Downsizing implementation and financial performance
In the present study we explore the relationship between downsizing decisions and corporate financial
performance after top management has decided to downsize. Our focus is on the financial consequences
arising from the amount of downsizing and the use of disengagement incentives. For this purpose, we use
a sample of downsizing announcements in the Spanish press from 1995 up to 2001. Although the results
show that the amount of downsizing is not significantly related to post-downsizing profitability, the
evidence provided supports the finding that the use of disengagement incentives (which motivate workers
to leave the organization) is negatively related to firm performance. Our analysis helps to understand the
role that strategic downsizing decisions play in explaining observed variance in the performance of
downsized firms. Thus, it advances scholarly organizational research by reinforcing the concept that
corporate performance is not only contingent on strategies, but also influenced by the means through
which these strategies are implemented
Does downsizing improve organizational performance? An analysis of Spanish manufacturing firms
The objective of this study is to examine the effect of downsizing on corporate performance, considering
a sample of manufacturing firms drawn from the Spanish Survey of Business Strategies during the 1993-
2005 period. No significant differences in post-downsizing performance arise between companies which
downsize and those that do not. Likewise, we find that substantial workforce reductions through
collective dismissals do not either lead to improved performance levels. Downsizing, therefore, may not
be a way for managers to increase performance, particularly in a context like the Spanish one, where the
labour market is characterized by a high protection of employees’ rights and substantial contract
termination costs
[EN] According to reference reports from expert agents, the passenger air transport market is
currently in a process of expansion. IATA forecasts are very positive and air traffic could
double in just twenty years. However, there are serious doubts as to whether airlines will
be able to cope with this exponential market growth if they continue following their
current business models. The objective of this project is precisely to provide a detailed
assessment of the situation in which the Spanish market is, from a holistic perspective
(strategic, commercial and financial-accounting points of view). The analysis should be
conducted bearing in mind the extensive and complex regulation of the sector, which in
turn conditions any of the actions taken by agents. With this objective in mind, various
research methodologies have been applied It is worthwhile noting that an expert panel
was consulted and that a customer perception survey was carried out. In addition, for
the analysis of the data, numerous sources from both governmental and relevant
associations have been used, such as ICAO or IATA. On the other hand, market operators
will face numerous challenges in the near future in several areas. Thus, innovation,
environment, competition, fleet management, strategic positioning or globalization are
just some of the main issues that will be on the table in the meetings held by airlines’
Boards of Directors. In any case, there is no doubt that, given the dynamism of the market,
companies will have to make efforts constantly if they want to maintain their position. In
this sense, there are areas of improvement in terms of management efficiency, as well as
market development opportunities, which are still in the design process.[ES] Atendiendo a los informes emitidos por agentes de referencia, el mercado de transporte
SWATH Differential Abundance Proteomics and Cellular Assays Show In Vitro Anticancer Activity of Arachidonic Acid- and Docosahexaenoic Acid-Based Monoacylglycerols in HT-29 Colorectal Cancer Cells
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common and mortal types of cancer. There is increasing evidence that some polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) exercise specific inhibitory actions on cancer cells through different mechanisms, as a previous study on CRC cells demonstrated for two very long-chain PUFA. These were docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n3) and arachidonic acid (ARA, 20:4n6) in the free fatty acid (FFA) form. In this work, similar design and technology have been used to investigate the actions of both DHA and ARA as monoacylglycerol (MAG) molecules, and results have been compared with those obtained using the corresponding FFA. Cell assays revealed that ARA- and DHA-MAG exercised dose- and time-dependent antiproliferative actions, with DHA-MAG acting on cancer cells more efficiently than ARA-MAG. Sequential window acquisition of all theoretical mass spectra (SWATH)—mass spectrometry massive quantitative proteomics, validated by parallel reaction monitoring and followed by pathway analysis, revealed that DHA-MAG had a massive effect in the proteasome complex, while the ARA-MAG main effect was related to DNA replication. Prostaglandin synthesis also resulted as inhibited by DHA-MAG. Results clearly demonstrated the ability of both ARA- and DHA-MAG to induce cell death in colon cancer cells, which suggests a direct relationship between chemical structure and antitumoral actions
Continuous symmetric Sobolev inner products
24 pages, no figures.-- MSC2000 codes: 42C05.MR#: MR1953647 (2003j:42029)Zbl#: Zbl pre05368623In this paper we consider the sequence of monic polynomials (Qn) orthogonal with respect to a symmetric Sobolev inner product. If Q_2n(x)=Pn(x^2) and Q_2n+1(x)=xRn(x^2), then we deduce the integral representation of the inner products such that (Pn) and (Rn) are, respectively, the corresponding sequences of monic orthogonal polynomials. In the semiclassical case, algebraic relations between such sequences are deduced. Finally, an application of the above results to Freud-Sobolev polynomials is given. The work of the second author was partially supported by Dirección General de Investigación (Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología) of Spain under grant BFM 2000-0206-C04-01 and INTAS project INTAS 2000-272.Publicad
Darboux transformation and perturbation of linear functionals
28 pages, no figures.-- MSC2000 codes: 42C05; 15A23.MR#: MR2055354 (2005b:15027)Zbl#: Zbl 1055.42016Let L be a quasi-definite linear functional defined on the linear space of polynomials with real coefficients. In the literature, three canonical transformations of this functional are studied: , and where denotes the linear functional , and is the Kronecker symbol. Let us consider the sequence of monic polynomials orthogonal with respect to L. This sequence satisfies a three-term recurrence relation whose coefficients are the entries of the so-called monic Jacobi matrix. In this paper we show how to find the monic Jacobi matrix associated with the three canonical perturbations in terms of the monic Jacobi matrix associated with L. The main tools are Darboux transformations. In the case that the LU factorization of the monic Jacobi matrix associated with xL does not exist and Darboux transformation does not work, we show how to obtain the monic Jacobi matrix associated with as a limit case. We also study perturbations of the functional L that are obtained by combining the canonical cases. Finally, we present explicit algebraic relations between the polynomials orthogonal with respect to L and orthogonal with respect to the perturbed functionals. The work of the authors has been partially supported by Dirección General de Investigación (Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología) of Spain under grant BFM 2003-06335-C03-02 and NATO collaborative grant PST.CLG.979738.Publicad
