Supposed trans-Atlantic migration of Heterostegina around the Eocene/Oligocene boundary
According to our hypothesis, Heterostegina ocalana migrated eastward through the previously much narrower Atlantic Ocean around the Eocene/Oligocene boundary. Sporadic populations of H. n. sp., its phylogenetic successor, survived in the western part of the Neotethys until the end of the Rupelian, when they became extinct
Social Security Reforms, Retirement and Sectoral Decisions
In many countries, the regulations governing public and private pension systems, hiring procedures, and job contracts differ. Public sector employees tend to have longer tenures and higher wages compared to workers in the private sector. As such, social security reforms can affect both retirement decisions and sectoral choices. We study the effects of social security reforms on retirement and sectoral behavior in an economy with multiple pension systems. We develop a life-cycle model with three sectors - private formal, private informal and public - and endogenous retirement. In a model calibrated to Brazil, we quantitatively assess the long-run effects of reforms being discussed and implemented across countries. Among them, we study the unification of pension systems and increasing the minimum retirement age. We find that these reforms affect the decision to apply to a public job, the profile of savings over the life cycle, and informality. In the long run, these reforms lead to higher output and capital, reduced informality, and average welfare gains. They also drastically reduce the social security deficit

NaSCN, KCH3COO, CaCl2, [BMIM][Cl] e [EMIM][triflate].
do azeótropo.
Δy=0.048 e ΔT=0.879 K.

Aiming to contribute for a better knowledge of extractive distillation processes using non-volatile solutes, in this work the effect of a salt or an ionic liquid in the vapor-liquid equilibrium of some relevant mixtures in chemical industry such as ethanol + water, 1-propanol + water, 2-propanol + water, acetone + methanol, methyl acetate + methanol and chloroform + ethanol, was studied. The set of selected non-volatile solutes includes Ca(NO3)2, CuCl2, NaI, KI, LiNO3, LiCl, NaSCN, CH3COOK, CaCl2, [BMIM][Cl] and [EMIM][triflate]. The modified Wilson and NRTL models, which are thermodynamic methods of predictive character, are used to calculate the vapor-liquid equilibrium diagrams. In the case of adding a salt to a binary solvent mixture, it can be seen that, in general, both models can predict qualitatively the azeotrope displacement. For the modified Wilson model, the average absolute errors for the vapor phase composition ∆y = 0.049 and temperature ∆T = 1.17 oC were obtained. For the modified NRTL model the correspondent values are; ∆y = 0.048 e ∆T = 0.88 oC. For the systems containing two solvents and an ionic liquid, both models describe unsatisfactorily the vapor-liquid equilibrium of the two ternary systems studied in this work (ethanol + water + [BMIM][Cl]; 1-propanol + water + [EMIM][triflate]). Further studies are needed in order to extend these methodologies to a wider set of systems containing ionic liquids. However, these models are valuable prediction tools for the vapor-liquid equilibrium description of solvent mixtures containing salts. Carotid Intern Aneurysms
Cerebral aneurysms (CA) are acquired lesions, affecting 5–10% of the population, being about three times more common in women than in men. The absolute majority of CA is asymptomatic. However, in symptomatic cases, cerebral aneurysms present without about 80% of cases with severe intracranial hemorrhage, with mortality up to 50% and severe morbidity of up to 80%. At this point, the carotid siphon is particularly important because it is the blood gateway to the anterior cerebral circulation, being the most sinuous portion of the internal carotid artery, and because it houses about 30% of the intracranial aneurysm. The constant interactions of blood flow with carotid siphon curvatures are apparently intrinsically related to the epidemiology of these lesions in the various locations of the intracranial circulation and their presentation form. It is well established that a greater anterior knee angle has a significant independent relation with intracranial aneurysms located after carotid siphon, larger aneurysms, and greater risk of rupture. These findings may be associated with the hemodynamic interactions of blood flow and the curvature of carotid siphon. Little is known about the anatomical changes in carotid siphon and, consequently, the repercussions of the hemodynamic changes that the neurosurgical interventions mechanisms could entail. Devices such as intracranial stents, detachable coils, and even clips of aneurysms can modify the morphology of carotid siphon, and the knowledge of these consequences could be used to obtain better therapeutic results. In the last 10 years, a new device for the treatment of intracranial aneurysms has been presenting promising results, flow diverters stents (FDS), and its use to treat aneurysms in carotid siphon appears to cause morphological changes characterized by increased anterior and posterior angles. Specifically, the anterior angle increase was associated with better angiographic results. Aneurysms of the extracranial carotid artery (ECAA) are rare and little is known about its natural history. The etiology is diverse and most ECAA are asymptomatic, but they may progress to a pulsatile mass, cranial nerve compression, or cause a stroke. ECAA treatment is still controversial and a better insight into natural history and risk of complications of the different treatments is needed in order to get the consensus
A computational framework to simulate the endolymph flow due to vestibular rehabilitation maneuvers assessed from accelerometer data
Vertiginous symptoms are one of the most common symptoms in the world, therefore investing in new ways and therapies to avoid the sense of insecurity during the vertigo episodes is of great interest. The classical maneuvers used during vestibular rehabilitation consist in moving the head in specific ways, but it is not fully understood why those steps solve the problem. To better understand this mechanism, a three-dimensional computational model of the semicircular ducts of the inner ear was built using the finite element method, with the simulation of the fluid flow being obtained using particle methods. To simulate the exact movements performed during rehabilitation, data from an accelerometer were used as input for the boundary conditions in the model. It is shown that the developed model responds to the input data as expected, and the results successfully show the fluid flow of the endolymph behaving coherently as a function of accelerometer data. Numerical results at specific time steps are compared with the corresponding head movement, and both particle velocity and position follow the pattern that would be expected, confirming that the model is working as expected. The vestibular model built is an important starting point to simulate the classical maneuvers of the vestibular rehabilitation allowing to understand what happens in the endolymph during the rehabilitation process, which ultimately may be used to improve the maneuvers and the quality of life of patients suffering from vertigo.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
