Aero dopes and varnishes
Before proceeding to discuss the preparation of dope solutions, it will be necessary to consider some of the essential properties which should be possessed of a dope film, deposited in and on the surface of an aero fabric. The first is that it should tighten the material and second it should withstand weathering
A weighted configuration model and inhomogeneous epidemics
A random graph model with prescribed degree distribution and degree dependent
edge weights is introduced. Each vertex is independently equipped with a random
number of half-edges and each half-edge is assigned an integer valued weight
according to a distribution that is allowed to depend on the degree of its
vertex. Half-edges with the same weight are then paired randomly to create
edges. An expression for the threshold for the appearance of a giant component
in the resulting graph is derived using results on multi-type branching
processes. The same technique also gives an expression for the basic
reproduction number for an epidemic on the graph where the probability that a
certain edge is used for transmission is a function of the edge weight. It is
demonstrated that, if vertices with large degree tend to have large (small)
weights on their edges and if the transmission probability increases with the
edge weight, then it is easier (harder) for the epidemic to take off compared
to a randomized epidemic with the same degree and weight distribution. A recipe
for calculating the probability of a large outbreak in the epidemic and the
size of such an outbreak is also given. Finally, the model is fitted to three
empirical weighted networks of importance for the spread of contagious diseases
and it is shown that can be substantially over- or underestimated if the
correlation between degree and weight is not taken into account
Understanding/unravelling carotenoid excited singlet states.
Carotenoids are essential light-harvesting pigments in natural photosynthesis. They absorb in the blueâgreen region of the solar spectrum and transfer the absorbed energy to (bacterio-)chlorophylls, and thus expand the wavelength range of light that is able to drive photosynthesis. This process is an example of singletâsinglet excitation energy transfer, and carotenoids serve to enhance the overall efficiency of photosynthetic light reactions. The photochemistry and photophysics of carotenoids have often been interpreted by referring to those of simple polyene molecules that do not possess any functional groups. However, this may not always be wise because carotenoids usually have a number of functional groups that induce the variety of photochemical behaviours in them. These differences can also make the interpretation of the singlet excited states of carotenoids very complicated. In this article, we review the properties of the singlet excited states of carotenoids with the aim of producing as coherent a picture as possible of what is currently known and what needs to be learned
Mechanical and microstructural investigations of tungsten and doped tungsten materials produced via powder injection molding
The physical properties of tungsten such as the high melting point of 3420°C, the high strength and thermal conductivity, the low thermal expansion and low erosion rate make this material attractive as a plasma facing material. However, the manufacturing of such tungsten parts by mechanical machining such as milling and turning is extremely costly and time intensive because this material is very hard and brittle. Powder Injection Molding (PIM) as special process allows the mass production of components, the joining of different materials without brazing and the creation of composite and prototype materials, and is an ideal tool for scientific investigations. This contribution describes the characterization and analyses of prototype materials produced via PIM. The investigation of the pure tungsten and oxide or carbide doped tungsten materials comprises the microstructure examination, element allocation, texture analyses, and mechanical testing via four-point bend (4-PB). Furthermore, the different materials were characterized by high heat flux (HHF) tests applying transient thermal loads at different base temperatures to address thermal shock and thermal fatigue performance. Additionally, HHF investigations provide information about the thermo-mechanical behavior to extreme steady state thermal loading and measurements of the thermal conductivity as well as oxidation tests were done. Post mortem analyses are performed quantifying and qualifying the occurring damage with respect to reference tungsten grades by metallographic and microscopical means
The time to extinction for an SIS-household-epidemic model
We analyse a stochastic SIS epidemic amongst a finite population partitioned
into households. Since the population is finite, the epidemic will eventually
go extinct, i.e., have no more infectives in the population. We study the
effects of population size and within household transmission upon the time to
extinction. This is done through two approximations. The first approximation is
suitable for all levels of within household transmission and is based upon an
Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process approximation for the diseases fluctuations about an
endemic level relying on a large population. The second approximation is
suitable for high levels of within household transmission and approximates the
number of infectious households by a simple homogeneously mixing SIS model with
the households replaced by individuals. The analysis, supported by a simulation
study, shows that the mean time to extinction is minimized by moderate levels
of within household transmission
Microstructural analysis of phase separation in iron chalcogenide superconductors
The interplay between superconductivity, magnetism and crystal structure in
iron-based superconductors is a topic of great interest amongst the condensed
matter physics community as it is thought to be the key to understanding the
mechanisms responsible for high temperature superconductivity. Alkali metal
doped iron chalcogenide superconductors exhibit several unique characteristics
which are not found in other iron-based superconducting materials such as
antiferromagnetic ordering at room temperature, the presence of ordered iron
vacancies and high resistivity normal state properties. Detailed
microstructural analysis is essential in order to understand the origin of
these unusual properties. Here we have used a range of complementary scanning
electron microscope based techniques, including high-resolution electron
backscatter di raction mapping, to assess local variations in composition and
lattice parameter with high precision and sub-micron spatial resolution. Phase
separation is observed in the Csx Fe2-ySe2 crystals, with the minor phase
distributed in a plate-like morphology throughout the crystal. Our results are
consistent with superconductivity occurring only in the minority phase.Comment: Accepted for publication in a special edition of Supercond. Sci.

A statistical network analysis of the HIV/AIDS epidemics in Cuba
The Cuban contact-tracing detection system set up in 1986 allowed the
reconstruction and analysis of the sexual network underlying the epidemic
(5,389 vertices and 4,073 edges, giant component of 2,386 nodes and 3,168
edges), shedding light onto the spread of HIV and the role of contact-tracing.
Clustering based on modularity optimization provides a better visualization and
understanding of the network, in combination with the study of covariates. The
graph has a globally low but heterogeneous density, with clusters of high
intraconnectivity but low interconnectivity. Though descriptive, our results
pave the way for incorporating structure when studying stochastic SIR epidemics

Fluorescence during Doppler cooling of a single trapped atom
We investigate the temporal dynamics of Doppler cooling of an initially hot
single trapped atom in the weak binding regime using a semiclassical approach.
We develop an analytical model for the simplest case of a single vibrational
mode for a harmonic trap, and show how this model allows us to estimate the
initial energy of the trapped particle by observing the fluorescence rate
during the cooling process. The experimental implementation of this temperature
measurement provides a way to measure atom heating rates by observing the
temperature rise in the absence of cooling. This method is technically
relatively simple compared to conventional sideband detection methods, and the
two methods are in reasonable agreement. We also discuss the effects of RF
micromotion, relevant for a trapped atomic ion, and the effect of coupling
between the vibrational modes on the cooling dynamics.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, Submitted to Phys. Rev.
Beneficial effects of running and milk protein supplements on Sirtuins and risk factors of metabolic disorders in rats with low aerobic capacity
Background Physical activity and dietary intake of dairy products are associated with improved metabolic health. Dairy products are rich with branched chain amino acids that are essential for energy production. To gain insight into the mechanisms underlying the benefit of the sub-chronic effects of running and intake of milk protein supplements, we studied Low Capacity Runner rats (LCR), a rodent exercise model with risk for metabolic disorders. We especially focused on the role of Sirtuins, energy level dependent proteins that affect many cellular metabolic processes. Methods Forty-seven adult LCR female rats sedentary or running voluntarily in wheels were fed normal chow and given supplements of either whey or milk protein drink (PD)-supplemented water, or water only for 21 weeks. Physiological responses were measured in vivo. Blood lipids were determined from serum. Mitochondrial markers and Sirtuins (Sirt1-7) including downstream targets were measured in plantaris muscle by western blotting. Results For the first 10 weeks whey-drinking rats ran about 50% less compared to other groups; still, in all runners glucose tolerance improved and triglycerides decreased. Generally, running induced a âŒsix-fold increase in running capacity and a âŒ8% decrease in % body fat. Together with running, protein supplements increased the relative lean mass of the total body weight by âŒ11%. In comparison with sedentary controls, running and whey increased HDL (21%) and whey, with or without running, lowered LDL (â34%). Running increased mitochondrial biogenesis and Sirtuins 3 and 4. When combined with exercise, both whey and milk protein drink induced about a 4-fold increase in Sirt3, compared to runners drinking water only, and about a 2-fold increase compared to the respective sedentary group. Protein supplements, with or without running, enhanced the phosphorylation level of the acetyl-coA-carboxylase, suggesting increased fat oxidation. Both supplemented diets increased Sirt5 and Sirt7 without an additional effect from exercise. Running diminished and PD supplement increased Sirt6. Conclusion We demonstrate in rats new sub-chronic effects of milk proteins on metabolism that involve Sirtuins and their downstream targets in skeletal muscle. The results show that running and milk proteins act on reducing the risk factors of metabolic disorders and suggest that the underlying mechanisms may involve Sirtuins. Notably, we found that milk protein supplements have some favorable effects on metabolism even without running.Peer reviewe
Optoelectronics with electrically tunable PN diodes in a monolayer dichalcogenide
One of the most fundamental devices for electronics and optoelectronics is
the PN junction, which provides the functional element of diodes, bipolar
transistors, photodetectors, LEDs, and solar cells, among many other devices.
In conventional PN junctions, the adjacent p- and n-type regions of a
semiconductor are formed by chemical doping. Materials with ambipolar
conductance, however, allow for PN junctions to be configured and modified by
electrostatic gating. This electrical control enables a single device to have
multiple functionalities. Here we report ambipolar monolayer WSe2 devices in
which two local gates are used to define a PN junction exclusively within the
sheet of WSe2. With these electrically tunable PN junctions, we demonstrate
both PN and NP diodes with ideality factors better than 2. Under excitation
with light, the diodes show photodetection responsivity of 210 mA/W and
photovoltaic power generation with a peak external quantum efficiency of 0.2%,
promising numbers for a nearly transparent monolayer sheet in a lateral device
geometry. Finally, we demonstrate a light-emitting diode based on monolayer
WSe2. These devices provide a fundamental building block for ubiquitous,
ultra-thin, flexible, and nearly transparent optoelectronic and electronic
applications based on ambipolar dichalcogenide materials.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure
