This article positions one episode in the life of the British art critic In Spanish; includes original text in English. John Ruskin as a transition from Romanticism to Modernism in microcosm. Between 1845 and 1849, his textual, artistic and archival practices underwent a complete transformation. His iterative practices of seeing, interpreting and drawing moved away from practices associated with the Picturesque into modes associated with contemporary antiquarianism. His project, to record the details of Venetian architecture in minute detail before they were lost to restoration, forced Ruskin to engage in different ways with concepts he had already begun to explore: notions of truth, life and labour, which would profoundly influence his future role as a self-declared prophet

Entity Personalized Talent Search Models with Tree Interaction Features

Talent Search systems aim to recommend potential candidates who are a good match to the hiring needs of a recruiter expressed in terms of the recruiter's search query or job posting. Past work in this domain has focused on linear and nonlinear models which lack preference personalization in the user-level due to being trained only with globally collected recruiter activity data. In this paper, we propose an entity-personalized Talent Search model which utilizes a combination of generalized linear mixed (GLMix) models and gradient boosted decision tree (GBDT) models, and provides personalized talent recommendations using nonlinear tree interaction features generated by the GBDT. We also present the offline and online system architecture for the productionization of this hybrid model approach in our Talent Search systems. Finally, we provide offline and online experiment results benchmarking our entity-personalized model with tree interaction features, which demonstrate significant improvements in our precision metrics compared to globally trained non-personalized models.Comment: This paper has been accepted for publication at ACM WWW 201

Mathematical Analysis and Simulations of the Neural Circuit for Locomotion in Lamprey

We analyze the dynamics of the neural circuit of the lamprey central pattern generator (CPG). This analysis provides insights into how neural interactions form oscillators and enable spontaneous oscillations in a network of damped oscillators, which were not apparent in previous simulations or abstract phase oscillator models. We also show how the different behaviour regimes (characterized by phase and amplitude relationships between oscillators) of forward/backward swimming, and turning, can be controlled using the neural connection strengths and external inputs.Comment: 4 pages, accepted for publication in Physical Review Letter

Urban Appalachian Festival Proposal

We at COAL think that Appalachian culture has been marginalized by American urban centers and being an Appalachian American comes with many negative stereotypes. This is especially felt right here in the Franklinton neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio. We want to make an impact in the community in a way that lessens stereotypes towards Appalachian Americans and help the city of Columbus be more inclusive towards Appalachian culture. We propose to do this by organizing an Appalachian cultural festival that will both address the specific needs of Franklinton and celebrate its Appalachian roots. The specific issues we wish to address include socioeconomic instability and lack of cultural and community pride within the Franklinton and greater Columbus Area. This festival will feature local foods, music, vendors, adult beverages and education events that will promote Appalachian culture and lifestyles. This will help the residents of Columbus experience a taste of Appalachia and educate on the culture in ways that should help in reducing negative stereotypes and foster an environment of acceptance and inclusion. Strongwater Food and Spirits, a venue located in Franklinton, has already agreed to host the festival. The materials we will need financial support to cover will be the purchase the permits and police detail for the closure of the section of Lucas Street between West Town Street and West Rich Street. We will also need financial support to cover other additional festival related expenses related the festival. We need this financial support because we want this event to be as accessible as possible to the resident of Franklinton and will not be charging an entrance fee. We will only be making money on sales of beer that was donated by local breweries and vendor fees. We do not foresee these limited revenues being able to cover our numerous expenses but this festival would be absolutely beneficial in making Columbus a more inclusive community toward Appalachian Cultures and Lifestyles

Synchronization reveals topological scales in complex networks

We study the relationship between topological scales and dynamic time scales in complex networks. The analysis is based on the full dynamics towards synchronization of a system of coupled oscillators. In the synchronization process, modular structures corresponding to well defined communities of nodes emerge in different time scales, ordered in a hierarchical way. The analysis also provides a useful connection between synchronization dynamics, complex networks topology and spectral graph analysis.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

Content Pluralism

How fine-grained are the contents of our beliefs and other cognitive attitudes? Are the contents of our beliefs individuated solely in terms of the objects, properties, and relations that figure in their truth conditions, or rather in terms of our concepts, or modes of presentation of those objects, properties, and relations? So-called Millians famously maintain the former whereas their Fregean rivals hold the latter. Though much ink was spilled on the question of grain, relatively little was ever achieved by way of consensus. We think the lack of consensus itself cries out for explanation. In this paper, we sketch a pluralist resolution (or, better, a dissolution) of the debate that flows from some extremely minimal commitments regarding the metaphysics of propositions and the attitudinal relations we bear to them. In doing so, we focus on the Act-type conception of propositions of Hanks (2015) and Soames (2010, 2016) and our own (2019) favored deflationary account, Minimalism

The Essence of the Mental

Your belief that Obama is a Democrat wouldn’t be the belief that it is if it didn't represent Obama, nor would the pain in your ankle be the state that is if, say, it felt like an itch. Accordingly, it is tempting to hold that phenomenal and representational properties are essential to the mental states that have them. But, as several theorists have forcefully argued (including Kripke (1980) and Burge (1979, 1982)) this attractive idea is seemingly in tension with another equally attractive thesis, namely, the token-identity thesis; the thesis according to which every mental state token is identical with some or other token physical state. In this paper, we show that these seemingly incontrovertible essentialist intuitions are in fact compatible with ‘token physicalism’ regarding the mental.1 Given a suitably plentitudinous ontology of objects, we argue that there are physical things with which our token mental states can be identified. This is preferable to existing views that give up the essentiality claims or simply reject the token-identity thesis

How To Manage Knee Arthritis: Best Practices for Treatment Prior to Orthopaedic Referral

Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee is a debilitating disease in which degeneration of the joint space cartilage can lead to life-altering pain and stiffness. The prevalence of OA has a strong correlation with age, with evidence of radiographic knee OA found in 37.4% of persons older than 60 years of age. According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s (AHRQ) 2013 report, osteoarthritis was ranked the second most expensive condition for Medicare and private insurers, with over 90% of the hospitalizations for OA involving a knee or hip replacement. It is projected that by 2030 the number of primary total knee arthroplasties will increase by 525% and the number of primary hip arthroplasties by 101%. Proper diagnosis and treatment of all stages of osteoarthritis, is essential to increase value and reduce costs for all stakeholders including patients, physicians and payers. In this article, only the non-operative management of knee OA is discussed. Movements of Two Rabid Raccoons, Procyon lotor, in Eastern Ontario

An adult female Raccoon Procyon lotor was captured about 3 km north of Mallorytown, Ontario, on 27 August 2004, as part of a government rabies control program. The animal was vaccinated against rabies, ear-tagged and released, and recaptured the next day 1.7 km south of the initial capture location. Upon recapture, the Raccoon had porcupine quills in its facial area and seemed agitated and was submitted for rabies testing. It was confirmed as rabies positive on 31 August 2004, by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Similarly, a juvenile male raccoon was captured, ear-tagged, vaccinated, and released near Junetown, Ontario (about 4 km NW of the other rabid Raccoon) on 5 September 2004. It was found dying in a residential window well on 22 September 2004, 700 meters from the original capture location. It was diagnosed as rabid on 23 September 2004
