    Social media and its impact on crisis communication: Case studies of Twitter use in emergency management in Australia and New Zealand

    There is a growing awareness worldwide of the significance of social media to communication in times of both natural and human-created disasters and crises. While the media have long been used as a means of broadcasting messages to communities in times of crisis ā€“ bushfires, floods, earthquakes etc. ā€“ the significance of social media in enabling many-to-many communication through ubiquitous networked computing and mobile media devices is becoming increasingly important in the fields of disaster and emergency management. This paper undertakes an analysis of the uses made of social media during two recent natural disasters: the January 2011 floods in Brisbane and South-East Queensland in Australia, and the February 2011 earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand. It is part of a wider project being undertaken by a research team based at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia, that is working with the Queensland Department of Community Safety (DCS) and the EIDOS Institute, and funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC) through its Linkages program. The project combines large-scale, quantitative social media tracking and analysis techniques with qualitative cultural analysis of communication efforts by citizens and officials, to enable both emergency management authorities and news media organisations to develop, implement, and evaluate new social media strategies for emergency communication

The majority of professionals surveyed in the online survey said they had come across child neglect in their role. A quarter of the UK adults surveyed have felt very or quite worried about the safety of a child living in their area. Nearly three-quarters of the children and young people had known a child or children who have shown signs of neglect and three in 10 children stated explicitly that they have been worried about whether a child is being looked after properly

    Quantitative PCR-based genome size estimation of the astigmatid mites Sarcoptes scabiei, Psoroptes ovis and Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus

    Background: The lack of genomic data available for mites limits our understanding of their biology. Evolving high-throughput sequencing technologies promise to deliver rapid advances in this area, however, estimates of genome size are initially required to ensure sufficient coverage. Methods. Quantitative real-time PCR was used to estimate the genome sizes of the burrowing ectoparasitic mite Sarcoptes scabiei, the non-burrowing ectoparasitic mite Psoroptes ovis, and the free-living house dust mite Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus. Additionally, the chromosome number of S. scabiei was determined by chromosomal spreads of embryonic cells derived from single eggs. Results: S. scabiei cells were shown to contain 17 or 18 small (< 2 M) chromosomes, suggesting an XO sex-determination mechanism. The average estimated genome sizes of S. scabiei and P. ovis were 96 ( 7) Mb and 86 ( 2) Mb respectively, among the smallest arthropod genomes reported to date. The D. pteronyssinus genome was estimated to be larger than its parasitic counterparts, at 151 Mb in female mites and 218 Mb in male mites. Conclusions: This data provides a starting point for understanding the genetic organisation and evolution of these astigmatid mites, informing future sequencing projects. A comparitive genomic approach including these three closely related mites is likely to reveal key insights on mite biology, parasitic adaptations and immune evasion

    Quantifying lexical usage: vocabulary pertaining to ecosystems and the environment

    A recent development in corpus linguistics has been the integration of critical discourse methodologies, which allow in-depth contextual and qualitative analyses, with corpus linguistic methodologies, which allow broader quantitative analyses. Our study is a contribution to this approach. We present the methods used in a study of vocabulary pertaining to the environment, undertaken as part of the UK National Ecosystem Assessment. A clear and replicable methodology was developed and applied to three custom-built specialised web corpora and a reference web corpus; automatic analysis of collocations found using the Sketch Engine was complemented by manual analysis; and a small-scale replicability check was carried out to ensure that investigator divergence was minimal. We outline the approach and some of the key findings, and we also suggest areas for further refinement/investigation. </jats:p

    Headspace for parents: qualitative report investigating the use of a mindfulness-based app for managing parents' stress during COVID-19

    Background Stress can compromise parental well-being and may contribute to harsh and critical parenting styles, which are in turn associated with children's conduct problems. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-related restrictions are likely to have exacerbated parental stress as, for many, UK-based family life was altered considerably. Mindfulness has been demonstrated to improve stress management and emotion regulation when delivered to parents in person, however, more accessible online interventions are under-researched. Aims To provide preliminary data on family well-being and parentā€“child relationships as well as the acceptability and usability of the Headspace app ā€“ a self-delivered mindfulness-based intervention ā€“ for parents in low-risk families during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Method We provided 12 parents with access to Headspace, and collected qualitative data (semi-structured interviews and 5 minute speech samples) immediately following the initial COVID-19 lockdown in the UK. The resulting transcripts were thematically analysed. Results Most parents reported Headspace to be acceptable and useful ā€“ improvements in parentsā€™ own sleep were particularly noted ā€“ and there was high adherence to the intervention. However, difficulties related to family well-being and parentā€“child relationships following the lockdown were also reported. Conclusions As a result of the confounding impact of COVID-19 restrictions, and varied access to app content, we were unable to determine any outcomes to be a result of practising mindfulness specifically. However, COVID-19 has had a profound impact on many UK-based families, including those previously at low risk, and our results demonstrate that Headspace may have beneficial effects for parents. There is a need to more rigorously test this tool with a broader range of families

    Huntington's disease patients display progressive deficits in hippocampal-dependent cognition during a task of spatial memory.

    BACKGROUND: Cognitive disturbances occur early in Huntington's disease (HD) and place a significant burden on the lives of patients and family members. Whilst these impairments are typically attributed to deterioration of the frontal-striatal pathways, accumulating evidence suggests that hippocampal dysfunction may also contribute to such impairments. Here, we employ a novel spatial memory task that has previously been shown to elicit impairments in individuals with focal hippocampal lesions, as a means to further investigate the role of hippocampal dysfunction in HD. METHOD: Sixty-four individuals participated in the study, including 32 healthy controls, 11 patients with diagnosed HD and 16 premanifest HD gene carriers. We also included an additional control group of 5 individuals with focal unilateral basal ganglia lesions. Participants undertook a task that measured perception and short-term spatial memory using computer-generated visual scenes. RESULTS: HD patients experienced significant impairments in spatial perception and memory, which strongly correlated with disease burden score (DBS). Premanifest gene carriers performed at a similar level to healthy controls throughout all aspects of the task indicating that the effects seen in the HD patients represent a deterioration in function. Interestingly, basal ganglia lesion patients were not impaired in any aspects of the task. CONCLUSION: There is evidence of significant deficits in hippocampal-dependent spatial cognition in HD that cannot be explained as a function of degeneration to the basal ganglia. The impairments were greatest in individuals with higher DBSs, suggesting that deficits relate to the disease process in HD

    Grid cells form a global representation of connected environments

    The firing patterns of grid cells in medial entorhinal cortex (mEC) and associated brain areas form triangular arrays that tessellate the environment [1, 2] and maintain constant spatial offsets to each other between environments [3, 4]. These cells are thought to provide an efficient metric for navigation in large-scale space [5, 6, 7, 8]. However, an accurate and universal metric requires grid cell firing patterns to uniformly cover the space to be navigated, in contrast to recent demonstrations that environmental features such as boundaries can distort [9, 10, 11] and fragment [12] grid patterns. To establish whether grid firing is determined by local environmental cues, or provides a coherent global representation, we recorded mEC grid cells in rats foraging in an environment containing two perceptually identical compartments connected via a corridor. During initial exposures to the multicompartment environment, grid firing patterns were dominated by local environmental cues, replicating between the two compartments. However, with prolonged experience, grid cell firing patterns formed a single, continuous representation that spanned both compartments. Thus, we provide the first evidence that in a complex environment, grid cell firing can form the coherent global pattern necessary for them to act as a metric capable of supporting large-scale spatial navigation
