The Four-Fermi Model in Three Dimensions at Non-Zero Density and Temperature
The Four Fermi model with discrete chiral symmetry is studied in three
dimensions at non-zero chemical potential and temperature using the Hybrid
Monte Carlo algorithm. The number of fermion flavors is chosen large
to compare with analytic results. A first order chiral symmetry restoring
transition is found at zero temperature with a critical chemical potential
in good agreement with the large calculations. The critical index
of the correlation length is measured in good agreement with analytic
calculations. The two dimensional phase diagram (chemical potential vs.
temperature) is mapped out quantitatively. Finite size effects on relatively
small lattices and non-zero fermion mass effects are seen to smooth out the
chiral transition dramatically.Comment: 21 pages, sorry, no figure
Mesonic Wavefunctions in the three-dimensional Gross-Neveu model
We present results from a numerical study of bound state wavefunctions in the
(2+1)-dimensional Gross-Neveu model with staggered lattice fermions at both
zero and nonzero temperature. Mesonic channels with varying quantum numbers are
identified and analysed. In the strongly coupled chirally broken phase at T=0
the wavefunctions expose effects due to varying the interaction strength more
effectively than straightforward spectroscopy. In the weakly coupled chirally
restored phase information on fermion - antifermion scattering is recovered. In
the hot chirally restored phase we find evidence for a screened interaction.
The T=0 chirally symmetric phase is most readily distinguished from the
symmetric phase at high T via the fermion dispersion relation.Comment: 18 page
Numerical Portrait of a Relativistic Thin Film BCS Superfluid
We present results of numerical simulations of the 2+1d Nambu - Jona-Lasinio
model with a non-zero baryon chemical potential mu including the effects of a
diquark source term. Diquark condensates, susceptibilities and masses are
measured as functions of source strength j. The results suggest that diquark
condensation does not take place in the high density phase mu>mu_c, but rather
that the condensate scales non-analytically with j implying a line of critical
points and long range phase coherence. Analogies are drawn with the low
temperature phase of the 2d XY model. The spectrum of the spin-1/2 sector is
also studied yielding the quasiparticle dispersion relation. There is no
evidence for a non-zero gap; rather the results are characteristic of a normal
Fermi liquid with Fermi velocity less than that of light. We conclude that the
high density phase of the model describes a relativistic gapless thin film BCS
superfluid.Comment: 37 pages, 16 figure
Strong Decays of Light Vector Mesons
The vector meson strong decays rho-->pi pi, phi-->KK, and K^star-->pi K are
studied within a covariant approach based on the ladder-rainbow truncation of
the QCD Dyson--Schwinger equation for the quark propagator and the
Bethe--Salpeter equation for the mesons. The model preserves the one-loop
behavior of QCD in the ultraviolet, has two infrared parameters, and implements
quark confinement and dynamical chiral symmetry breaking. The 3-point decay
amplitudes are described in impulse approximation. The Bethe--Salpeter study
motivates a method for estimating the masses for heavier mesons within this
model without continuing the propagators into the complex plane. We test the
accuracy via the rho, phi and K^{star} masses and then produce estimates of the
model results for the a_1 and b_1 masses as well as the mass of the proposed
exotic vector pi_1(1400).Comment: Submitted for publication; 10x2-column pages, REVTEX 4, 3 .eps files

The Three Dimensional Thirring Model for Small N_f
We formulate the three dimensional Thirring model on a spacetime lattice and
study it for various even numbers of fermion flavors N_f by Monte Carlo
simulation. We find clear evidence for spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking at
strong coupling, contradicting the predictions of the 1/N_f expansion. The
critical point appears to correspond to an ultra-violet fixed point of the
renormalisation group; a fit to a RG-inspired equation of state in the vicinity
of the fixed point yields distinct critical exponents for N_f=2 and N_f=4,
while no fit is found for N_f=6, suggesting there is a critical number N_fc<6
beyond which no chiral symmetry breaking occurs. The spectrum of the N_f=2
theory is studied; the states examined vary sharply but continuously across the
transition.Comment: 50 pages LaTeX, including 16 tables and 20 figures - uses style file

Analytic properties of the Landau gauge gluon and quark propagators
We explore the analytic structure of the gluon and quark propagators of
Landau gauge QCD from numerical solutions of the coupled system of renormalized
Dyson--Schwinger equations and from fits to lattice data. We find sizable
negative norm contributions in the transverse gluon propagator indicating the
absence of the transverse gluon from the physical spectrum. A simple analytic
structure for the gluon propagator is proposed. For the quark propagator we
find evidence for a mass-like singularity on the real timelike momentum axis,
with a mass of 350 to 500 MeV. Within the employed Green's functions approach
we identify a crucial term in the quark-gluon vertex that leads to a positive
definite Schwinger function for the quark propagator.Comment: 42 pages, 16 figures, revtex; version to be published in Phys Rev
Masses of ground and excited-state hadrons
We present the first Dyson-Schwinger equation calculation of the light hadron
spectrum that simultaneously correlates the masses of meson and baryon ground-
and excited-states within a single framework. At the core of our analysis is a
symmetry-preserving treatment of a vector-vector contact interaction. In
comparison with relevant quantities the
root-mean-square-relative-error/degree-of freedom is 13%. Notable amongst our
results is agreement between the computed baryon masses and the bare masses
employed in modern dynamical coupled-channels models of pion-nucleon reactions.
Our analysis provides insight into numerous aspects of baryon structure; e.g.,
relationships between the nucleon and Delta masses and those of the
dressed-quark and diquark correlations they contain.Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures, 4 table
Survey of nucleon electromagnetic form factors
A dressed-quark core contribution to nucleon electromagnetic form factors is
calculated. It is defined by the solution of a Poincare' covariant Faddeev
equation in which dressed-quarks provide the elementary degree of freedom and
correlations between them are expressed via diquarks. The nucleon-photon vertex
involves a single parameter; i.e., a diquark charge radius. It is argued to be
commensurate with the pion's charge radius. A comprehensive analysis and
explanation of the form factors is built upon this foundation. A particular
feature of the study is a separation of form factor contributions into those
from different diagram types and correlation sectors, and subsequently a
flavour separation for each of these. Amongst the extensive body of results
that one could highlight are: r_1^{n,u}>r_1^{n,d}, owing to the presence of
axial-vector quark-quark correlations; and for both the neutron and proton the
ratio of Sachs electric and magnetic form factors possesses a zero.Comment: 43 pages, 17 figures, 12 tables, 5 appendice
Development and validation of a multivariable risk prediction model for serious infection in patients with psoriasis receiving systemic therapy
BACKGROUND: Patients with psoriasis are often concerned about the risk of serious infection associated with systemic psoriasis treatments. OBJECTIVES: To develop and externally validate a prediction model for serious infection in patients with psoriasis within 1 year of starting systemic therapies. METHODS: The risk prediction model was developed using the British Association of Dermatologists Biologic Interventions Register (BADBIR), and the German Psoriasis Registry PsoBest was used as the validation dataset. Model discrimination and calibration were assessed internally and externally using the C-statistic, the calibration slope and the calibration in the large. RESULTS: Overall 175 (1·7%) out of 10 033 participants from BADBIR and 41 (1·7%) out of 2423 participants from PsoBest developed a serious infection within 1 year of therapy initiation. Selected predictors in a multiple logistic regression model included nine baseline covariates, and starting infliximab was the strongest predictor. Evaluation of model performance showed a bootstrap optimism-corrected C-statistic of 0·64 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0·60-0·69], calibration in the large of 0·02 (95% CI -0·14 to 0·17) and a calibration slope of 0·88 (95% CI 0·70-1·07), while external validation performance was poor, with C-statistic 0·52 (95% CI 0·42-0·62), calibration in the large 0·06 (95% CI -0·25 to 0·37) and calibration slope 0·36 (95% CI -0·24 to 0·97). CONCLUSIONS: We present the first results of the development of a multivariable prediction model. This model may help patients and dermatologists in the U.K. and the Republic of Ireland to identify modifiable risk factors and inform therapy choice in a shared decision-making process
