Abstract. The present paper arose from the publication of a new law on the promotion of tourism in Italy. It focuses on the image of the Lakes area in the Swiss– Italian border region–a traditional tourist area-as conveyed by the various regional tourist agencies through their information brochures and leaflets. The two «myths» appearing most frequently are the mediterranean character and the natural features of the region in question. The Swiss promotors also emphasize sports activities and the cultural heritage, two elements of the image which are particulary efficient components of the image. The analysis of the brochures and leaflets reveals that the different tourist agencies ought to coordinate their information activities more fully in order to create an integrated image of the region. This in turn could help to better exploit the tourist potential of the region

The weak ring of the chain: Immigrants facing the economic crisis in Italy

The article offers a synthetic overview of the main effects that the international economic crisis has had on immigrants in Italy. After a brief introductory explanation of the main characteristics of the Italian context of immigration, the authors concentrate on two main problems: the immigrants\u2019 access to the labour market and to the housing system. The so-called \u201csocial vulnerability\u201d of migrants was increased by the tensions related to the economic crisis. The growing problems that immigrants have been facing in the last three years are linked to the territorial distribution and to the mobility of the migrant communities on the national territory. The tendency to a progressive redistribution of the migratory destinations and to an increased mobility within and outside the Italian national borders are among the consequences of the socio-economic difficulties suffered by migrants. Finally, a few conclusive remarks suggest some policy recommendations

The high-redshift Universe with the International X-ray Observatory

We discuss some of the main open issues related to the light-up and evolution of the first accreting sources powering high redshift luminous quasars. We discuss the perspectives of future deep X-ray surveys with the International X-ray Observatory and possible synergies with the Wide Field X-ray Telescope.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures. The clustering properties of radio-selected AGN and star-forming galaxies up to redshifts z~3

We present the clustering properties of a complete sample of 968 radio sources detected at 1.4 GHz by the VLA-COSMOS survey with radio fluxes brighter than 0.15 mJy. 92% have redshift determinations from the Laigle et al. (2016) catalogue. Based on their radio-luminosity, these objects have been divided into two populations of 644 AGN and 247 star-forming galaxies. By fixing the slope of the auto-correlation function to gamma=2, we find r_0=11.7^{+1.0}_{-1.1} Mpc for the clustering length of the whole sample, while r_0=11.2^{+2.5}_{-3.3} Mpc and r_0=7.8^{+1.6}_{-2.1} Mpc (r_0=6.8^{+1.4}_{-1.8} Mpc if we restrict our analysis to z<0.9) are respectively obtained for AGN and star-forming galaxies. These values correspond to minimum masses for dark matter haloes of M_min=10^[13.6^{+0.3}_{-0.6}] M_sun for radio-selected AGN and M_min=10^[13.1^{+0.4}_{-1.6}] M_sun for radio-emitting star-forming galaxies (M_min=10^[12.7^{+0.7}_{-2.2}] M_sun for z<0.9). Comparisons with previous works imply an independence of the clustering properties of the AGN population with respect to both radio luminosity and redshift. We also investigate the relationship between dark and luminous matter in both populations. We obtain /M_halo/M_halo<~10^{-2.4} in the case of star-forming galaxies. Furthermore, if we restrict to z<~0.9 star-forming galaxies, we derive /M_halo<~10^{-2.1}, result which clearly indicates the cosmic process of stellar build-up as one moves towards the more local universe. Comparisons between the observed space density of radio-selected AGN and that of dark matter haloes shows that about one in two haloes is associated with a black hole in its radio-active phase. This suggests that the radio-active phase is a recurrent phenomenon.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, minor changes to match published version on MNRA

Bearing Health Monitoring Based on the Orthogonal Empirical Mode Decomposition

    Get PDF
Bearing is a crucial component of industrial equipment, since any fault occurring in this system usually affects the functionality of the whole machine. To manage this problem, some currently available technologies enable the remote prognosis and diagnosis of bearings, before that faults compromise the system function and safety, respectively. A system for the in-service monitoring of bearing, to detect any inner fault or damage of components and material, allows preventing undesired machine stops. Moreover, it even helps in performing an out-monitoring action, aimed at revealing any anomalous behaviour of the system hosting bearings, through their dynamic response. The in-monitoring can be based on the vibration signal measurement and exploited to detect the presence of defects in material. In this paper, the orthogonal empirical mode decomposition is analysed and tested to investigate how it could be effectively exploited in a lean in-service monitoring operation and remote diagnosis. The proposed approach is validated on a test rig, where an elementary power transmission line was set up. The activity highlights some main properties and practical issues of the technological implementation, as well as the precision of the Orthogonal Empirical Mode Decomposition, as a compact approach for an effective detection of bearing faults in operation
