Patient and physician factors associated with participation in cervical and uterine cancer trials: An NRG/GOG247 study
AbstractPurposeThe aim of this study was to identify patient and physician factors related to enrollment onto Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG) trials.MethodsProspective study of women with primary or recurrent cancer of the uterus or cervix treated at a GOG institution from July 2010 to January 2012. Logistic regression examined probability of availability, eligibility and enrollment in a GOG trial. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for significant (p<0.05) results reported.ResultsSixty institutions, 781 patients, and 150 physicians participated, 300/780 (38%) had a trial available, 290/300 had known participation status. Of these, 150 women enrolled (59.5%), 102 eligible did not enroll (35%), 38 (13%) were ineligible. Ethnicity and specialty of physician, practice type, data management availability, and patient age were significantly associated with trial availability. Patients with >4 comorbidities (OR 4.5; CI 1.7–11.8) had higher odds of trial ineligibility. Non-White patients (OR 7.9; CI 1.3–46.2) and patients of Black physicians had greater odds of enrolling (OR 56.5; CI 1.1–999.9) in a therapeutic trial. Significant patient therapeutic trial enrollment factors: belief trial may help (OR 76.9; CI 4.9–>1000), concern about care if not on trial (OR12.1; CI 2.1–71.4), pressure to enroll (OR .27; CI 0.12–.64), caregiving without pay (OR 0.13; CI .02–.84). Significant physician beliefs were: patients would not do well on standard therapy (OR 3.6; CI 1.6–8.4), and trial would not be time consuming (OR 3.3; CI 1.3–8.1).ConclusionsTrial availability, patient and physician beliefs were factors identified that if modified could improve enrollment in cancer cooperative group clinical trials
Gas-Phase Oxygen Gradients in Strongly Interacting Galaxies: I. Early-Stage Interactions
A consensus is emerging that interacting galaxies show depressed nuclear gas
metallicities compared to isolated star-forming galaxies. Simulations suggest
that this nuclear underabundance is caused by interaction-induced inflow of
metal-poor gas, and that this inflow concurrently flattens the radial
metallicity gradients in strongly interacting galaxies. We present
metallicities of over 300 HII regions in a sample of 16 spirals that are
members of strongly interacting galaxy pairs with mass ratio near unity. The
deprojected radial gradients in these galaxies are about half of those in a
control sample of isolated, late-type spirals. Detailed comparison of the
gradients with simulations show remarkable agreement in gradient distributions,
the relationship between gradients and nuclear underabundances, and the shape
of profile deviations from a straight line. Taken together, this evidence
conclusively demonstrates that strongly interacting galaxies at the present day
undergo nuclear metal dilution due to gas inflow, as well as significant
flattening of their gas-phase metallicity gradients, and that current
simulations can robustly reproduce this behavior at a statistical level.Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap

Young onset dementia: Public involvement in co-designing community-based support
Whilst the support requirements of people diagnosed with young onset dementia are well-documented, less is known about what needs to be in place to provide age-appropriate care. To understand priorities for service planning and commissioning and to inform the design of a future study of community-based service delivery models, we held two rounds of discussions with four groups of people affected by young onset dementia (n = 31) and interviewed memory services (n = 3) and non-profit service providers (n = 7) in two sites in England. Discussions confirmed published evidence on support requirements, but also reframed priorities for support and suggested new approaches to dementia care at the community level. This paper argues that involving people with young onset dementia in the assessment of research findings in terms of what is important to them, and inviting suggestions for solutions, provides a way for co-designing services that address the challenges of accessing support for people affected by young onset dementia
Supersymmetric Relations Among Electromagnetic Dipole Operators
Supersymmetric contributions to all leptonic electromagnetic dipole operators
have essentially identical diagramatic structure. With approximate slepton
universality this allows the muon anomalous magnetic moment to be related to
the electron electric dipole moment in terms of supersymmetric phases, and to
radiative flavor changing lepton decays in terms of small violations of slepton
universality. If the current discrepancy between the measured and Standard
Model values of the muon anomalous magnetic moment is due to supersymmetry, the
current bound on the electron electric dipole moment then implies that the
phase of the electric dipole operator is less than . Likewise
the current bound on decay implies that the fractional
selectron-smuon mixing in the left-left mass squared matrix, \delta m_{\smuon
\selectron}^2 / m_{\slepton}^2, is less than . These relations and
constraints are fairly insensitive to details of the superpartner spectrum for

The complete genome sequence and comparative genome analysis of the high pathogenicity Yersinia enterocolitica strain 8081
The human enteropathogen, Yersinia enterocolitica, is a significant link in the range of Yersinia pathologies extending
from mild gastroenteritis to bubonic plague. Comparison at the genomic level is a key step in our understanding of the
genetic basis for this pathogenicity spectrum. Here we report the genome of Y. enterocolitica strain 8081 (serotype 0:8;
biotype 1B) and extensive microarray data relating to the genetic diversity of the Y. enterocolitica species. Our analysis
reveals that the genome of Y. enterocolitica strain 8081 is a patchwork of horizontally acquired genetic loci, including a
plasticity zone of 199 kb containing an extraordinarily high density of virulence genes. Microarray analysis has
provided insights into species-specific Y. enterocolitica gene functions and the intraspecies differences between the
high, low, and nonpathogenic Y. enterocolitica biotypes. Through comparative genome sequence analysis we provide
new information on the evolution of the Yersinia. We identify numerous loci that represent ancestral clusters of genes
potentially important in enteric survival and pathogenesis, which have been lost or are in the process of being lost, in
the other sequenced Yersinia lineages. Our analysis also highlights large metabolic operons in Y. enterocolitica that are
absent in the related enteropathogen, Yersinia pseudotuberculosis, indicating major differences in niche and nutrients
used within the mammalian gut. These include clusters directing, the production of hydrogenases, tetrathionate
respiration, cobalamin synthesis, and propanediol utilisation. Along with ancestral gene clusters, the genome of Y.
enterocolitica has revealed species-specific and enteropathogen-specific loci. This has provided important insights into
the pathology of this bacterium and, more broadly, into the evolution of the genus. Moreover, wider investigations
looking at the patterns of gene loss and gain in the Yersinia have highlighted common themes in the genome evolution
of other human enteropathogens
WHS Guidelines for the Treatment of Pressure Ulcers: 2023 Update
The major populations at risk for developing pressure ulcers are older adults who have multiple risk factors that increase their vulnerability, people who are critically ill and those with spinal cord injury/disease. The reported prevalence of pressure ulcers in the United States is 2.5 million. However, this estimate is derived from acute care facilities and does not include people who are living at home or in nursing facilities. Despite the implementation of hospital and facility-based preventive measures, the incidence of pressure ulcers has not decreased in decades. In addition to the burden of pain, infection and death, it is estimated that hospital-acquired pressure ulcers cost the health system $26.8 billion annually with over 50% of the cost attributed to treating Stage 3 and 4 pressure injuries. Thus, it is critical to examine the literature and develop guidelines that will improve the outcomes of this complex and costly condition. This guideline update is a compendium of the best available evidence for the treatment of Pressure Ulcers published since the last update in 2015 and includes a new section based on changing demographics entitled ‘Palliative wound care for seriously ill patients with pressure ulcers’. The overall goal of the Wound Healing Society Guideline project is to present clear, concise and commercial free guidelines that clinicians can use to guide care, that researchers can use to develop studies that will improve treatment and that both clinicians and researchers can use to understand the gaps in our knowledge base
Onset and Progression of Behavioral and Molecular Phenotypes in a Novel Congenic R6/2 Line Exhibiting Intergenerational CAG Repeat Stability
In the present study we report on the use of speed congenics to generate a C57BL/6J congenic line of HD-model R6/2 mice carrying 110 CAG repeats, which uniquely exhibits minimal intergenerational instability. We also report the first identification of the R6/2 transgene insertion site. The relatively stable line of 110 CAG R6/2 mice was characterized for the onset of behavioral impairments in motor, cognitive and psychiatric-related phenotypes as well as the progression of disease-related impairments from 4 to 10 weeks of age. 110Q mice exhibited many of the phenotypes commonly associated with the R6/2 model including reduced activity and impairments in rotarod performance. The onset of many of the phenotypes occurred around 6 weeks and was progressive across age. In addition, some phenotypes were observed in mice as early as 4 weeks of age. The present study also reports the onset and progression of changes in several molecular phenotypes in the novel R6/2 mice and the association of these changes with behavioral symptom onset and progression.
