    Proposal of Strength Formula and Type Development of Composite Mega Column to Beam Connections with T-shaped Stiffener

    [EN] As buildings are becoming larger, demand for mega-sized composite columns (over 1-meter diameter) is increased. We have developed and commercialized welded built-up CFT column (ACT Column I) since 2005 which are structurally stable and economical using cold-formed steel with rib. However, there has a limit in size of cross section (618 X 618mm) by a fabrication facilities. And due to charateristics of closed cross section, there has a limit to construction of connection of moment frame. Composite mega column (ACT Column II) has same concept of forming closed cross section. But in order to enlarge cross sectional size, thick plate is inserted between cold-formed steels. Since composite mega column can control thickness and width of thick plate, steel or composite beams can be directly attached to the connection.     Effects on Weight Reduction and Safety of Short-Term Phentermine Administration in Korean Obese People

    The phentermine, an appetite suppressant, has been widely applied in Korea since 2004. However, there have been relatively few reports about the efficacy and the safety of phentermine in Korea. The aim of this study is to verify the effect of phentermine on weight reduction and the safety in Korean patients. This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study had been performed between February and July, 2005, in Seoul on 68 relatively healthy obese adults whose body mass index was 25 kg/m2 or greater. They received phentermine-HCl 37.5 mg or placebo once daily with behavioral therapy for obesity. The primary endpoints were the changes of body weight and waist circumference from the baseline in the intention-to-treat population. Mean decrease of both body weight and waist circumference in phentermine-treated subjects were significantly greater than that of placebo group (weight: -6.7 ± 2.5 kg, p < 0.001; waist circumference: -6.2 ± 3.5 cm, p < 0.001). Significant number of subjects in phentermine group accomplished weight reduction of 5% or greater from the baseline and 10% or more (p < 0.001). There were no significant differences in systolic and diastolic blood pressure between the groups (p = 0.122 for systolic BP; p = 0.219 for diastolic BP). Dry mouth and insomnia were the only statistically significant adverse events that occurred more frequently in phentermine group. Most side effects of phentermine were mild to moderate in intensity. Short-term phentermine administration induced significant weight reduction and reduction of waist circumference without clinically problematic adverse events on relatively healthy Korean obese people

    Genome-wide association study of lung adenocarcinoma in East Asia and comparison with a European population.

    Lung adenocarcinoma is the most common type of lung cancer. Known risk variants explain only a small fraction of lung adenocarcinoma heritability. Here, we conducted a two-stage genome-wide association study of lung adenocarcinoma of East Asian ancestry (21,658 cases and 150,676 controls; 54.5% never-smokers) and identified 12 novel susceptibility variants, bringing the total number to 28 at 25 independent loci. Transcriptome-wide association analyses together with colocalization studies using a Taiwanese lung expression quantitative trait loci dataset (n = 115) identified novel candidate genes, including FADS1 at 11q12 and ELF5 at 11p13. In a multi-ancestry meta-analysis of East Asian and European studies, four loci were identified at 2p11, 4q32, 16q23, and 18q12. At the same time, most of our findings in East Asian populations showed no evidence of association in European populations. In our studies drawn from East Asian populations, a polygenic risk score based on the 25 loci had a stronger association in never-smokers vs. individuals with a history of smoking (Pinteraction = 0.0058). These findings provide new insights into the etiology of lung adenocarcinoma in individuals from East Asian populations, which could be important in developing translational applications

    Using the Himawari-8 AHI Multi-Channel to Improve the Calculation Accuracy of Outgoing Longwave Radiation at the Top of the Atmosphere

    In this study, Himawari-8 Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) longwave channel data that is sensitive to clouds and absorption gas were used to improve the accuracy of the algorithm used to calculate outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) at the top of the atmosphere. A radiative transfer model with a variety of atmospheric conditions was run using Garand vertical profile data as input data. The results of the simulation showed that changes in AHI channels 8, 12, 15, and 16, which were used to calculate OLR, were sensitive to changes in cloud characteristics (cloud optical thickness and cloud height) and absorption gases (water vapor, O3, CO2, aerosol optical thickness) in the atmosphere. When compared to long-term analysis OLR data from 2017, as recorded by the Cloud and Earth&rsquo;s Radiant Energy System (CERES), the OLR calculated in this study had an annual mean bias of 2.28 Wm&minus;2 and a root mean square error (RMSE) of 11.03 Wm&minus;2. The new calculation method mitigated the problem of overestimations in OLR in mostly cloudy and overcast regions and underestimated OLR in cloud-free desert regions. It is also an improvement over the result from the existing OLR calculation algorithm, which uses window and water vapor channels

    Radiation Component Calculation and Energy Budget Analysis for the Korean Peninsula Region

    In this study, a radiation component calculation algorithm was developed using channel data from the Himawari-8 Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) and meteorological data from the Unified Model (UM) Local Data Assimilation and Prediction System (LDAPS). In addition, the energy budget of the Korean Peninsula region in 2016 was calculated and its regional differences were analyzed. Radiation components derived using the algorithm were calibrated using the broadband radiation component data from the Clouds and the Earth&rsquo;s Radiant Energy System (CERES) to improve their accuracy. The calculated radiation components and the CERES data showed an annual mean percent bias of less than 3.5% and a high correlation coefficient of over 0.98. The energy budget of the Korean Peninsula region was &minus;2.4 Wm&minus;2 at the top of the atmosphere (RT), &minus;14.5 Wm&minus;2 at the surface (RS), and 12.1 Wm&minus;2 in the atmosphere (RA), with regional energy budget differences. The Seoul region had a high surface temperature (289.5 K) and a RS of &minus;33.4 Wm&minus;2 (surface emission), whereas the Sokcho region had a low surface temperature (284.7 K) and a RS of 5.0 Wm&minus;2 (surface absorption), for a difference of 38.5 Wm&minus;2. In short, regions with relatively high surface temperatures tended to show energy emission, and regions with relatively low surface temperatures tended to show energy absorption. Such regional energy imbalances can cause weather and climate changes and bring about meteorological disasters, and thus research on detecting energy budget changes must be continued

    Stability of the Natural Joint Side in Unilateral Alloplastic Total Temporomandibular Joint Replacement Using a Ready-Made System

    An alloplastic total joint replacement (TJR) is an effective and reliable treatment option in non-salvageable end-stage temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disease. However, unilateral alloplastic TJR of the TMJ (TMJ TJR) could affect the other side natural joint because the physiologic action of both condyles is quite different during mandibular movement. In this study, we examined whether the unilaterally replaced alloplastic TMJ TJR affects the other side natural joint condition over long periods of time. Eight patients who received alloplastic TJR on one side were subjects in this study. All alloplastic TJR implants were stable in situ. The average maximum mouth opening was 37.5 mm (range 19–49 mm) pre-operatively and 44.1 mm (range 34–57 mm) post-operatively. This parameter gradually increased and reached the maximum at about twelve months after surgery. The post-operative change of pain level was significantly reduced from 3.5 to 0 on a pain scale of zero to ten. No significant complications in any joints were observed within the follow-up period. The shape of the natural joint sides showed slight changes but were functionally stable during the observation period. In this study, unilateral alloplastic TJR showed stable and reliable clinical results, either alloplastic TJR or healthy joint sides for quite long period of time

    The effect of differentiation stage of amniotic fluid stem cells on bone regeneration

    Bone tissue engineering strategies require cells with high proliferative and osteogenic potential as well as a suitable scaffold to support the development of these as they form new bone tissue. In this study, we evaluated whether the differentiation stage of amniotic fluid stem cells (AFSC) could enhance the regeneration of critical sized femoral defects in a rat model. For this purpose, AFSC were seeded onto a starch-poly(!-caprolactone) (SPCL) scaffold and were cultured in vitro in osteogenic culture media for different periods of time in order to obtain: i) undifferentiated cells, ii) cells committed to the osteogenic phenotype and iii) “osteoblast-like” cells. In vitro results indicate that AFSC were considered to be osteogenically committed by the end of week 2 and osteoblastic-like after week 3 in culture. Constructs composed of AFSC-SPCL scaffolds from each differentiation stage were implanted into critical sized femoral defects. The quality of new tissue formed in the defects was evaluated based on micro-CT imaging and histological analysis of constructs retrieved at 4 and 16 weeks after implantation. In vivo formation of new bone was observed under all conditions. However, the most complete repair of the defect was observed after 16 weeks in the animals receiving the SPCL scaffolds seeded with osteogenically committed AFSC. Furthermore, the presence of blood vessels was noted in the inner sections of the scaffolds suggests that these cells could potentially be used to induce bone regeneration and angiogenesis in non-union bone defects.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT
