    The Impacts of Family Environment and Stress Reactivity on Daily Mood for Low-Income Latino Adolescents

    Low-income Latino adolescents are at an increased risk for developing psychopathology, as the chronic stressors faced by those who grow up in poverty have an adverse cumulative effect, and the relationship between exposure to poverty and negative mental health outcomes is intensified for ethnic minority youth. One of the most impactful ways in which poverty causes deteriorations in adolescent mental health is through heightened levels of parent-child conflict. Another harmful result of the multiple stressors faced by poor youth is the dysregulation of the stress reactivity system. For Latino adolescents, problems with mood are a particular concern, as Latino adolescents have higher rates of mood problems than any other ethnic group. Fortunately, these youth may be able to benefit from the buffering effect of the cultural value of familism. Higher levels of familism may buffer against the harmful effects of parent-child conflict and inflated stress reactivity on mood. The present study utilizes a daily diary methodology to examine these processes in a nuanced way for low-income Latino middle school students. This research examines whether greater dysregulation of the stress reactivity system exacerbates the impact of high parent-child conflict on mood problems, while greater levels of familism buffer against mood problems, using hierarchical linear models that incorporate all daily ratings for each adolescent. Finally, the effect of gender will be examined in each of these processes

    Natural frequencies and forced steady-state harmonic response for the vibration of uniform rectangular plates with edges elastically restrained against rotation and transverse translation are addressed. A single mode Rayleigh-Ritz solution is derived using functions that describe the normal modes of vibration of a beam whose ends are elastically restrained. The finite element solution is obtained for comparison. MACSYMA symbolic manipulation system is implemented as an aid to the mathematical rigor of the Ritz approach, and NASTRAN finite element code is used to model the mechanical system. Comparisons are made to published results and the solutions of this study are found to give lower frequencies for some values of boundary restraint. Steady-state harmonic amplitudes of displacement and acceleration are found to agree favorably for the two solutions. Low predictions of steady-state strain from NASTRAN result in some cases when compared to the Ritz values. Finally, a subjective assessment is made about the merit of using MACSYMA and NASTRAN

University of Missouri-Columbia 2008.I developed a series of spatially-nested research objectives to identify habitat elements related to the distribution and abundance of riverine smallmouth bass Micropterus dolomieu in Missouri. The range of smallmouth bass was identified using a few natural-occurring landscape variables: coarse-textured soils within the watershed, watershed relief, and soil permeability. Relative abundance could be predicted within this range using natural landscape and stream segment variables: soil permeability, channel gradient, stream size, spring-flow volume, and local slope. Densities of smallmouth bass in stream segments depended on interactions between land use and particularly important natural-occurring features (coarse-textured soils and soil permeability). Higher relative abundances based on natural features related to higher densities in pasture watersheds whereas urban watersheds generally had the lowest densities of fish regardless of natural conditions. Densities of young of year were higher in stream segments with high spring flows compared to low spring flows but not for other age classes. Young of year used warmer microhabitats than adults regardless of spring-flow influence. Velocity was the most significant variable identifying microhabitats used by young of year whereas depth was important in small streams and stream segments classified by pasture land use.Includes bibliographical reference

    Traffic and Navigation Support through an Automobile Heads Up Display (A-HUD)

    The automobile industry has produced many cars with new features over the past decade. Taking advantage of advances in technology, cars today have fuel-efficient hybrid engines, proximately sensors, windshield wipers that can detect rain, built-in multimedia entertainment, and all-wheel drive systems that adjust power in real-time. However, the interaction between the driver and the car has not changed significantly. The information being delivered – both in quantity and method – from the car to the driver has not seen the same improvements as there has been “under the hood.” This is a position paper that proposes immersing the driver inside an additional layer of traffic and navigation data, and presenting that data to the driver by embedding display systems into the automobile windows and mirrors. We have developed the initial concepts and ideas for this type of virtual display. Through gaze tracking the digital information is superimposed and registered with real world entities such as street signs and traffic intersections
