    La habilidad en el cálculo en los adultos con síndrome de Down es una cuestión de calidad de vida

    Se acepta ampliamente que la capacidad para calcular resulta crítica en el mundo de los adultos de la comunidad general, y que ese es el caso igualmente para los que tienen síndrome de Down. Este trabajo informa sobre algunos de los resultados de un estudio que plantea esta pregunta objeto de investigación: ¿Cuál es la justificación para el desarrollo de la capacidad de calcular en los adultos con síndrome de Down? La investigación sobre esta pregunta nos condujo hacia la búsqueda de un marco que sirviera de base al desarrollo permanente de la capacidad de calcular. La investigación se realizó por el método de estudio de casos. Se observó e investigó a cinco adultos con síndrome de Down, en dos situaciones distintas para cada uno. Se analizaron los datos para identificar las conexiones que tenían en relación con el modelo de calidad de vida. El estudio ilustra cómo se puede utilizar este enfoque de la calidad de vida para justificar y guiar el desarrollo de la capacidad para el cálculo a lo largo de la vida. Los datos obtenidos en el estudio de los casos enlazaron la capacidad para el cálculo con la calidad de vida en los principios de los contextos personales, la variabilidad, las perspectivas a lo largo de la vida, los valores, las elecciones y el control personal, las percepciones y la autoimagen. Se concluye que los principios de la calidad de vida pueden proporcionar un marco para el desarrollo de la capacidad de cálculo en el contexto de la edad adulta de las personas con síndrome de Down. Prepararlas para que cubran las necesidades de utilización del cálculo en una adultez larga y satisfactoria significa que ha de iniciarse pronto en la niñez, proseguir en la etapa escolar mediante la enseñanza de los correspondientes conceptos y habilidades aritméticas, y ser modificado y refinado a lo largo de la vida adulta mediante la utilización de un plan que desarrolle esa capacidad para utilizar los números. En esta empresa los cuidadores y los profesionales han de adoptar su papel de profesores en interacción con el contexto

    Fine Root Productivity and Dynamics on a Forested Floodplain in South Carolina

    The highly dynamic, fine-root component of forested wetland ecosystems has received inadequate attention in the literature. Characterizing fine root dynamics is a challenging endeavor in any system, but the difficulties are particularly evident in forested floodplains where frequent hydrologic fluctuations directly influence fine root dynamics. Fine root (\u3c 3mm) biomass, production, and turnover were estimated for three soils exhibiting different drainage patterns within a mixed-oak community on the Coosawhatchie River floodplain, Jasper County, SC. Within a 45-cm deep vertical profile, 74% of total fine root biomass was restricted to the upper 15 cm of the soil surface. Fine root biomass decreased as the soil became less well-drained (e.g., fine root biomass in well-drained soil \u3e intermediately drained soil \u3e poorly drained soil). Fine root productivity was measured for one year using minirhizotrons and in-situ screens. Both methods suggested higher fine root production in better drained soils but showed frequent fluctuations in fine root growth and mortality, suggesting the need for frequent sampling at short intervals (e.g., monthly) to accurately assess fine root growth and turnover. Fine root production, estimated with in-situ screens, was 1.5, 1.8, and 0.9 Mg ha-1 yr-1 in the well-drained, intermediately drained, and poorly drained soils, respectively. Results from minirhizotrons indicated that fine roots in well-drained soils grew to greater depths while fine roots in poorly drained soils were restricted to surface soils. Minirhizotrons also revealed that the distribution of fine roots among morphological classes changed between well-drained and poorly drained soils

    Finitely presented wreath products and double coset decompositions

    We characterize which permutational wreath products W^(X)\rtimes G are finitely presented. This occurs if and only if G and W are finitely presented, G acts on X with finitely generated stabilizers, and with finitely many orbits on the cartesian square X^2. On the one hand, this extends a result of G. Baumslag about standard wreath products; on the other hand, this provides nontrivial examples of finitely presented groups. For instance, we obtain two quasi-isometric finitely presented groups, one of which is torsion-free and the other has an infinite torsion subgroup. Motivated by the characterization above, we discuss the following question: which finitely generated groups can have a finitely generated subgroup with finitely many double cosets?     The Biology Instrument for the Viking Mars Mission

    Two Viking spacecraft have successfully soft landed on the surface of Mars. Each carries, along with other scientific instruments, one biology laboratory with three different experiments designed to search for evidence of living microorganisms in material sampled from the Martian surface. This 15.5-kg biology instrument which occupies a volume of almost 28.3 dm3 is the first to carry out an in situ search for extraterrestrial life on a planet. The three experiments are called the pyrolytic release, labeled release, and gas exchange. The pyrolytic release experiment has the capability to measure the fixation of carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide into organic matter. The labeled release experiment detects metabolic processes by monitoring the production of volatile carbon compounds from a radioactively labeled nutrient mixture. The gas exchange experiment monitors the gas changes in the head space above a soil sample which is either incubated in a humid environment or supplied with a rich organic nutrient solution. Each experiment can analyze a soil sample as it is received from the surface or, as a control, analyze a soil which has been heated to above 160C. Each instrument has the capability to receive four different soils dug from the Martian surface and perform a number of analysis cycles depending on the particular experiment.     How parents perceive and feel about participation in community activities: The comparison between parents of preschoolers with and without autism spectrum disorders

    The present study compared how parents of preschoolers with and without Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) perceived and felt about participation in community activities. A questionnaire survey was conducted with 380 Hong Kong parents of preschoolers with ASD and 214 Hong Kong parents of preschoolers without ASD. The two groups were not different in their willingness and frequency of participation in community activities. However, the psychological processes underneath their willingness were very different. Among the parents of preschoolers with ASD, their willingness was associated with how they perceived the difficulty and importance of the participation and what emotions they experienced during the activities.     Dilepton Spectra from Decays of Light Unflavored Mesons

    The invariant mass spectrum of the e+ee^{+}e^{-} and μ+μ\mu ^{+}\mu ^{-} pairs from decays of light unflavored mesons with masses below the ϕ(1020)\phi (1020)-meson mass to final states containing along with a dilepton pair one photon, one meson, and two mesons are calculated within the framework of the effective meson theory.     A review is presented of dilepton and real photon measurements in relativistic heavy ion collisions over a very broad energy range from the low energies of the BEVALAC up to the highest energies available at RHIC. The dileptons cover the invariant mass range \mll = 0 - 2.5 GeV/c2^2, i.e. the continuum at low and intermediate masses and the light vector mesons, ρ,ω,ϕ\rho, \omega, \phi.
