El consejo de administración y la reputación corporativa: un análisis empírico

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to test the association between board of director characteristics and corporate reputation. Design/methodology/approach – Logistic and multivariate regressions are performed to analyse whether the board of director characteristics are associated with the level of corporate reputation. The sample is composed of listed companies in the Madrid Stock Exchange (Índice General de la Bolsa de Madrid)atleastonceduringtheperiod2004-2010.Corporategovernancedataweremanuallyextracted from governance reports released by Spanish companies. The data for the design of a corporate reputation measure were obtained from the Monitor Español de Reputación Corporativa (MERCO) institute web site. Findings – Results from the empirical analysis show that Spanish companies that appear high up in terms of ranking in the reputation index provided by MERCO tend to have a higher percentage of independent directors as well as more female directors on their board. Firm size and the image of the president of a firm are also linked to corporate reputation. Originality/value – The results have direct implications for the management of corporate governance mechanisms by shareholders who should take into account their role in the creation and maintenance of corporate reputation.Objetivo El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar la asociación entre las características de los consejos de administración y la reputación corporativa. Metodología La metodología empleada se basa en el uso de regresiones logísticas y multivariantes. Nuestra muestra se compone de las empresas que cotizaron en el Índice General de la Bolsa de Madrid (IGBM) durante el período 2004-2010. Los datos sobre gobierno corporativo se obtuvieron manualmente a partir de los informes de gobierno corporativo publicados por las empresas españolas. La información para diseñar la medida de la reputación corporativa se obtuvo de la página web de MERCO (Monitor Español de Reputación Corporativa). Resultados Los resultados del análisis empírico muestran que las empresas españolas que aparecen en las posiciones más altas del ranking de reputación corporativa proporcionado por MERCO tienden a tener un mayor porcentaje de directores independientes y de mujeres en sus consejos de administración. El tamaño de la empresa y la reputación del presidente también están relacionados con la reputación corporativa. Originalidad Los resultados tienen implicaciones directas para la gestión de los mecanismos de gobierno corporativo por parte de los accionistas, que deberían considerar el papel de los consejos de administración en la creación y mantenimiento de la reputación corporativa

Can mHealth Improve Risk Assessment in Underserved Populations? Acceptability of a Breast Health Questionnaire App in Ethnically Diverse, Older, Low-Income Women.

Background: Use of mobile health (mHealth) tools has expanded rapidly but little research has been done on its acceptability by low-income, diverse, older patient populations. Objective: To assess the attitudes of a diverse group of underserved women on the acceptability and usability of mHealth tools in a clinical setting using a breast health questionnaire application (app) at a public hospital mammography clinic. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted in a breast-imaging center of an urban safety net institution from July-August 2012. Interviews included pre- and post-questions. Women completed the Athena breast health questionnaire app on an iPad and were asked about their experience and ways to improve the tool. Results: Fifteen women age 45-75 years from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds were interviewed. The majority of women, 11 of 15, preferred the Athena app over a paper version and all the women thought the app was easy to use. Two Spanish-speaking Latinas preferred paper; and two women, with limited mobile phone use, did not have a preference. Many women indicated that it would be necessary to have staff available for instruction and assistance if the app were to be implemented. Conclusions: mHealth tools are an acceptable, if not preferred, method of collecting health information for diverse, older, low-income women. Further studies are required to evaluate the reliability and accuracy of data collection using mHealth tools in underserved populations. mHealth tools should be explored as a novel way to engage diverse populations to improve clinical care and bridge gaps in health disparities

El proyecto tipográfico del irlandés Albert O’Farail se concibió como un libro misionero destinado a la empresa confesional que la monarquía de España desarrollaba en las Islas Británicas desde comienzos del Seiscientos. Las traducciones de distintos tratados doctrinales y teológicos, representados por su devoción particular a la Virgen María, procuraban acercar la religión a los católicos del Norte a través de mecanismos de proximidad cultural como complemento a la predicación de los ministros espirituales patrocinados por Carlos II. El empeño por dar a las prensas esta miscelánea de obras, financiada por la corona y compuesta por el arte de su propio autor, discurrió en paralelo a la querella abierta por su esposa, María Manuela Laínez, para reivindicar sus derechos nobiliarios al título marquesal de Mayo. Tanto en Madrid como en Roma, la imbricación de ambos negociados determinó su malograda resolución.The project of the Irishman Albert O’Farail was conceived as a missionary book. It would be destined to the confessional empress that the Spanish monarchy developed in the British Isles for the beginning of 17th century. The translations of different doctrinal and theological treaties were represented by his particular devotion to the Virgin Marie. All of them tried to approach the religion to the Catholics of the North through mechanism of cultural familiarity as complements of the predication of the spiritual ministers sponsored by Carlos II. The effort for giving this miscellany of works to the presses was financed by the crown and composed by the author himself. It ran in parallel with the dispute of his wife, María Manuela Laínez, for reclaiming her rights over the title of marquis of Mayo. Both in Madrid as well as in Rome, the imbrications of both matters determined their unsuccessful resolution

Casas de acogida: desde la experiencia a la reflexión

The goal of the present article is to present our two year experience in a Shelter Home for women who suffer domestic violence as well as their children. During this period of time, what we have witnessed and experienced has little in common with what has been written in the handbooks about violence or, at least, some of our experience does not appear in those handbooks. This is exactly what we want to tell in this article with the intention of taking the occasion to understand, discuss and think about our task.El objetivo del presente artículo es transmitir nuestra experiencia de dos años en una Casa de Acogida para mujeres víctimas de violencia doméstica y sus hijos e hijas. En este tiempo hemos observado y experimentado situaciones que no siempre coinciden con lo escrito sobre la violencia, o al menos, una parte de nuestra experiencia no está reflejada en dicha literatura. Es esta parte la que pretendemos transmitir en este artículo con el objetivo de que las profesionales que trabajamos y tenemos contacto con esta problemática abramos un espacio de conocimiento, debate y reflexión sobre nuestra labor
