Topological Entanglement of Polymers and Chern-Simons Field Theory
In recent times some interesting field theoretical descriptions of the
statistical mechanics of entangling polymers have been proposed by various
authors. In these approaches, a single test polymer fluctuating in a background
of static polymers or in a lattice of obstacles is considered. The extension to
the case in which the configurations of two or more polymers become non-static
is not straightforward unless their trajectories are severely constrained. In
this paper we present another approach, based on Chern--Simons field theory,
which is able to describe the topological entanglements of two fluctuating
polymers in terms of gauge fields and second quantized replica fields.Comment: 16 pages, corrected some typos, added two new reference
Elasticity of entangled polymer loops: Olympic gels
In this note we present a scaling theory for the elasticity of olympic gels,
i.e., gels where the elasticity is a consequence of topology only. It is shown
that two deformation regimes exist. The first is the non affine deformation
regime where the free energy scales linear with the deformation. In the large
(affine) deformation regime the free energy is shown to scale as where is the deformation ratio. Thus a highly non

The prevalence and incidence of mental ill-health in adults with autism and intellectual disabilities
The prevalence, and incidence, of mental ill-health in adults with intellectual disabilities and autism were compared with the whole population with intellectual disabilities, and with controls, matched individually for age, gender, ability-level, and Down syndrome. Although the adults with autism had a higher point prevalence of problem behaviours compared with the whole adult population with intellectual disabilities, compared with individually matched controls there was no difference in prevalence, or incidence of either problem behaviours or other mental ill-health. Adults with autism who had problem behaviours were less likely to recover over a two-year period than were their matched controls. Apparent differences in rates of mental ill-health are accounted for by factors other than autism, including Down syndrome and ability level
AMM15: a new high-resolution NEMO configuration for operational simulation of the European north-west shelf
This paper describes the next-generation ocean forecast model for the European north-west shelf, which will become the basis of operational forecasts in 2018. This new system will provide a step change in resolution and therefore our ability to represent small-scale processes. The new model has a resolution of 1.5 km compared with a grid spacing of 7 km in the current operational system. AMM15 (Atlantic Margin Model, 1.5 km) is introduced as a new regional configuration of NEMO v3.6. Here we describe the technical details behind this configuration, with modifications appropriate for the new high-resolution domain. Results from a 30-year non-assimilative run using the AMM15 domain demonstrate the ability of this model to represent the mean state and variability of the region. Overall, there is an improvement in the representation of the mean state across the region, suggesting similar improvements may be seen in the future operational system. However, the reduction in seasonal bias is greater off-shelf than on-shelf. In the North Sea, biases are largely unchanged. Since there has been no change to the vertical resolution or parameterization schemes, performance improvements are not expected in regions where stratification is dominated by vertical processes rather than advection. This highlights the fact that increased horizontal resolution will not lead to domain-wide improvements. Further work is needed to target bias reduction across the north-west shelf region
Topological effects in ring polymers: A computer simulation study
Unconcatenated, unknotted polymer rings in the melt are subject to strong
interactions with neighboring chains due to the presence of topological
constraints. We study this by computer simulation using the bond-fluctuation
algorithm for chains with up to N=512 statistical segments at a volume fraction
\Phi=0.5 and show that rings in the melt are more compact than gaussian chains.
A careful finite size analysis of the average ring size R \propto N^{\nu}
yields an exponent \nu \approx 0.39 \pm 0.03 in agreement with a Flory-like
argument for the topologica interactions. We show (using the same algorithm)
that the dynamics of molten rings is similar to that of linear chains of the
same mass, confirming recent experimental findings. The diffusion constant
varies effectively as D_{N} \propto N^{-1.22(3) and is slightly higher than
that of corresponding linear chains. For the ring sizes considered (up to 256
statistical segments) we find only one characteristic time scale \tau_{ee}
\propto N^{2.0(2); this is shown by the collapse of several mean-square
displacements and correlation functions onto corresponding master curves.
Because of the shrunken state of the chain, this scaling is not compatible with
simple Rouse motion. It applies for all sizes of ring studied and no sign of a

Directed Polymers with Constrained Winding Angle
In this article we study from a non-perturbative point of view the
entanglement of two directed polymers subjected to repulsive interactions given
by a Dirac function potential. An exact formula of the so-called
second moment of the winding angle is derived. This result is used to provide a
thorough analysis of entanglement phenomena in the classical system of two
polymers subjected to repulsive interactions and related problems. No
approximation is made in treating the constraint on the winding angle and the
repulsive forces. In particular, we investigate how repulsive forces influence
the entanglement degree of the two-polymer system. In the limit of ideal
polymers, in which the interactions are switched off, we show that our results

Psychometric properties of the revised Developmental Behaviour Checklist scales in Dutch children with intellectual disability
The present study assessed the reliability and validity of the revised scales of the Developmental Behaviour Checklist (DBC) in a Dutch sample of children with intellectual disability (ID). The psychometric properties of the parent and teacher versions of the DBC were assessed in various subsamples derived from a sample of 1057 Dutch children (age range = 6-18 years) with ID or borderline intellectual functioning. Good test-retest reliability was shown both for the parent and teacher versions. Moderate inter-parent agreement and high one-year stability was found for the scale scores. Construct validity was satisfactory, although limited by high informant variance. The DBC scales showed good criterion-related validity, as indicated by significant mean differences between referred and non-referred children, and between children with and without a corresponding DSM-IV diagnosis. The reliability and validity of the revised DBC scales are satisfactory, and the checklist is recommended for clinical and research purposes
Autophagy inhibition-mediated epithelial–mesenchymal transition augments local myofibroblast differentiation in pulmonary fibrosis
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), the prototypic progressive fibrotic interstitial lung disease, is thought to be a consequence of repetitive micro-injuries to an ageing, susceptible alveolar epithelium. Ageing is a risk factor for IPF and incidence has been demonstrated to increase with age. Decreased (macro)autophagy with age has been reported extensively in a variety of systems and diseases, including IPF. However, it is undetermined whether the role of faulty autophagy is causal or coincidental in the context of IPF. Here, we report that in alveolar epithelial cells inhibition of autophagy promotes epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT), a process implicated in embryonic development, wound healing, cancer metastasis and fibrosis. We further demonstrate that this is attained, at least in part, by increased p62/SQSTM1 expression that promotes p65/RELA mediated-transactivation of an EMT transcription factor, Snail2 (SNAI2), which not only controls EMT but also regulates the production of locally acting profibrogenic mediators. Our data suggest that reduced autophagy induces EMT of alveolar epithelial cells and can contribute to fibrosis via aberrant epithelial–fibroblast crosstalk
On the connection of the generalized nonlinear sigma model with constrained stochastic dynamics
The dynamics of a freely jointed chain in the continuous limit is described
by a field theory which closely resembles the nonlinear sigma model. The
generating functional of this field theory contains nonholonomic
constraints, which are imposed by inserting in the path integral expressing
a suitable product of delta functions. The same procedure is commonly
applied in statistical mechanics in order to enforce topological conditions on
a system of linked polymers. The disadvantage of this method is that the
contact with the stochastic process governing the diffusion of the chain is
apparently lost. The main goal of this work is to reestablish this contact. To
this purpose, it is shown here that the generating functional
coincides with the generating functional of the correlation functions of the
solutions of a constrained Langevin equation. In the discrete case, this
Langevin equation describes as expected the Brownian motion of beads connected
