Middle schools: a sociological interpretation of their development and practice
Middle schools as separate and distinct institutions are still a relatively recent feature in the maintained school system in England. This new category of schools is not a homogeneous one. The two main types of middle school tater for pupils aged either 8 - 12 or 9 - 13 years, but there are other variants whose pupils are in the age range 9 - 12, 10 - 13 and 10 - 14 years. Administratively middle schools are 'deemed' either primary or secondary.
First, this study sets out to analyse the development of middle schools in England within the context of comprehensive secondary school re-organisation. Then the decision to adopt middle schools of different types in two L.E.A.'s is examined in some detail. The intention is to explore how far decision making at the L.E.A. level about the form of school systems illustrates the considerations which appear to operate at the level of central government. In the second part, aspects of life in two specific middle schools are explored from the points of view of teachers and pupils. Again the intention is to explore how far and in what ways issues relating to middle school planning at the central and local government level make their impact in particular schools. The central theme throughout this study is the degree of congruence between the rhetoric used to legitimate middle schools and the reality experienced within them.
The problem of linking 'macro' and 'micro' levels of analysis is a familiar and persistent one in the sociology of education. In this study a theoretical synthesis to link decisions made about middle schools at central, government, local education authority and school ,level is made by way of an adaptation of exchange theory. It is suggested that this theoretical stance both clarifies and illuminates the data presented in the thesis and provides a framework in which future middle school developments can be located and interpreted
CodeVA Elementary Coaches Academy : Impact of Computer Science Implementation in K-5
Abstract
This study investigated the impact of CodeVA’s elementary coach’s academy (ECA) on computer science implementation in elementary schools across the state of Virginia. The research took a multimethod qualitative and quantitative approach through surveys, focus groups, interviews and observations of ECA coaches and participants, along with the analysis of historical data provided by CodeVA. The capstone research questions were: “What is the impact of the elementary coaches academy?” and “What impacts the effectiveness of CodeVA’s elementary coaches academy?” In general, the data collected suggested that CodeVA has been effective in reaching its intended audience and meeting the needs of cohort participants, but there is still room for improvement. The review of the data resulted in five overarching anchors being identified that produced the following recommendations: “ use evidenced based coaching models to increase impact”; “utilize adult learning principles to create specific professional development”; “create a more structured professional learning community for ECA”; “improve advanced communication of ECA professional development opportunities” and “create a cache of resources to improve outside access to information for facilitators and coaches of the ECA”

MicroRNA regulation of bovine monocyte inflammatory and metabolic networks in an in vivo infection model.
peer-reviewedBovine mastitis is an inflammation-driven disease of the bovine mammary gland that costs the global dairy industry several billion dollars per annum. Because disease susceptibility is a multi-factorial complex phenotype, an integrative biology approach is required to dissect the molecular networks involved. Here, we report such an approach, using next generation sequencing combined with advanced network and pathway biology methods to simultaneously profile mRNA and miRNA expression at multiple time-points (0, 12, 24, 36 and 48h) in both milk and blood FACS-isolated CD14+ monocytes from animals infected in vivo with Streptococcus uberis. More than 3,700 differentially expressed (DE) genes were identified in milk-isolated monocytes (MIMs), a key immune cell recruited to the site of infection during mastitis. Up-regulated genes were significantly enriched for inflammatory pathways, while down-regulated genes were enriched for non-glycolytic metabolic pathways. Monocyte transcriptional changes in the blood, however, were more subtle but highlighted the impact of this infection systemically. Genes up-regulated in blood-isolated-monocytes (BIMs) showed a significant association with interferon and chemokine signalling. Furthermore, twenty-six miRNAs were differentially expressed in MIMs and three in BIMs. Pathway analysis revealed that predicted targets of down-regulated miRNAs were highly enriched for roles in innate immunity (FDR < 3.4E-8) in particular TLR signalling, while up-regulated miRNAs preferentially targeted genes involved in metabolism. We conclude that during S. uberis infection miRNAs are key amplifiers of monocyte inflammatory response networks and repressors of several metabolic pathways.This study was funded in part by Teagasc RMIS 6018 and United States Department of Agriculture ARS funding 3625-32000-102-00. Field responsive mechanical metamaterials.
Typically, mechanical metamaterial properties are programmed and set when the architecture is designed and constructed, and do not change in response to shifting environmental conditions or application requirements. We present a new class of architected materials called field responsive mechanical metamaterials (FRMMs) that exhibit dynamic control and on-the-fly tunability enabled by careful design and selection of both material composition and architecture. To demonstrate the FRMM concept, we print complex structures composed of polymeric tubes infilled with magnetorheological fluid suspensions. Modulating remotely applied magnetic fields results in rapid, reversible, and sizable changes of the effective stiffness of our metamaterial motifs
Post-Transcriptional Dysregulation by miRNAs Is Implicated in the Pathogenesis of Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor [GIST]
peer-reviewedIn contrast to adult mutant gastrointestinal stromal tumors [GISTs], pediatric/wild-type GISTs remain poorly understood
overall, given their lack of oncogenic activating tyrosine kinase mutations. These GISTs, with a predilection for gastric origin
in female patients, show limited response to therapy with tyrosine kinase inhibitors and generally pursue a more indolent
course, but still may prove fatal. Defective cellular respiration appears to underpin tumor development in these wild-type
cases, which as a group lack expression of succinate dehydrogenase [SDH] B, a surrogate marker for respiratory chain
metabolism. Yet, only a small subset of the wild-type tumors show mutations in the genes coding for the SDH subunits
[SDHx]. To explore additional pathogenetic mechanisms in these wild-type GISTs, we elected to investigate posttranscriptional
regulation of these tumors by conducting microRNA (miRNA) profiling of a mixed cohort of 73 cases
including 18 gastric pediatric wild-type, 25 (20 gastric, 4 small bowel and 1 retroperitoneal) adult wild-type GISTs and 30
gastric adult mutant GISTs. By this approach we have identified distinct signatures for GIST subtypes which correlate tightly
with clinico-pathological parameters. A cluster of miRNAs on 14q32 show strikingly different expression patterns amongst
GISTs, a finding which appears to be explained at least in part by differential allelic methylation of this imprinted region.
Small bowel and retroperitoneal wild-type GISTs segregate with adult mutant GISTs and express SDHB, while adult wildtype
gastric GISTs are dispersed amongst adult mutant and pediatric wild-type cases, clustering in this situation on the basis
of SDHB expression. Interestingly, global methylation analysis has recently similarly demonstrated that these wild-type,
SDHB-immunonegative tumors show a distinct pattern compared with KIT and PDGFRA mutant tumors, which as a rule do

Fibroblast Growth Factor–23 and Cardiac Structure and Function
Background: Fibroblast growth factor–23 (FGF‐23) is a phosphaturic factor previously associated with left ventricular hypertrophy and systolic dysfunction among individuals with chronic kidney disease. Whether FGF‐23 acts directly to induce left ventricular hypertrophy, potentially independent of its klotho coreceptor, remains uncertain. We investigated associations of FGF‐23 with cardiac structural abnormalities among individuals with a broad range of kidney function and explored potential biological mechanisms using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging and histology in klotho‐null mice, an established model of constitutively elevated FGF‐23. Methods and Results: Among 887 participants with coronary artery disease in the Heart and Soul Study, FGF‐23 was modestly associated with worse left ventricular ejection fraction (−1.0% per standard deviation increase in lnFGF‐23; standard error, 0.4%), but was not associated with the overall prevalence of concentric hypertrophy (odds ratio, 1.5; CI, 0.9 to 2.4) or eccentric hypertrophy (odds ratio, 1.1; CI, 0.9 to 1.3). FGF‐23 was only associated with concentric hypertrophy among individuals with diminished kidney function (eGFR <60 mL/min per 1.73 m2; odds ratio, 2.3; CI, 1.0 to 5.3; P‐interaction=0.28). Comparing klotho‐null with wild‐type mice, null mice did not have greater left ventricular mass (P=0.37) or a lower ejection fraction (P=0.94). Conclusions: Together, our results suggest that FGF‐23 is unlikely to have major effects on cardiovascular structure and function among patients free of substantial chronic kidney disease, and these effects may not be independent of the klotho coreceptor
Mechanically-Deployed Hypersonic Decelerator and Conformal Ablator Technologies for Mars Missions
The concept of a mechanically deployable hypersonic decelerator, developed initially for high mass (~40 MT) human Mars missions, is currently funded by OCT for technology maturation. The ADEPT (Adaptive, Deployable Entry and Placement Technology) project has broad, game-changing applicability to in situ science missions to Venus, Mars, and the Outer Planets. Combined with maturation of conformal ablator technology (another current OCT investment), the two technologies provide unique low mass mission enabling capabilities otherwise not achievable by current rigid aeroshell or by inflatables. If this abstract is accepted, we will present results that illustrate the mission enabling capabilities of the mechanically deployable architecture for: (1) robotic Mars (Discovery or New Frontiers class) in the near term; (2) alternate approaches to landing MSL-class payloads, without the need for supersonic parachute or lifting entry, in the mid-term; and (3) Heavy mass and human missions to Mars in the long term
