of the material response in this peculiar state is possible in terms of three simple macroscopic variables. They are defined that, they can be easily measured both in the experiments and in the simulations. We have carried out a thorough investigation of the micro- and macro-mechanical factors affecting these variables, by means of Molecular Dynamics simulations of a polydisperse disk packing, as a simple model system for granular material. Biaxial test boundary conditions with a periodically cycling load were implemented. The effect on the plastic response of the confining pressure, the deviatoric stress and the number of cycles has been investigated. The stiffness of the contacts and friction has been shown to play an important role in the overall response of the system. Specially elucidating is the influence of the particular hysteretical behavior in the stress-strain space on the accumulation of permanent strain and the energy dissipation.Comment: 13 pages, 20 figures.     Radar interferometry based settlement monitoring in tunnelling: visualisation and accuracy analyses

    Background The accurate, efficient and economical monitoring of settlements caused by tunnel boring machines, especially in regions of particular interest such as critical inner city areas, has become an important aspect of the tunnelling operation. Besides conventional terrestrial based methods to capture settlements, satellite based techniques that can accurately determine displacements remotely, are increasingly being used to augment standard terrestrial measurements. However, not much attention has been paid to analyse the accuracy of satellite based measurement data. In addition, there is also a lack of studies on how to visualise the resulting huge amount of data in the context of both the tunnel advancement and the existing building infrastructure. Methods This paper introduces the basics of settlement monitoring using radar interferometry methods, in particular showing the results obtained by processing radar images from the TerraSAR-X satellite to monitor a downtown construction site in DĂŒsseldorf, Germany, where a new underground line (“Wehrhahn-Linie”) is being built. By comparing terrestrial measurements with remote satellite based settlement data in temporal and spatial corridors, the accuracy of the radar interferometry method is shown. Moreover, a 4D visualisation concept is presented that correlates satellite and terrestrial based settlement data correlated with above-ground buildings and boring machine performance parameters within a Virtual Reality (VR) environment. Results By comparing up to 23,000 pairs of satellite and terrestrial based settlement data points of a real tunnelling project an accuracy of about ±1.5 mm in the measurement of deformation using the method of radar interferometry in urban areas can be stated. In addition, providing a visual analysis of data sources within a VR environment, the accuracy of terrestrial and satellite-based measurements can be visualised in different time steps. Sources of error that affect the degree of accuracy, such as atmospheric conditions, systematic errors in the evaluation of radar images and local events in the spatial corridor, can be quantified. In addition, the 4D visualisation can help reveal direct interdependencies between settlement data and boring machine performance data. Conclusions The Persistent Scatterer Interferometry (PSI) based on high resolution radar images of the TerraSAR-X satellite, in combination with conventional ground-based terrestrial measurements, provides a new settlement monitoring approach in tunnelling. For example, due to minimized surveying works and disruptions of construction activities on site and due to the large settlement area coming with a high magnitude of settlement data points, this combined monitoring approach is very practical and economical. Moreover, by visualizing the settlement data properly, the risk of damage of surface structures can be analysed and understood more precisely, which increases the safety of underground works

    A great deal of change has occurred within UK music education over the past decade. There were good intentions behind some of the changes; for example, the government had an ambition to provide everyone with access to music education during their school years. The timing of such initiatives, however, was unfortunate. Within the context of financial austerity and the subsequent cuts to public spending, education budgets came under increasing pressure. This article examines the current challenges facing music education within England and raises questions for researchers to consider as the future direction of research in the field starts to take shape
