The SF36 as an outcome measure of services for end stage renal failure
OBJECTIVE: —To evaluate the use of the short
form 36 (SF36) as a measure of health
related quality of life of patients with end
stage renal failure, document the results,
and investigate factors, including mode of
treatment, which may influence it.
DESIGN: Cross sectional survey of patients
with end stage renal failure, with the
standard United Kingdom version of the
SF36 supplemented by specific questions
for end stage renal failure.
SETTING: A teaching hospital renal unit.
Subjects and methods—660 patients
treated at the Sheffield Kidney Institute by
haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and
transplantation. Internal consistency, percentage
of maximal or minimal responses,
SF36 scores, effect sizes, correlations
between independent predictor variables
and individual dimension scores of the
SF36. Multiple regression analysis of the
SF36 scores for the physical functioning,
vitality, and mental health dimensions
against treatment, age, risk (comorbidity)
score, and other independent variables.
RESULTS: A high response rate was
achieved. Internal consistency was good.
There were no floor or ceiling effects other
than for the two “role” dimensions. Overall
health related quality of life was poor
compared with the general population.
Having a functioning transplant was a significant
predictor of higher score in the
three dimensions (physical functioning,
vitality, and mental health) for which
multiple regression models were constructed.
Age, sex, comorbidity, duration
of treatment, level of social and emotional
support, household numbers, and hospital
dialysis were also (variably) significant
predictors.
CONCLUSIONS: The SF36 is a practical and
consistent questionnaire in this context,
and there is evidence to support its
construct validity. Overall the health related
quality of life of these patients is
poor, although transplantation is associated
with higher scores independently of
the effect of age and comorbidity. Age,
comorbidity, and sex are also predictive of
the scores attained in the three dimensions
studied. Further studies are required
to ascertain whether altering those
predictor variables which are under the
influence of professional carers is associated
with changes in health related quality
of life, and thus confirm the value of this
outcome as a measure of quality of care
Enrichment of innate lymphoid cell populations in gingival tissue
Innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) are a population of lymphocytes that act as the first line of immunologic defense at mucosal surfaces. The ILC family in the skin, lungs, and gastrointestinal tissues has been investigated, and there are reports of individual subsets of ILCs in the oral tissues. We sought to investigate the whole ILC population (group 1, 2, and 3 subsets) in the murine gingivae and the lymph nodes draining the oral cavity. We show that ILCs made up a greater proportion of the whole CD45+ lymphocyte population in the murine gingivae (0.356% ± 0.039%) as compared with the proportion of ILCs in the draining lymph nodes (0.158% ± 0.005%). Cytokine profiling of the ILC populations demonstrated different proportions of ILC subsets in the murine gingivae versus the regional lymph nodes. The majority of ILCs in the draining lymph nodes expressed IL-5, whereas there were equal proportions of IFN-γ- and IL-5 expressing ILCs in the oral mucosa. The percentage of IL-17+ ILCs was comparable between the murine gingivae and the oral draining lymph nodes. These data suggest an enrichment of ILCs in the murine gingivae, and these ILCs reflect a cytokine profile discrepant to that of the local draining lymph nodes. These studies indicate diversity and enrichment of ILCs at the oral mucosal surface. The function of ILCs in the oral cavity remains to be determined; here, we provide a premise of ILC populations that merits future consideration in investigations of mouse models and human tissues
The relationship between particle freeze-out distributions and HBT radius parameters
The relationship between pion and kaon space-time freeze-out distributions
and the HBT radius parameters in high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions is
investigated. We show that the HBT radius parameters in general do not reflect
the R.M.S. deviations of the single particle production points. Instead, the
HBT radius parameters are most closely related to the curvature of the
two-particle space-time relative position distribution at the origin. We

Generalized Parton Distributions of the Pion
Off-forward structure functions of the pion are investigated in twist-two and
twist-three approximation. A simple model is used for the pion, which allows to
introduce finite size effects, while preserving gauge invariance. Results for
the imaginary parts of the gamma^* pi -> gamma^* pi off-forward amplitude and
of the structure functions are presented. Generalized Callan-Gross relations

Sydnone Cycloaddition Route to Pyrazole-Based Analogs of Combretastatin A4.
The combretastatins are an important class of tubulin-binding agents. Of this family, a number of compounds are potent tumor Vascular Disrupting Agents (VDAs) and have shown promise in the clinic for cancer therapy. We have developed a modular synthetic route to combretastatin analogs based on a pyrazole core through highly-regioselective alkyne cycloaddition reactions of sydnones. These compounds show modest to high potency against human umbilical vein endothelial cell proliferation. Moreover, evidence is presented that these novel VDAs have the same mode of action as CA4P and bind reversibly to β-tubulin - believed to be a key feature in avoiding toxicity. The most active compound from in vitro studies was taken forward to an in vivo model and instigated an increase in tumor cell necrosis

Microscopic Description of Black Rings in AdS/CFT
We discuss some aspects of the recently discovered BPS black ring solutions
in terms of the AdS/CFT correspondence. In the type IIB frame in which the
black ring carries the charges of the D1-D5-P system, we propose a microscopic
description of the rings in the orbifold CFT governing this system. In our
proposal, the CFT effectively splits into two parts: one part captures the
supertube-like properties of the ring, and the other captures the entropy. We
can also understand the black ring entropy by relating the geometry near the
ring to BPS black holes in four dimensions, although this latter approach does
not directly lead to an identification of black rings in terms of the D1-D5-P

Breakdown of Particle-Hole Symmetry in the Lowest Landau Level Revealed by Tunneling Spectroscopy
Tunneling measurements on 2D electron gases at high magnetic field reveal a
qualitative difference between the two spin sublevels of the lowest Landau
level. While the tunneling current-voltage characteristic at filling factor
is a single peak shifted from zero bias by a Coulomb pseudogap, the
spectrum at shows a well-resolved double peak structure. This
difference is present regardless of whether and occur at
the same or different magnetic fields. No analogous effect is seen at and 7/2 in the first excited Landau level.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
