Preprocessing of PHERMEX flash radiographic images with Haar and adaptive filtering
Work on image preparation has continued with the application of high-sequency boosting via Haar filtering. This is useful in developing line or edge structures. Widrow LMS adaptive filtering has also been shown to be useful in developing edge structure in special problems. Shadow effects can be obtained with the latter which may be useful for some problems. Combined Haar and adaptive filtering is illustrated for a PHERMEX image
On the pion-nucleon coupling constant
In view of persisting misunderstanding about the determination of the
pion-nucleon coupling constants in the Nijmegen multienergy partial-wave
analyses of pp, np, and pbar-p scattering data, we present additional
information which may clarify several points of discussion. We comment on
several recent papers addressing the issue of the pion-nucleon coupling
constant and criticizing the Nijmegen analyses.Comment: 19 pages, Nijmegen preprint THEF-NYM-92-0
Microscopic Calculation of the System
We report on a consistent, microscopic calculation of the bound and
scattering states in the 4He system employing a realistic nucleon-nucleon
potential in the framework of the resonating group model (RGM). We present for
comparison with these microscopic RGM calculations the results from a
charge-independent, Coulomb-corrected R-matrix analysis of all types of data
for reactions in the A=4 system. Comparisons are made between the phase shifts,
and with a selection of measurements from each reaction, as well as between the
resonance spectra obtained from both calculations. In general, the comparisons
are favorable, but distinct differences are observed between the RGM
calculations and some of the polarisation data. The partial-wave decomposition
of the experimental data produced by the R-matrix analysis shows that these
differences can be attributed to just a few S-matrix elements, for which
inadequate tensor-force strength in the N-N interaction used appears to be
responsible.Comment: 53 pages, PS document can also be found at

An advertising aesthetic: Real beauty and visual impairment
This article considers critical responses to disability in 20th-century Anglo-American advertisements from which a problematic advertising aesthetic emerges. The aesthetic is used to test the progressiveness of a recent trilogy of Dove advertisements that represents visual impairment. The conclusion is that while there has been much progress, the ableist advertising aesthetic of decades ago remains an issue in the 21st century. More specifically, the Dove advertisements are found to be underpinned by ocularcentrism, despite their apparent appreciation of visual impairment
Development of a Keetch and Byram based drought index sensitive to forest management in Mediterranean conditions
[EN] The present work aims to take a closer look at the behavior of two releases of the Keetch Byram droughtindex (KBDI) under different forest management strategies in Mediterranean conditions. Since theseversions of the index were demonstrated to be insensitive to the changes in water balance caused bydifferent thinning treatments, a new KBDI-based index sensitive to silviculture operations was developed. This new approach enabled us to simulate the benefits achieved from a thinning operation in terms offorest fire risk reduction. Abatements of 22.5% and 26.4% in KBDI were obtained for the 2009 and 2010high-risk forest fire periods, respectively, due to thinning. The reductions observed in the short-term didnot disappear in a long term. A plot thinned 10 years ago showed KBDI reductions of 12.5% and 6.7% withrespect to a non-managed plot (control treatment) in the same period. Finally, in order to make possibleapplication of the new index to other stands, coefficients of the index were based on well-known andeasy to get tree-related and physiological variables. This study is part of the research project: "CGL2011-28776-C02-02, Hydrological characterization of forest structures at plot scale for an adaptive management, Hydrosil", funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation and FEDER funds.GarcĂa Prats, A.; Campo GarcĂa, ADD.; Tarcisio Fernandes, JG.; Molina Herrera, A. Homomorphic processing of seismic signals
An introduction to homomorphic processing of time series is presented. The basic concept is discussed and one form of implementation is adduced. Simple examples of reverberation problems are illustrated. Simple applications to real-time series associated with underground nuclear explosions and earthquakes are then presented. 19 figures
