    News and public affairs programming of the Westinghouse Broadcasting Company

    Thesis (M.S.)--Boston UniversityThis study investigates the public affairs and news organization and programming of the Westinghouse Broad-casting Company. An attempt is made to evaluate the WBC operations and to determine whether other broadcasters should adapt WBC practices to their own situations and whether this could be done without a large capital investment. Part One is devoted to an investigation of the general aspects of public affairs and news broadcasting. The distinguishing features of public service and public affairs are treated in some detail because of the confusion which these terms evoke, even among broadcasters. In the discussion of news broadcasting, the responsibilities of broadcast newsmen are emphasized. The writer attempts here to determine whether there is a valid type of excitement which an be injected into a newscast (as Westinghouse believes) or whether all excitement in news presentation is sensationalism. Different approaches to news by three basic types of news organization are considered in this chapter, and the relationships of organization and news approach are treated. [TRUNCATED

    Fast and Scalable Spike and Slab Variable Selection in High-Dimensional Gaussian Processes

    Variable selection in Gaussian processes (GPs) is typically undertaken by thresholding the inverse lengthscales of automatic relevance determination kernels, but in high-dimensional datasets this approach can be unreliable. A more probabilistically principled alternative is to use spike and slab priors and infer a posterior probability of variable inclusion. However, existing implementations in GPs are very costly to run in both high-dimensional and large-n datasets, or are only suitable for unsupervised settings with specific kernels. As such, we develop a fast and scalable variational inference algorithm for the spike and slab GP that is tractable with arbitrary differentiable kernels. We improve our algorithm’s ability to adapt to the sparsity of relevant variables by Bayesian model averaging over hyperparameters, and achieve substantial speed ups using zero temperature posterior restrictions, dropout pruning and nearest neighbour minibatching. In experiments our method consistently outperforms vanilla and sparse variational GPs whilst retaining similar runtimes (even when n=10^6) and performs competitively with a spike and slab GP using MCMC but runs up to 1000 times faster

    Energy utilization model for silver perch, Bairdiella chrysoura (bioenergetics, sciaenidae, growth, eelgrass, Chesapeake Bay)

    An energetics model was constructed as an alternative method to length frequency analysis for the estimation of growth for juvenile silver perch, Bairdiella chrysoura. The model approach was adopted since estimation of juvenile estuarine fish growth by only collecting length or weight frequency data is difficult due to the large bodies of water and variety of microhabitats that must be regularly sampled over short time intervals. Field and laboratory data was included in analysis of model compartments for growth, metabolism, food intake and energy loss in waste products. Food habit studies indicated that silver perch is a planktivore that feeds on calanoid copepods during the day and mysids at night. Estimated energy utilization for silver perch at maintenance and maximum rations were similar to literature values for yellow perch, Perca flavescens, and brown trout, Salmo trutta. Model simulation of growth for silver perch in the York River, Virginia from July through October 1981, contained less variation in the size prediction than growth rates determined by length frequency analysis. The model did not contain periods of negative growth as did the field data. By the end of the season, model predictions of silver perch length matched the average length of silver perch captured in the lower York River. The construction of energy utilization models through complementary laboratory and field research has been demonstrated to be a viable method for estimating growth for juvenile fishes. Length frequency analysis is limited to only expressing growth over time.     Towards a theory of conceptual design for software

    Concepts are the building blocks of software systems. They are not just subjective mental constructs, but are objective features of a system's design: increments of functionality that were consciously introduced by a designer to serve particular purposes. This essay argues for viewing the design of software in terms of concepts, with their invention (or adoption) and refinement as the central activity of software design. A family of products can be characterized by arranging concepts in a dependence graph from which coherent concept subsets can be extracted. Just as bugs can be found in the code of a function prior to testing by reviewing the programmer's argument for its correctness, so flaws can be found in a software design by reviewing an argument by the designer. This argument consists of providing, for each concept, a single compelling purpose, and demonstrating how the concept fulfills the purpose with an archetypal scenario called an 'operational principle'. Some simple conditions (primarily in the relationship between concepts and their purposes) can then be applied to reveal flaws in the conceptual design.SUTD-MIT International Design Centre (IDC

    The recognition of human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-E by the heterodimeric CD94-NKG2 natural killer (NK) receptor family is a central innate mechanism by which NK cells monitor the expression of other HLA molecules, yet the structural basis of this highly specific interaction is unclear. Here, we describe the crystal structure of CD94-NKG2A in complex with HLA-E bound to a peptide derived from the leader sequence of HLA-G. The CD94 subunit dominated the interaction with HLA-E, whereas the NKG2A subunit was more peripheral to the interface. Moreover, the invariant CD94 subunit dominated the peptide-mediated contacts, albeit with poor surface and chemical complementarity. This unusual binding mode was consistent with mutagenesis data at the CD94-NKG2A–HLA-E interface. There were few conformational changes in either CD94-NKG2A or HLA-E upon ligation, and such a “lock and key” interaction is typical of innate receptor–ligand interactions. Nevertheless, the structure also provided insight into how this interaction can be modulated by subtle changes in the peptide ligand or by the pairing of CD94 with other members of the NKG2 family. Differences in the docking strategies used by the NKG2D and CD94-NKG2A receptors provided a basis for understanding the promiscuous nature of ligand recognition by NKG2D compared with the fidelity of the CD94-NKG2 receptors
