Embossed Teflon AF Laminate Membrane Microfluidic Diaphragm Valves
A microfluidic system has been designed to survive spaceflight and to function autonomously on the Martian surface. It manipulates microscopic quantities of liquid water and performs chemical analyses on these samples to assay for the presence of molecules associated with past or present living processes. This technology lies at the core of the Urey Instrument, which is scheduled for inclusion on the Pasteur Payload of the ESA ExoMars rover mission in 2013. Fabrication processes have been developed to make the microfabricated Teflon-AF microfluidic diaphragm pumps capable of surviving extreme temperature excursions before and after exposure to liquid water. Two glass wafers are etched with features and a continuous Teflon membrane is sandwiched between them (see figure). Single valves are constructed using this geometry. The microfabricated devices are then post processed by heating the assembled device while applying pneumatic pressure to force the Teflon diaphragm against the valve seat while it is softened. After cooling the device, the embossed membrane retains this new shape. This solves previous problems with bubble introduction into the fluid flow where deformations of the membrane at the valve seat occurred during device bonding at elevated temperatures (100-150 C). The use of laminated membranes containing commercial Teflon AF 2400 sheet sandwiched between spun Teflon AF 1600 layers performed best, and were less gas permeable than Teflon AF 1600 membranes on their own. Spinning Teflon AF 1600 solution (6 percent in FLOURINERT(Registered TradeMark) FC40 solvent, 3M Company) at 500 rpm for 1.5 seconds, followed by 1,000 rpm for 3 seconds onto Borofloat glass wafers, results in a 10-micron-thick film of extremely smooth Teflon AF. This spinning process is repeated several times on flat, blank, glass wafers in order to gradually build a thick, smooth membrane. After running this process at least five times, the wafer and Teflon coating are heated under vacuum at 220 C for one hour in order to drive off any residual solvent present in the composite film. After this, a second blank, glass wafer is brought down from above and the stack is held under vacuum at 3 atm mechanical pressure for ten 10 hours
The establishment of Central American migratory corridors and the biogeographic origins of seasonally dry tropical forests in Mexico
Biogeography and community ecology can mutually illuminate the formation of a regional species pool or biome. Here, we apply phylogenetic methods to a large and diverse plant clade, Malpighiaceae, to characterize the formation of its species pool in Mexico, and its occupancy of the seasonally dry tropical forest (SDTF) biome that occurs there. We find that the ~162 species of Mexican Malpighiaceae represent ~33 dispersals from South America beginning in the Eocene and continuing until the Pliocene (~46.4–3.8 Myr). Furthermore, dispersal rates between South America and Mexico show a significant six-fold increase during the mid-Miocene (~23.9 Myr). We hypothesize that this increase marked the availability of Central America as an important corridor for Neotropical plant migration. We additionally demonstrate that this high rate of dispersal contributed substantially more to the phylogenetic diversity of Malpighiaceae in Mexico than in situ diversification. Finally, we show that most lineages arrived in Mexico pre-adapted with regard to one key SDTF trait, total annual precipitation. In contrast, these lineages adapted to a second key trait, precipitation seasonality, in situ as mountain building in the region gave rise to the abiotic parameters of extant SDTF. The timing of this in situ adaptation to seasonal precipitation suggests that SDTF likely originated its modern characteristics by the late Oligocene, but was geographically more restricted until its expansion in the mid-Miocene. These results highlight the complex interplay of dispersal, adaptation, and in situ diversification in the formation of tropical biomes. Our results additionally demonstrate that these processes are not static, and their relevance can change markedly over evolutionary time. This has important implications for understanding the origin of SDTF in Mexico, but also for understanding the temporal and spatial origin of biomes and regional species pools more broadly
LCOGT Network Observatory Operations
We describe the operational capabilities of the Las Cumbres Observatory
Global Telescope Network. We summarize our hardware and software for
maintaining and monitoring network health. We focus on methodologies to utilize
the automated system to monitor availability of sites, instruments and
telescopes, to monitor performance, permit automatic recovery, and provide
automatic error reporting. The same jTCS control system is used on telescopes
of apertures 0.4m, 0.8m, 1m and 2m, and for multiple instruments on each. We
describe our network operational model, including workloads, and illustrate our
current tools, and operational performance indicators, including telemetry and
metrics reporting from on-site reductions. The system was conceived and
designed to establish effective, reliable autonomous operations, with automatic
monitoring and recovery - minimizing human intervention while maintaining

Mapping Trachoma in the Solomon Islands: Results of Three Baseline Population-Based Prevalence Surveys Conducted with the Global Trachoma Mapping Project.
PURPOSE: We sought to complete the baseline trachoma map of the Solomon Islands by establishing prevalences of active trachoma and trichiasis in the provinces of Choiseul, Western, Rennell-Bellona, and Temotu. METHODS: Using the standardized methodology developed for the Global Trachoma Mapping Project, we conducted cross-sectional community-based surveys from September to November 2013. Choiseul and Western provinces were each mapped as separate evaluation units (EUs); Rennell-Bellona and Temotu were combined to form a third EU. RESULTS: A total of 9819 individuals were sampled for inclusion, with 9224 (93.3%) consenting to examination, of whom 4587 (46.3%) were female. Survey teams visited 82 villages, and surveyed 2448 households. Two EUs had prevalences of trachomatous inflammation - follicular (TF) in 1-9-year-olds over the 10% threshold at which WHO recommends mass distribution of azithromycin for at least 3 years (Western 20.4%, 95% confidence interval, CI 15.6-26.3%; Rennell-Bellona/Temotu 22.0%, 95% CI 18.5-26.0%). Choiseul had a TF prevalence of 6.1% (95% CI 4.1-8.6%), and met the criterion for a single round of mass antibiotic distribution before re-survey. The adjusted prevalences of trichiasis in those aged 15+ years were 0.0% (95% CI 0.0-0.2%) in Choiseul, 0.16% (95% CI 0.0-0.5%) in Western, and 0.10% (95% CI 0-0.3%) in Rennell-Bellona/Temotu provinces. All three EUs require implementation of the facial cleanliness and environmental improvement components of the trachoma elimination strategy. CONCLUSION: Active trachoma is prevalent in the Solomon Islands. However, there is little evidence of the blinding complications of trachoma being a public health problem there. Further research into the explanation for this phenomenon is warranted
Phased Array Feed Calibration, Beamforming and Imaging
Phased array feeds (PAFs) for reflector antennas offer the potential for
increased reflector field of view and faster survey speeds. To address some of
the development challenges that remain for scientifically useful PAFs,
including calibration and beamforming algorithms, sensitivity optimization, and
demonstration of wide field of view imaging, we report experimental results
from a 19 element room temperature L-band PAF mounted on the Green Bank
20-Meter Telescope. Formed beams achieved an aperture efficiency of 69% and
system noise temperature of 66 K. Radio camera images of several sky regions
are presented. We investigate the noise performance and sensitivity of the
system as a function of elevation angle with statistically optimal beamforming
and demonstrate cancelation of radio frequency interference sources with
adaptive spatial filtering.Comment: 19 pages, 13 figure
The effect of energy input on the aggregation rate in an oscillating multi-grid reactor
Includes bibliographical references.Aggregation is a size enlargement mechanism which can be either desirable or inconvenient depending on the process involved. It involves the coming together or collision of two or more particles to form a larger single particle. It is a mechanism which is poorly understood and much research is still required before the intricacies of the process are fully grasped. Although it is known that aggregation is influenced by energy input (amongst other factors), the relationship between the two has previously been measured in anisotropic turbulent environments. Thus although aggregation is a function of local energy input, it has yet to be measured in environments where the local energy dissipation is well understood, or else it has been studied in low Reynolds number environments. This thesis aims to address this deficiency by studying the effect of local energy input on the aggregation rate in a well characterised environment of isotropic and homogenous turbulence

The XMM-LSS survey. Survey design and first results
We have designed a medium deep large area X-ray survey with XMM - the XMM
Large Scale Structure survey, XMM-LSS - with the scope of extending the
cosmological tests attempted using ROSAT cluster samples to two redshift bins
between 0<z<1 while maintaining the precision of earlier studies. Two main
goals have constrained the survey design: the evolutionary study of the
cluster-cluster correlation function and of the cluster number density. The
results are promising and, so far, in accordance with our predictions as to the
survey sensitivity and cluster number density. The feasibility of the programme
is demonstrated and further X-ray coverage is awaited in order to proceed with
