The article is researching the life events of the Lithuanian man of letters, clergyman, ethnographer, folklorist, writer, publicist, historian and translator Liudvikas Adomas Jucevičius (Ludwik Adam Jucewicz, 1813–1846) while focusing on the years 1838–1840 when he was serving as the vicar in Švenčionys Parish. It was during these years that such famous works as literary legends as Baltijos jūros karalienė (en. The Queen of the Baltic Sea) and Džiugo kalnas (en. Džiugas Hill) were created. Simultaneously, Liudvikas Adomas Jucevičius created the works Lietuvių liaudies priežodžiai (en. Lithuanian Folk Proverbs) and Žemaitijos bruožai (en. The Features of Samogitia) which are still of high relevance to the Lithuanian academic community. The article reveals the starting point of the academic-publicist activity of this prominent personality at Vilnius Roman Catholic Spiritual academy which encouraged his academic pursuits in Švenčionys. The article also explores his deeds for the benefit of Švenčionys Parish. Finally, the academic, publicist and creative activity of Liudvikas Adomas Jucevičius during this period is researched. The focus is laid on the creative path of the personality in the context of the contemporary political and cultural developments in the society. Thereby, the emphasis of the article is not on the investigation of the content of the texts by Liudvikas Adomas Jucevičius, but rather on their spread and transfer to other publications thus highlighting the popularity of his writings at the time with the objective to trace the causes of the success of the texts.

    Get PDF
The article explains what may have led to the appearance of one of the most famous and popular legend in Lithuanian culture about the love of the Queen of the Baltic Sea, Jūratė, and the mortal fisherman Kastytis, and looks at the history of its research. According to most scholars, the legend “Queen of the Baltic Sea” was created by Liudvikas Adomas Jucevičius (Ludwik Adam Jucewicz, 1813–1846), a Lithuanian writer, ethnographer, folklorist, historian and translator. The article examines the first reviews of the story and explains how the academic world came to the conclusion that this source is not authentic. It also investigates which sources may have influenced Jucevičius’ story, including mythological plots and the literary works by other authors.

The Transnational Guqin Revival in Flushing, New York

Despite the guqin 3,000-year-old history the instrument nearly faced extinction in the Twentieth Century. Since the 2008 Beijing Olympics, which featured the guqin as a cultural symbol of Chinese identity, there has been a revival of the guqin and its traditional repertoire. This study looks at a small guqin community in New York City\u27s Flushing neighborhood, centered around Master Shi-hua Judy Yeh, and how transnational students are taking advantage of transnational organizations, like the New York Guqin School, to ease the transition into life in New York

Vibrational spectroscopy of phosphate-based electrodes for lithium rechargeable batteries.

The favorable energy densities and cycling performances attainable from lithium rechargeable batteries has prompted aggressive research in this field for over 30 years. In particular, phosphate-based electrodes receive much attention due to their competitive redox potentials, capacities, and enhanced safety compared to currently commercialized systems. In developing these materials, it is critical to have a good understanding of the fundamental reactions that occur during cycling. Vibrational spectroscopy is particularly useful in this regard because it is sensitive to the local structure of the electrodes. However, few researchers use vibrational spectroscopy to study lithium intercalation in phosphate-based electrodes. The intramolecular vibrations of the phosphate anions yield intense bands in the Raman and infrared spectrum that are sensitive to the immediate local environment of the phosphate anions; thus they are natural candidates for the technique. Measuring the infrared or Raman spectrum of these materials at various states of charge can provide a wealth of information about local structural changes and charge compensation reactions occurring within an electrode from the perspective of the phosphate anions. The first objective of this dissertation is to examine lithium intercalation with vibrational spectroscopy for three families of phosphate-based electrodes: phospho-olivine LiMPO4 (M = Fe, Mn) cathodes, LISICON Li3 M2(PO4)3 (M = V, Ti) cathodes, and LiSn2(PO4)3 and Sn3(PO4) 2 anodes. Symmetry-based analyses are used to interpret the vibrational modes of each compound. Vibrational spectra recorded at various states of charge demonstrate the sensitivity of the phosphate anions to the presence of lithium ions and provide insight into the lithium intercalation reactions that occur within these materials. The second objective of this dissertation is to describe new in situ electrochemical cells for Raman and infrared spectroscopy. For example, a relatively cheap in situ Raman cell based on modified coin cells is tested with V2O 5 cathodes. The field of in situ infrared spectroscopy is extended to include transmission experiments. The performance of a new in situ transmission FT-IR spectroelectrochemical cell is tested with FePO4 cathodes, and the results agree very well with ex situ experiments. Both techniques provide new ways to study lithium intercalation for a range of advanced electrode materials

This research compares how the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) prevent the occurrence of and respond to incidents of workplace explosions in their industries. This was a qualitative study that utilized interpretivism as the theoretical framework. The study sought to answer four research questions. (1) What are the explosive hazards present in the coal mining and sugar refining environments? (2) What explosion prevention methodologies are available? (3) What MSHA regulations apply to coal mine explosions and what OSHA regulations apply to refinery explosions? (4) Are there differences in the way that the agencies enforce regulations when faced with a similar catastrophic event

Emerging Leader of the Tax Avant-Garde

    Get PDF
In 1998, Poland\u27s Minister of Finance Leszek Balcerowicz unveiled a plan to restructure the tax system. His fiat tax proposal promises numerous benefits to individual and corporate taxpayers with significant reduction in tax rates for both groups. The new plan offers to further strengthen Poland\u27s growing economy--a consequence that is especially significant in light of the country\u27s aspiration to join the European Union. It provides a remedy for virtually every ailment plaguing the current tax system and, most importantly, the reform offers to finance itself This Note argues that the plan should be adopted immediately for the following reasons: (1) Poland\u27s weak middle class is not likely to oppose it; (2) the danger of harmful consequences to those who rely on the current tax laws is minimal at best; and (3) the reform will send a positive message to the citizens about the country\u27s well-being ten years after its transition to a free-market economy
