Parent support advisor pilot : first interim report from the evaluation
The Parent Support Adviser (PSA) pilot is a government funded initiative to support 20 Local
Authorities (LAs) to introduce PSAs into their workforce. The Department for Children,
Schools and Families (DCSF) commissioned the Centre for Educational Development,
Appraisal and Research (CEDAR) to evaluate the PSA pilot programme from September
2006 – August 2008. A government grant (£40 million) has been made available to fund
employment of PSAs over this period. To date, 717 PSAs are in place, supporting parents in
1167 schools. This first Interim Report is based on semi-structured interviews with 97 PSAs,
85 line managers and 23 other professionals in 12 case study LAs during Phase 1 of the
evaluation, which was carried out between April and June 2007.
Phase 2 of the study will take place during the period October to December 2007; phase 3
will take place during March to June 2008. In addition to these interview-based studies with
the 12 case study LAs, an analysis will be made of the data collected by all 20 LAs over the
period of the pilot using a standard database devised by CEDAR. Data are being collected
on the PSAs’ work with parents and, where this occurs, with children. Finally, a cost
effectiveness study will be undertaken. The findings from these phases of the project will be
reported in the final report

Naturecultures guidance: steps in our journey
The emergence of cultural landscapes concepts heralded important mindset shifts in heritage practices. These have underpinned development of landscape approaches that recognise larger-scale interactions and the relationships between natural and cultural elements and processes. However, it has become apparent that an enduring nature-culture binary in heritage practices can result in adverse outcomes ‘on the ground’.
The ISCCL has provided a forum and a source of global leadership for these issues, including the exploration of the implications of working with naturecultures to achieve conservation outcomes that are effective and inclusive. Naturecultures was coined by Donna Haraway in 2003 to recognise that natural and human environments, including non-human and more-than-human beings (such as spirits, creation ancestors, divinities) are intimately bound or entangled within different places. There is a now a growing desire to move beyond a curious consideration of the conceptual possibilities of naturecultures to implement its meanings in a wide array of everyday heritage management practices.
Physically separated by the global pandemic, we are a small group of natural and cultural heritage practitioners and ISCCL members who decided to step briefly away from our organisational and institutional affiliations to connect with each other, reflect on our experiences, and offer guidance to others. This presentation will be our first opportunity to communicate what we’ve been up to, and to share some thoughts that our journey together has afforded.
We argue that applying naturecultures in our practices is beneficial for people and places, and can support more effective conservation outcomes. Please join us to think further about these ideas.

Photometric Variability in Kepler Target Stars: The Sun Among Stars -- A First Look
The Kepler mission provides an exciting opportunity to study the lightcurves
of stars with unprecedented precision and continuity of coverage. This is the
first look at a large sample of stars with photometric data of a quality that
has heretofore been only available for our Sun. It provides the first
opportunity to compare the irradiance variations of our Sun to a large cohort
of stars ranging from vary similar to rather different stellar properties, at a
wide variety of ages. Although Kepler data is in an early phase of maturity,
and we only analyze the first month of coverage, it is sufficient to garner the
first meaningful measurements of our Sun's variability in the context of a
large cohort of main sequence stars in the solar neighborhood. We find that
nearly half of the full sample is more active than the active Sun, although
most of them are not more than twice as active. The active fraction is closer
to a third for the stars most similar to the Sun, and rises to well more than
half for stars cooler than mid K spectral types.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, accepted to ApJ Letter
White-light flares on cool stars in the Kepler Quarter 1 Data
We present the results of a search for white light flares on the ~23,000 cool
dwarfs in the Kepler Quarter 1 long cadence data. We have identified 373
flaring stars, some of which flare multiple times during the observation
period. We calculate relative flare energies, flare rates and durations, and
compare these with the quiescent photometric variability of our sample. We find
that M dwarfs tend to flare more frequently but for shorter durations than K
dwarfs, and that they emit more energy relative to their quiescent luminosity
in a given flare than K dwarfs. Stars that are more photometrically variable in
quiescence tend to emit relatively more energy during flares, but variability
is only weakly correlated with flare frequency. We estimate distances for our
sample of flare stars and find that the flaring fraction agrees well with other
observations of flare statistics for stars within 300 pc above the Galactic
Plane. These observations provide a more rounded view of stellar flares by
sampling stars that have not been pre-selected by their activity, and are
informative for understanding the influence of these flares on planetary

Metagenomic Profiling of Microbial Pathogens in the Little Bighorn River, Montana
The Little Bighorn River is the primary source of water for water treatment plants serving the local Crow Agency population, and has special significance in the spiritual and ceremonial life of the Crow tribe. Unfortunately, the watershed suffers from impaired water quality, with high counts of fecal coliform bacteria routinely measured during run-off events. A metagenomic analysis was carried out to identify potential pathogens in the river water. The Oxford Nanopore MinION platform was used to sequence DNA in near real time to identify both uncultured and a coliform-enriched culture of microbes collected from a popular summer swimming area of the Little Bighorn River. Sequences were analyzed using CosmosID bioinformatics and, in agreement with previous studies, enterohemorrhagic and enteropathogenic Escherichia coli and other E. coli pathotypes were identified. Noteworthy was detection and identification of enteroaggregative E. coli O104:H4 and Vibrio cholerae serotype O1 El Tor, however, cholera toxin genes were not identified. Other pathogenic microbes, as well as virulence genes and antimicrobial resistance markers, were also identified and characterized by metagenomic analyses. It is concluded that metagenomics provides a useful and potentially routine tool for identifying in an in-depth manner microbial contamination of waterways and, thereby, protecting public health

Kepler-4B: A Hot Neptune-Like Planet of A G0 Star Near Main-Sequence Turnoff
Early time-series photometry from NASA's Kepler spacecraft has revealed a planet transiting the star we term Kepler-4, at R.A. = 19(h)02(m)27.(s)68, delta = +50 degrees 08'08 '' 7. The planet has an orbital period of 3.213 days and shows transits with a relative depth of 0.87 x 10(-3) and a duration of about 3.95 hr. Radial velocity (RV) measurements from the Keck High Resolution Echelle Spectrometer show a reflex Doppler signal of 9.3(-1.9)(+1.1) m s(-1), consistent with a low-eccentricity orbit with the phase expected from the transits. Various tests show no evidence for any companion star near enough to affect the light curve or the RVs for this system. From a transit-based estimate of the host star's mean density, combined with analysis of high-resolution spectra, we infer that the host star is near turnoff from the main sequence, with estimated mass and radius of 1.223(-0.091)(+0.053) M(circle dot) and 1.487(-0.084)(+0.071) R(circle dot).We estimate the planet mass and radius to be {M(P), R(P)} = {24.5 +/- 3.8 M(circle plus), 3.99 +/- 0.21 R(circle plus)}. KOI-54: The Kepler Discovery of Tidally Excited Pulsations and Brightenings in a Highly Eccentric Binary
Kepler observations of the star HD 187091 (KIC 8112039, hereafter KOI-54) revealed a remarkable light curve exhibiting sharp periodic brightening events every 41.8 days with a superimposed set of oscillations forming a beating pattern in phase with the brightenings. Spectroscopic observations revealed that this is a binary star with a highly eccentric orbit, e = 0.83. We are able to match the Kepler light curve and radial velocities with a nearly face-on (i = 5 degrees.5) binary star model in which the brightening events are caused by tidal distortion and irradiation of nearly identical A stars during their close periastron passage. The two dominant oscillations in the light curve, responsible for the beating pattern, have frequencies that are the 91st and 90th harmonic of the orbital frequency. The power spectrum of the light curve, after removing the binary star brightening component, reveals a large number of pulsations, 30 of which have a signal-to-noise ratio greater than or similar to 7. Nearly all of these pulsations have frequencies that are either integer multiples of the orbital frequency or are tidally split multiples of the orbital frequency. This pattern of frequencies unambiguously establishes the pulsations as resonances between the dynamic tides at periastron and the free oscillation modes of one or both of the stars.
