    Global Study of Electron-Quark Contact Interactions

    We perform a global fit of data relevant to eeqqeeqq contact interactions, including deep inelastic scattering at high Q2Q^2 from ZEUS and H1, atomic physics parity violation in Cesium from JILA, polarized ee^- on nuclei scattering experiments at SLAC, Mainz and Bates, Drell-Yan production at the Tevatron, the total hadronic cross section σhad\sigma_{had} at LEP, and neutrino-nucleon scattering from CCFR. With only the new HERA data, the presence of contact interactions improves the fit compared to the Standard Model. When other data sets are included, the size of the contact contributions is reduced and the overall fit represents no real improvement over the Standard Model.Comment: 26 pages (now single-spaced), Revtex, 2 eps figures, uses epsf.sty.     New Solution of D=11 Supergravity on S^7 from D=4

    A new static partially twisted solution of N=4, SO(4) gauged supergravity in D=11 is obtained in this work using Cveti\^c et al embedding of four dimensional into eleven dimensional supergravities. In four dimensions we get two solutions: an asymptotic one corresponding to AdS4AdS_4 and a near horizon fixed point solution of the form AdS2×H2AdS_2\times H_2. Hence, while the former solution has 32 supercharges the latter turns out to have only 4 conserved. Moreover, we managed to find an exact interpolating solution, thus connecting the above two. Aiming at a future study of AdS/CFTAdS/CFT duality for the theory at hand we derived the Penrose limit of the four dimensional solutions. Interestingly the pp-wave limit of the near horizon solution suggests itself as being of the supernumerary supersymmetric type. In D=11 we exhibit the uplift of the four dimensional solutions: one associated to AdS4×S7AdS_4\times S^7 and the other to a foliation of AdS2×H2×S7AdS_2\times H_2 \times S^7, as well as their pp-wave limits.Comment: 14 pages, LaTe

    Asymptotic Structure of Symmetry Reduced General Relativity

    Gravitational waves with a space-translation Killing field are considered. In this case, the 4-dimensional Einstein vacuum equations are equivalent to the 3-dimensional Einstein equations with certain matter sources. This interplay between 4- and 3- dimensional general relativity can be exploited effectively to analyze issues pertaining to 4 dimensions in terms of the 3-dimensional structures. An example is provided by the asymptotic structure at null infinity: While these space-times fail to be asymptotically flat in 4 dimensions, they can admit a regular completion at null infinity in 3 dimensions. This completion is used to analyze the asymptotic symmetries, introduce the analog of the 4-dimensional Bondi energy-momentum and write down a flux formula. The analysis is also of interest from a purely 3-dimensional perspective because it pertains to a diffeomorphism invariant 3-dimensional field theory with {\it local} degrees of freedom, i.e., to a midi-superspace. Furthermore, due to certain peculiarities of 3 dimensions, the description of null infinity does have a number of features that are quite surprising because they do not arise in the Bondi-Penrose description in 4 dimensions.Comment: 39 Pages, REVTEX, CGPG-96/5-

    Model of the Quark Mixing Matrix

    The structure of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix is analyzed from the standpoint of a composite model. A model is constructed with three families of quarks, by taking tensor products of sufficient numbers of spin-1/2 representations and imagining the dominant terms in the mass matrix to arise from spin-spin interactions. Generic results then obtained include the familiar relation Vus=(md/ms)1/2(mu/mc)1/2|V_{us}| = (m_d/m_s)^{1/2} - (m_u/m_c)^{1/2}, and a less frequently seen relation Vcb=2[(ms/mb)(mc/mt)]|V_{cb}| = \sqrt{2} [(m_s/m_b) - (m_c/m_t)]. The magnitudes of VubV_{ub} and VtdV_{td} come out naturally to be of the right order. The phase in the CKM matrix can be put in by hand, but its origin remains obscure.Comment: Presented by Mihir P.     Scattering in Anti-de Sitter Space and Operator Product Expansion

    We develop a formalism to evaluate generic scalar exchange diagrams in AdS_{d+1} relevant for the calculation of four-point functions in AdS/CFT correspondence. The result may be written as an infinite power series of functions of cross-ratios. Logarithmic singularities appear in all orders whenever the dimensions of involved operators satisfy certain relations. We show that the AdS_{d+1} amplitude can be written in a form recognisable as the conformal partial wave expansion of a four-point function in CFT_{d} and identify the spectrum of intermediate operators. We find that, in addition to the contribution of the scalar operator associated with the exchanged field in the AdS diagram, there are also contributions of some other operators which may possibly be identified with two-particle bound states in AdS.     The energy spectrum of the lepton(s) in e^+e^- --> tt-bar --> l^{+-} ...../l^+l^-..... at next linear colliders (NLC) is studied for arbitrary longitudinal beam polarizations as a possible test of new physics in top-quark couplings. The most general non-standard couplings for gamma-tt-bar, Ztt-bar and Wtb vertices are considered.     Enabling multi-level relevance feedback on PubMed by integrating rank learning into DBMS

    Background: Finding relevant articles from PubMed is challenging because it is hard to express the user's specific intention in the given query interface, and a keyword query typically retrieves a large number of results. Researchers have applied machine learning techniques to find relevant articles by ranking the articles according to the learned relevance function. However, the process of learning and ranking is usually done offline without integrated with the keyword queries, and the users have to provide a large amount of training documents to get a reasonable learning accuracy. This paper proposes a novel multi-level relevance feedback system for PubMed, called RefMed, which supports both ad-hoc keyword queries and a multi-level relevance feedback in real time on PubMed. Results: RefMed supports a multi-level relevance feedback by using the RankSVM as the learning method, and thus it achieves higher accuracy with less feedback. RefMed "tightly" integrates the RankSVM into RDBMS to support both keyword queries and the multi-level relevance feedback in real time; the tight coupling of the RankSVM and DBMS substantially improves the processing time. An efficient parameter selection method for the RankSVM is also proposed, which tunes the RankSVM parameter without performing validation. Thereby, RefMed achieves a high learning accuracy in real time without performing a validation process. RefMed is accessible at http://dm.postech.ac.kr/refmed.     Search for Anomalous Couplings in the Higgs Sector at LEP

    Anomalous couplings of the Higgs boson are searched for through the processes e^+ e^- -> H gamma, e^+ e^- -> e^+ e^- H and e^+ e^- -> HZ. The mass range 70 GeV < m_H < 190 GeV is explored using 602 pb^-1 of integrated luminosity collected with the L3 detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies sqrt(s)=189-209 GeV. The Higgs decay channels H -> ffbar, H -> gamma gamma, H -> Z\gamma and H -> WW^(*) are considered and no evidence is found for anomalous Higgs production or decay. Limits on the anomalous couplings d, db, Delta(g1z), Delta(kappa_gamma) and xi^2 are derived as well as limits on the H -> gamma gamma and H -> Z gamma decay rates

    One-Pass Ranking Models for Low-Latency Product Recommendations

    Purchase logs collected in e-commerce platforms provide rich information about customer preferences. These logs can be leveraged to improve the quality of product recommenda-tions by feeding them to machine-learned ranking models. However, a variety of deployment constraints limit the näıve applicability of machine learning to this problem. First, the amount and the dimensionality of the data make in-memory learning simply not possible. Second, the drift of customers’ preference over time require to retrain the ranking model regularly with freshly collected data. This limits the time that is available for training to prohibitively short intervals. Third, ranking in real-time is necessary whenever the query complexity prevents us from caching the predictions.
