    Global Dynamics of Subsurface Solar Active Regions

    We present three-dimensional numerical simulations of a magnetic loop evolving in either a convectively stable or unstable rotating shell. The magnetic loop is introduced in the shell in such a way that it is buoyant only in a certain portion in longitude, thus creating an \Omega-loop. Due to the action of magnetic buoyancy, the loop rises and develops asymmetries between its leading and following legs, creating emerging bipolar regions whose characteristics are similar to the ones of observed spots at the solar surface. In particular, we self-consistently reproduce the creation of tongues around the spot polarities, which can be strongly affected by convection. We moreover emphasize the presence of ring-shaped magnetic structures around our simulated emerging regions, which we call "magnetic necklace" and which were seen in a number of observations without being reported as of today. We show that those necklaces are markers of vorticity generation at the periphery and below the rising magnetic loop. We also find that the asymmetry between the two legs of the loop is crucially dependent on the initial magnetic field strength. The tilt angle of the emerging regions is also studied in the stable and unstable cases and seems to be affected both by the convective motions and the presence of a differential rotation in the convective cases.Comment: 23 pages (ApJ 2-column format), 19 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    Impingement of Water Droplets on an Ellipsoid with Fineness Ratio 5 in Axisymmetric Flow

    The presence of radomes and instruments that are sensitive to water films or ice formations in the nose section of all-weather aircraft and missiles necessitates a knowledge of the droplet impingement characteristics of bodies of revolution. Because it is possible to approximate many of these bodies with an ellipsoid of revolution, droplet trajectories about an ellipsoid of revolution with a fineness ratio of 5 were computed for incompressible axisymmetric air flow. From the computed droplet trajectories, the following impingement characteristics of the ellipsoid surface were obtained and are presented in terms of dimensionless parameters: (1) total rate of water impingement, (2) extent of droplet impingement zone, (3) distribution of impinging water, and (4) local rate of water impingement

    Lost in Translation: The Economic Analysis of Law in the United States and Europe

    In this Essay, we examine the reasons why the economic analysis of law has not flourished in European countries as it has in the United States. In particular, we focus on three European countries-the United Kingdom, Germany, and France. We argue that differences in culture, the legal system, and the academy have led to differing degrees of success of the law and economics movement in each country. We speculate that, although there is currently less interest in the economic analysis of the law in Europe than in the United States, European interest could dramatically increase if scholars adopt more communitarian analyses aimed at analyzing legislative polices rather than judicial decisions

    The strange case of negative reflection

    In this paper, we show the phenomenon of negative reflection occurring in a mechanical phononic structure, consisting of a grating of fixed inclusions embedded in a linear elastic matrix. The negative reflection is not due to the introduction of a subwavelength metastructure or materials with negative mechanical properties. Numerical analyses for out-of-plane shear waves demonstrate that there exist frequencies at which most of the incident energy is reflected at negative angles. The effect is symmetric with respect to a line that is not parallel to the normal direction to the grating structure. Simulations at different angles of incidence and computations of the energy fluxes show that negative reflection is achievable in a wide range of loading conditions

    Damped Lyman alpha Absorbing Galaxies At Low Redshifts z<1 From Hierarchical Galaxy Formation Models

    We investigate Damped Ly-alpha absorbing galaxies (DLA galaxies) at low redshifts z<1 in the hierarchical structure formation scenario to clarify the nature of DLA galaxies because observational data of such galaxies mainly at low redshifts are currently available. We find that our model well reproduces distributions of fundamental properties of DLA galaxies such as luminosities, column densities, impact parameters obtained by optical and near-infrared imagings. Our results suggest that DLA systems primarily consist of low luminosity galaxies with small impact parameters (typical radius about 3 kpc, surface brightness from 22 to 27 mag arcsec^{-2}) similar to low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies. In addition, we investigate selection biases arising from the faintness and from the masking effect which prevents us from identifying a DLA galaxy hidden or contaminated by a point spread function of a background quasar. We find that the latter affects the distributions of DLA properties more seriously rather than the former, and that the observational data are well reproduced only when taking into account the masking effect. The missing rate of DLA galaxies by the masking effect attains 60-90 % in the sample at redshift 0<z<1 when an angular size limit is as small as 1 arcsec. Furthermore we find a tight correlation between HI mass and cross section of DLA galaxies, and also find that HI-rich galaxies with M(HI) \sim 10^{9} M_sun dominate DLA systems. These features are entirely consistent with those from the Arecibo Dual-Beam Survey which is a blind 21 cm survey. Finally we discuss star formation rates, and find that they are typically about 10^{-2} M_sun yr^{-1} as low as those in LSB galaxies.Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures, Accepted for publication in Astrophsical Journa

    Post-transcriptional regulatory patterns revealed by protein-RNA interactions

    The coordination of the synthesis of functionally-related proteins can be achieved at the post-transcriptional level by the action of common regulatory molecules, such as RNA–binding proteins (RBPs). Despite advances in the genome-wide identification of RBPs and their binding transcripts, the protein–RNA interaction space is still largely unexplored, thus hindering a broader understanding of the extent of the post-transcriptional regulation of related coding RNAs. Here, we propose a computational approach that combines protein–mRNA interaction networks and statistical analyses to provide an inferred regulatory landscape for more than 800 human RBPs and identify the cellular processes that can be regulated at the post-transcriptional level. We show that 10% of the tested sets of functionally-related mRNAs can be post-transcriptionally regulated. Moreover, we propose a classification of (i) the RBPs and (ii) the functionally-related mRNAs, based on their distinct behaviors in the functional landscape, hinting towards mechanistic regulatory hypotheses. In addition, we demonstrate the usefulness of the inferred functional landscape to investigate the cellular role of both well-characterized and novel RBPs in the context of human diseases

    PyPore3D: An Open Source Software Tool for Imaging Data Processing and Analysis of Porous and Multiphase Media

    n this work, we propose the software library PyPore3D, an open source solution for data processing of large 3D/4D tomographic data sets. PyPore3D is based on the Pore3D core library, developed thanks to the collaboration between Elettra Sincrotrone (Trieste) and the University of Trieste (Italy). The Pore3D core library is built with a distinction between the User Interface and the backend filtering, segmentation, morphological processing, skeletonisation and analysis functions. The current Pore3D version relies on the closed source IDL framework to call the backend functions and enables simple scripting procedures for streamlined data processing. PyPore3D addresses this limitation by proposing a full open source solution which provides Python wrappers to the the Pore3D C library functions. The PyPore3D library allows the users to fully use the Pore3D Core Library as an open source solution under Python and Jupyter Notebooks PyPore3D is both getting rid of all the intrinsic limitations of licensed platforms (e.g., closed source and export restrictions) and adding, when needed, the flexibility of being able to integrate scientific libraries available for Python (SciPy, TensorFlow, etc.)

    Cosmic Histories of Stars, Gas, Heavy Elements, and Dust

    We present a set of coupled equations that relate the stellar, gaseous, chemical, and radiation constituents of the universe averaged over the whole galaxy population. Using as input the available data from quasar absorption-line surveys, optical imaging and redshift surveys, and the COBE DIRBE and FIRAS extragalactic infrared background measurements, we obtain solutions for the cosmic histories of stars, interstellar gas, heavy elements, dust, and radiation from stars and dust in galaxies. Our solutions reproduce remarkably well a wide variety of observations that were not used as input, including the integrated background light from galaxy counts, the optical and near-infrared emissivities from galaxy surveys, the local infrared emissivities from the IRAS survey, the mean abundance of heavy elements from surveys of damped Lyman-alpha systems, and the global star formation rates from Hα\alpha surveys and submillimeter observations. The solutions presented here suggest that the process of galaxy formation appears to have undergone an early period of substantial inflow to assemble interstellar gas at z3z\gtrsim3, a subsequent period of intense star formation and chemical enrichment at 1z31\lesssim z\lesssim3, and a recent period of rapid decline in the gas content, star formation rate, optical stellar emissivity, and infrared dust emission at z1z\lesssim1.     Transforming growth factor-β/Smad - signalling pathway and conjunctival remodelling in vernal keratoconjunctivitis

    Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a chronic ocular allergic inflammation characterized by corneal complications and the formation of giant papillae. Sma- and Mad-related proteins (Smad) modulate extracellular matrix gene expression during wound healing, inflammation and tissue remodelling.Objective To investigate the relationship between allergic inflammation and TGF-β/Smad signalling pathway, expression in VKC patients and in primary cultured conjunctival fibroblasts exposed to mediators found previously over-expressed in VKC.Methods Smad-2, -3, -7, phospho-(p)Smads, TGF-β1 and -β2 were evaluated in the conjunctiva of normal subjects (CT) and VKC patients by immunohistochemistry. The expression of Smads, pro-collagen I (PIP), TGF-β1, -β2, mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38/MAPK), c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK1/2) were also determined in conjunctival fibroblast cultures exposed to histamine, IL-4, -13, TGF-β1, IFN-γ and TNF-α using immunostaining or RT-PCR.Results Immunostaining for Smad-2, -3, pSmad-2, -3, TGF-β1, -β2 and PIP was significantly increased in VKC stroma compared with CT. In conjunctival fibroblast cultures, Smad-3 and PIP were stimulated by histamine, IL-4, -13 and TGF-β1 exposure, while PIP was reduced by IFN-γ, and TNF-α mRNA expression of Smad-3 was increased by histamine, while Smad-7 was reduced by IL-4. In addition, histamine, IL-4 and TNF-α increased JNK and ERK1/2 expression.Conclusion and Clinical Relevance The TGF-β/Smad signalling pathway is over-expressed in VKC tissues and modulated in conjunctival fibroblasts by histamine, IL-4, TGF-β1 and TNF-α. These mechanisms may be involved in fibrillar collagen production, giant papillae formation and tissue remodelling typical of VKC and might provide new therapeutic targets for its treatment. © 2010 Blackwell Publishing Ltd
